I was just checking in on the status of the Quileute tribe's Move to Higher Ground (MTHG) project!
Phase 1, the construction of a new school outside of the tsunami zone, has been completed.
"Our priority was the relocation of the Quileute Tribal School (QTS). Formerly located on a deserted US Coast Guard site, QTS was a few feet above sea level at the Quillayute River estuary, within the Pacific Ocean tsunami inundation zone. On August 5, 2022, the Quileute Tribe celebrated the completion of its newly constructed school on the designated MTHG relocation zone, beyond the threat from tsunamis. The new facility includes a full-size gymnasium with high school regulation sized basketball and volleyball courts, computer and technical skills labs, science laboratories with lockable chemical preparation rooms, a fully equipped woodshop, state of the art technology to enhance student learning, and an upper school lounge where the older students can gather to collaborate, study, or relax during free time. With Phase 1 completed, the Tribe is now working to establish the next phase of the project."
Following Phase 1, the project leads completed a survey to identify priorities for continued housing development needs and is in a planning phase for the next stage of the project.
If you'd like to join me in contributing to help with the next steps of the project (or just learn more), you can do so at https://mthg.org/
at a tribal finance conference listening to a quileute tribal council member talk about how companies have bought every house in forks, wa because it’s a tourist destination so they can’t hire people to work for the tribe
anyway fuck stephenie meyer for profiting so intensely off of racist stereotypes of quilteutes and all native people while never contributing a dime to help them solve the problems she caused!
if you have the ability, you can donate to their move to higher ground fund here: https://mthg.org
important context, thank you @fiercestpurpose
did not expect my rage post to reach this level so to add to my nearly incoherent screed, sustainable housing was mentioned as the most immediate issue now that the school has been moved. if you ask any tribal elder, council member, or leader, they will say that one of the most important growth factors for tribes is the ability to send their kids out for education and experience, and for those members to come back to help their people when they can. quileute tribal members actively want to move back to la push, but nearly all housing is either exorbitantly priced or is owned and operated as airb&bs/tourism rentals. by fundraising for and building their own housing developments, they can build in long-term capital as well as bring in talented, educated tribal members to help their people.
[ID: the first image depicts spongebob sitting, apparently calmly, in a desk chair while a translucent spongebob placed over the image screams.
the second image is a screenshot of tags which read: "#i was like 'i thought they met their goal years ago' and they did! #they successfully relocated the school which was their top priority #however they are hoping to relocate several other services as well #which is what they are currently fundraising for #you can find more information at the link." end ID.]
you’re impossibly fast. and strong. your fur is pale white and ice cold
I kinda like the idea of Edward falling in love with Bella real fast, but Bella taking a couple months to develop feelings for him, they fell in love so fast, I wanted to see more of him yearning and pining and trying to make her like him too
Oh hell yeah
Don’t get me wrong there’s a je ne sais quoi to the canon pacing but think of all the additional angsting Edward would’ve had time for if Bella wasn’t constantly blindsiding him with “it’s mutual, idiot”
I also have a hard time seeing Bella not being at least a little crazy about him, ngl. S o this is an au where Edward and Bella are slightly better at reeling in their inner freaks (sad). They are both so insecure that it really isn’t that hard to imagine.
As far as Edward can tell, he seems to be growing on her slowly, he’s all too aware of how little time he has with her because of her short human lifespan, so it feels even slower to him, but he’s determined to savor every scrap of her attention he can get, and NEVER pressure her.
Edward is determined to not make the first ~move~ because he refuses to drag her down. She sets every boundary, from discussion topics to physical contact. He follows her lead.
Bella ofc misinterprets this as him not being interested Like That, and does a lot of mental gymnastics to convince herself that she just has a crush on the most beautiful boy at her new school. Just because he’s paying attention to me doesn’t mean he likes me, and that’s fine., she thinks, convincing no one. She’s friendzoning herself, insisting they’re friends and she happens to be attracted to him.
It’s ofc brought to her attention that she’s the first person to get his attention but she chocks it up to her being the first person to not be weird about his family’s own weirdness. She’s no small-town girl; she’s seen weirder drama in Phoenix than foster siblings dating.
So she flexes the ole “I’ve always been good at suppressing unpleasant things” such as apparently unrequited attraction, and they’re fast friends. She invites him to sit at her lunch table with Angela, Ben, Mike, etc.
For a while, their relationship not unlike canon Twilight in a lot of ways. That’s what I like about this pairing (at least in the books)— they’re best friends that are also in love. They talk about their favorite things, bemoan the male population of Forks High’s forwardness in asking her out (Edward nearly cracks his own teeth, he clenches them so hard to keep from fishing for any indication if she’d be open to him asking her out), Bella finds out her BFF is a vampire.
Yeah. I think she’d find out anyway. Bella’s still a danger magnet, Edward’s still going to protect her, she’s still going to notice the ~clues~. That doesn’t change just because they ain’t lockin’ lips. When she finds out about the barely-controllable bloodlust it further cements that Edward wouldn’t want her like that; surely he could never be with a human like that. She even cracks a strained joke about how that must put a damper on his love life. “It does make things… complicated.” he says, and she could swear he’s looking at her lips, but no— he’s definitely looking at her neck. Duh. Blood. Vampire.
She cuts the tension by putting a tentative hand on his shoulder— their first physical contact— and saying “well, this puts ‘best friends forever’ into perspective, huh?” and immediately kicks herself for how dorky it was. She thinks Edward’s chagrin is at the cheesy line, but it’s at the reminder that only he is forever. They’re just friends; they’ll graduate high school, maybe they’ll keep in contact after she goes off to college for a little before texts become few and far between, then stop altogether.
Bella’s still invited to baseball. She’s in the know, so why not? The nomads still show, Edward’s reaction triggers James’s tracking shtick, they run, they plan. Instead of ‘breaking up with Edward’ being the excuse for Charlie, Bella panics and says “I told Edward I like him, and he doesn’t feel the same. I need to get away, just for a few days.” This nearly kills him as he eavesdrops. Bella gets to her room and sees him frozen where he was pulling her duffel bag out from under her bed— which, how did he know that was there? (He’d never confessed to all the breaking-and-entering in this au). Bella says “c’mon, we have to go!”, snaps him out of it. They pack and drive to the Cullens.
Internally Edward is in hysterics. Bella even bringing up the possibility of being interested in him like that has broken him. Was that just a cover story? Was it based on a kernel of truth?
He’s staring at her as they drive, and she squirms. Is he mad? Is even the imaginary scenario of her liking him so repulsive that the cover story ruined their friendship? Great. She’s still convinced that she just has a crush on him, but that’s still a blow to the ego.
Car ride, airport, it's all mostly the same. Bella gets knocked around, bitten, the Cullens show up just in time. Edward sucks James's venom out; she won't become a vampire, but she's lost a lot of blood. Carlisle looks grim. She could still be dying.
His mouth still covered in her blood, he kisses her.
Deep and desperate, it's not really that pleasant, honestly. But it's Edward and even without all the trauma, drugs, and blood loss, Bella's sure she would've passed out from that kiss alone. She barely has the wherewithal and energy to reciprocate before it's over. But she tries, dammit.
She wakes up in the hospital.
She asks him how much of that was real. “You were really bitten by a— by two vampires, including myself. You almost died. James died instead.” He says.
“That’s not what I meant.” She crosses her arms— awkwardly, with the tubes attached to her wrists, but she manages.
Edward’s stupid when it comes to Bella, but he’s not that stupid, and he won’t play stupid. “I’m sorry. That was wrong of me to do. I just couldn’t— I wasn’t thinking, and I didn’t know if you’d even live, and it was my last chance. You don’t need to worry, it will never happen again, and you can forget it ever happened. In fact, if you never want to see me again, just say the word, and— what are you doing?”
“I’m trying to untangle myself from these sheets so I can shut you up. With my lips.”
He goes to her. They kiss. It’s awkward, clunky, the air is stale in the hospital room and there’s this annoying beeping that picks up as her heart rate spikes. It’s over quickly. They’re both breathless anyway. They’re smiling like idiots when Renée walks in.
The cover story for Edward and Carlisle being in Phoenix is that Edward was down there to tell Bella it was a misunderstanding; he doesn't "like her back", he has actually been desperately in love with her for months.
Any good lie has to be based on the truth, after all.
twilight girlies
when bella didn't want to get married at 18 because she saw how her parents' marriage crumbled and she was opposed to the patriarchal nature of the whole institution, and is bitter about it until the moment she is walking down the aisle, but as soon as she's married she realizes that being mrs. cullen is actually the best thing to ever happen to her and she's immediately ecstatic to have a baby with her husband. the way jacob says "you don't even belong to yourself anymore" about imprinting and is repulsed by the very idea, but then when he imprints he realizes it's actually what he was born to do & nothing could make him happier & he leaves everything behind to live with his mate's family. man once you become aware of the mormon agenda present within the twilight saga it is ALL you're aware of lol
hi heres the entire twilight movie as a stamp
bella: where are your fangs?
do u like jasper
Not particularly, nothing about him ever appealed to me, from his description in the books, to his special power, and in fact i was actively turned off by his history in the confederacy. But thats more of a Smeyer thing than any sort of real reflection on his character. Also i’m just so turned off by war so his vamp backstory also doesn’t appeal to me. Love Alice and if smeyer werent a mormon she would be a lesbian
AU where Edward does return in New Moon but doesn’t reveal himself to Bella
By the time he gets to Bella, she’s not back to normal of course but she’s not catatonic anymore. She’s not thriving, but she’s living. Edward, on the other hand, is pretty well and truly Cracked and delusional by this point and convinces himself that it’s enough to just be around her. He can keep watch over her without being in her life. Keep her safe from outside forces and himself. That’s enough for him.
Except he’s not quite cognizant enough to actually stay completely hidden. Bella catches glimpses of him and assumes they’re more hallucinations at first, so she keeps going about her life. That is, until she sees more than a flash in the corner of her eye— he looks horrible. Still beautiful, but rough. Not like her usual hallucinations. Eyes dead, cheeks gaunt, all shadows and bruises and decay
Of course her first inclination is to believe her hallucinations are changing. That’s just more likely than Edward actually coming back. She tries not to think too hard about what the change means— is her memory of him waning? Is her mental picture of him deteriorating in tandem with her own mental state despite her thinking she’s getting better? Is she going to crash and burn again? And why does she feel a tug in her chest in its direction? How do her eyes know exactly which direction to look to see him? That never even happened before the real Edward left
Edward thinks he’s looking out for her. Keeping vigil. He can’t see that he’s haunting her.
you're telling me that Bella "Simulates Killing Herself To Feel Something" Swan doesn't adopt a substance abuse problem after Edward leaves??? You're telling me Bella "Take My Soul, I Don't Want It Without You" Swan isn't a crossfaded mess when Alice comes to find her? That her hands don't shake from a comedown on the plane to Volterra, that she doesn't throw up in the stolen car ride through italy, that she's not absolutely sick as a DOG staring down the vampire government? That Edward's heart doesn't completely shatter realizing that her room smells like stale beer and weed smoke as he carries her up to her bed, that he never finds a stash of Charlie's muscle relaxers in her dresser drawer and absolutely freaks out? That the entirety of Eclipse shouldn't be about Bella struggling to kick her habit and struggling not to replace her addiction to substances with her addiction to Edward and struggling against his really puritanical ideas about Resisting Urges and having Self Control?
Pah.
'These are our cousins from alaska'
Bella’s dream🩸
Favorite cover story/excuse/weird detail
Our adopted parents take us out of school to go hiking on sunny days
Authorities decided that a teen who lives with his parents should get this baby
Rose & Jazz are Esme's niece & nephew. So, dating their adopted cousins
It's the fluorescents
As long as we don't use the word 'vampire' w/ Charlie, the Volturi will be cool
Cullens look like THAT cuz Dr. C does plastic surgery on them + himself
It was an adrenaline rush. It's very common. You can google it.
Rose and Edward going to med school helps Carlisle stay current
Cullens disappeared overnight cuz Carlisle took a new job in L.A.
They came back because Esme didn't like life in L.A.
Esme + Carlisle on a hunting trip when end of NM nonsense went down
Tell me about the great one I forgot to mention!
For those confused about the baby one: this is the cover story they are apparently using to explain Renesmee. That she was the daughter of Edward's older biological brother who died in a car accident along with his wife and the authorities tracked down Edward.
Stephenie Meyer's sci-fi novel The Host is like. it's almost so much. the alien bodysnatchers at the center of the plot are like Animorph's yeerks if they got really into cottagecore. no, they don't want intergalactic war and domination! they want intergalactic peace and domination! they make every planet they visit a peaceful socialist utopia and like, okay, yes, they have to violently take over the bodies of a planet's native inhabitants to do it. yes, they have to suppress the unwilling minds of their host bodies. yes they are for all intents and purposes committing a genocide of their chosen planets' initial inhabitants and then puppeting their husks around playing at homogeneous, sanitized versions of the cultures they destroyed. the alien main character mentions that even episodes of the Brady Bunch were scrubbed because they were deemed too violent. and they call themselves souls, which is so loaded on so many levels. impossible not to read into the spiritual connotations, especially when written by an author coming from the mormon church which so highly values mission trips. just by sympathizing with humans who don't want to be possessed, by helping them hide out and stay free, our protagonist becomes a pariah, an outlaw from her own society. peace is valued above all else but not peace for the colonized, who are meat to be processed. it's better this way. they had so much potential but squandered it with foolish violence so now we have the right to overtake them and make them live correctly. isn't it beautiful now? isn't everything perfect? there's like almost so much happening in this story except Stephenie's a fucking mormon so she never draws any meaningful connections to anything and the happy ending is that the alien brain parasite protag is gifted the body of a beautiful coma patient that she can "ethically" puppet around, easy peasy problem solved. also there's a fucking love triangle.
