Ok so I’ve been playing for 18 years and i’m a string teacher. Can i just say how IMPORTANT it is for young kids to see a BLACK, MALE-PRESENTING PERSON playing, nae, SHREDDING on a violin? I’ve know maybe 5 black people who played stringed instruments throughout my schooling and teaching (predumably because i’m an upper middle class white woman). In districts where the population is predominantly black, funding is always low, so the instruments are crappy. Kids quit, or the program is dismantled. I’ve seen very few professional string players who are black.

Obviously there are black string players. We just don’t see them because they “don’t look like” string players.

This person is the real deal. They were clearly classically trained, and seems to have some fiddle training as well. How cool is that?

i really love this roman mosaic depicting some racehorses not just because these are some Very Spunky Boys but also because it gives us some roman racehorse names! these fellows are named pupillus (”orphan,” which…okay), amator (”lover-boy”), cupido (”cupid”), and aura (”breeze”)

@almareda those are some really good questions!

first off, here’s a link to a larger version of the image since the original link i included didn’t work. if you look closely, you’ll see that a lot of details on amator are actually painted on- possibly restorations of what the mosaic might have looked like? it’s hard to say without actually knowing the background of the mosaic (which sadly i have not found). the missing chunks of the mosaic are probably the result of damage over time, and the people who’ve worked on those mosaics just don’t have enough information to fill in the blanks on the missing tunics

as for the focus on the name of the horse- these are chariot horses! if you look at their tunics of the people leading the horse, we see red and white on the bottom too, and the juuuust a little trace of blue and green on the top. so, they represent the chariot teams! these are probably the charioteers based on the whips that they’re holding (there aren’t any amphorae around, so they’re not sparsores). these horses are likely the leading horse of each chariot team- it’s pretty common to see mosaics with the leading horse named.

charioteers are sometimes, but not always, named with their horses. i’ve seen mosaics where the charioteer and the lead horse are named, where neither are named…and then there’s another one of my favorites- a beautiful chariot-racing mosaic from barcino where all of the horses on each team are named, but none of the charioteers are!

Excluding bonuses, DoorDash decides how much a delivery is worth based on distance. Let’s say DD has decided a delivery is worth $8.

If you tip $2 in the app, the driver gets $6 from DD and $2 from you. So they still get $8 total. 

If you tip $10 in the app, the driver gets $10 from you and nothing from DD. Congrats. You played yourself. You just saved DD $8 and the driver barely got a tip, even though you were generous!!

If you tip $10 CASH, the driver gets $8 from DoorDash in the app and $10 CASH from you, so they get $18 total. 

If you don’t have cash on hand, ask the driver for their CashApp or Venmo when they get to your door. 

Putting money directly into the hands of delivery people is how you ensure tips aren’t being skimmed. Other platforms have similar pay models. And, if you think I’m making this up, google the multiple class-action lawsuits against instacart for stealing tips.
