〈 SCHIZOID DEFINITION 〉

what is szpd? — schizoid personality disorder is a disorder in cluster-a and has the following criteria cited by the DSM-5:

A. — A pervasive pattern of detachment from social relationships and a restricted range of expression of emotions in interpretal settings, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by four (or more) of the following:

Neither desires nor enjoys close relationships, including being part of a family.

Almost always chooses solidary activities.

Has little, if any, interest in having sexual experiences with another person.

Takes pleasure in few, if any, activities.

Lacks close friends or confidents other than first-degree relatives.

Appears indifferent to the praise or criticism of others.

Shows emotional coldness, detachment, or flattened affectivity.

B. — Does not occur exclusively during the course of schizophrenia, a bipolar disorder or depressive disorder with psychotic features, another psychotic disorder, or autism spectrum disorder and is not attributable to the physiological effects of another medical condition.

[ In the British psychoanalytic object relations discourse the external and internal object worlds continue to coexist throughout development. The distortions and dissimilarities of the internal world will be greater given the severity of psychopathology, but even in the best of circumstances, these worlds never become completely identical (Fairbairn 1951, Klein 1946). The idea of a void dividing the inner and outer worlds is in accord with contemporary postmodernist philosophy. Derrida (1984) speaks of the void that must inevitably remain between the signifier and signified, and Eco (1984) describes the gap of nothingness that must divide the mental representation from the thing itself that is represented. I suggest that it is the empty core, initially experienced as the lack of instinctual need, that becomes the uncrossable divide between the external and internal object worlds. ]

likely yes, but have you read/are planning to read r.d. laing's the divided self? a lot of its quotes, especially of the early chapters, still sit heavy on my mind since i read it four years ago. it's nothing new (it quite literally is the foundation for so much of what seinfeld and guntrip talk about) but the way it words certain things is just. striking.

"The Empty Core" by Jeffery Seinfeld. direct quote.

[ Half a century ago, Fairbairn (1940) presented his work on the schizoid personality. Most of what is known about the schizoid phenomena can be found in this classic essay and the four that followed. These papers introduced a complete object relations theory of the personality (Fairbairn 1941, 1943, 1944, 1946).

The schizoid patient has withdrawn from disappointing external object relations into the imaginary internal world of bad objects described as exciting (but nongratifying), enticing, bewitching, addicting, rejecting, persecuting, and punishing. There is a constant interplay between the introjection of external objects and the projection of internal objects. Depressive and borderline states result from the fear of object loss based on the hating, destructive wishes toward the object. Schizoid anxiety is centered on the fear that one's love destroys the object (Fairbairn 1940).

Ogden (1989) states, "Since we are dealing with the earliest human relationship, that of mother and infant, the notion of the infant's love should be understood as virtually synonymous with the infant's way of being with and needing the mother" (p.87). ]

[ The schizoid person presents as superficial, concrete, overly related to facticity and reality (Giovacchini 1986). Despite the constriction and repression of phantasy life, he may on occasion reveal strange and fantastic dream fragments or fleeting segments of phantasy suggesting a rich and complex inner world. (British object relations analysts have been inclined to use phantasy in referring to unconscious phantasy and fantasy to refer to the conscious level of such psychic activity). The affect is constricted. The schizoid withdraws from the external world in favor of a preoccupation with internal life. The false self protects the true self from posing its subjectivity and vitality (Eigen 1986). The schizoid may also develop a variant of the false-self system, an as-if personality. The individual relates to the object world on the basis of childlike imitation, expressing a superficial identification with the environment but with a lack of genuine warmth (Meissner 1988). The as-if structure serves to defend against the underlying schizoid emptiness and sense of futility. The values and convictions of the as-if personality tend toward identification with whatever individual or group finds at the time. ]

[ The term schizoid refers to the splitting of the self. The schizoid individual complains of feeling isolated, disengaged, shut-out, unconnected, and apathetic. There is a consuming need for object dependence but attachment threatens the schizoid with the loss of self. The individual protects an insecure sense of self by emotional withdrawal and affective isolation. Unable to make emotionally meaningful commitments, the person often feels that life is futile and without purpose (Meissner 1988). Existential phenomenology describes the schizoid sense of identity as suffering ontological insecurity (Laing 1959). The schizoid frequently has few friends, is not involved with community or society in general, and may appear shy or eccentric. There may be paranoid features: sensitivity, guardedness, and suspiciousness (Meissner 1988).

The schizoid may also seem to be sociable and involved in relationships. However, he is frequently playing a role and not fully involved, unconsciously disowning this role (Fairbairn 1940). Winnicott (1960) described the false-self system. ]
