You know, I normally just block people like @megashadowdragon and move on with my life because it’s generally not worth it. But this brain fart was so egregious that I had to respond!
For those of you who don’t know, in the Empire over time the power had shifted from the throne and into the hands of the seven elite families. Ionius’s reforms were designed to centralise power back into his hands.
There are some surface-level similarities to Lambert’s reforms in that Lambert too was trying to set up a King’s private army with a mix of commoners and nobles who were all going to be professional soldiers. A standing army would inevitably lead to the reduction of the power of the feudal lords as would the peace with Duscar and eventually Sreng that Lambert wanted. Because within the Kingdom, the reliance on crests and relics is due to necessity. The local lords need to protect their own lands, and those on the borders need more power (read: higher taxes on the peasants) than those towards the centre of Fodlan.
This is, however, where the similarities end. While Lambert was killed trying to broker peace with Duscar, Ionius MURDERED EVERY MEMBER OF HOUSE HYMN, including women, child and I imagine babies!
In what universe is a man who was trying to make peace with his neighbours the same as a man who MURDERED EVERY MEMBER OF A FAMILY?
The Insurrection of the Seven was provoked by Emperor Ionius IX’s policy of power centralization. In opposition to Ionius IX, House Hrym tried to secede from the Empire and join the Leicester Alliance in 1167. Working with the neighboring House Ordelia, Hrym raised an insurrection, but the Empire swiftly suppressed it. In retaliation for the uprising, the house’s main genetic line was eradicated, and a puppet leader (Jeritza who used Hymn commoners as prey to feed the Death Knight’s bloodlust) was then installed as the face of House Hrym while House Aegir was tasked with handling the actual governance of the territory.
In light of this brutal subjugation, other nobles feared that the Emperor would seek to assume total control of the Empire and move against them next. The six great noble families of Adrestia agreed to cooperate to rein in Ionius IX. Led by Duke Ludwig von Aegir, the nobles stripped the monarch of much of his power in 1171, relegating him to a mere figurehead while the Duke became the true authority behind the throne. With the Emperor out of the way, the nobles started to abuse their positions to further enrich themselves, much to the Empire’s detriment.
The Insurrection also inflicted lingering hardships on the Hrym territory, as Duke Aegir subsequently imposed harsh taxes upon the local people. They fled their homes in droves to the neighbouring Ordelia territory, only to be sent back from where they came.
So no, Ionius is not the same as Lambert. Ionius as himself, uncorrupted by TWSITD as far as we know, ordered the eradication of House Hymn bloodline. Which is a very legitimate reason for why other loyal ministers (including those who remained loyal to Edelgard in both Houses and Hopes) turned against him. Thales, as far as we can tell, didn’t take over until well after the six had already turned against their Emperor for fear that they and their families will be the next to be butchered.
Lambert by contrast, wanted to sign a peace treaty with brown people. Brown people who the Western Lords saw as less then them. He wanted to promote commoners into the army. Commoners who the Western Lords saw as tarnishing their knighthood. The Western Lords saw Lamberts reforms as an attack on their rights and privileges, which they in turn thought was unjust. Maybe they feared Lambert would do to them what Ionius did to House Hymn but the point is, Lambert hadn’t done anything except want peace.
So no OP, no one hates Ionius because he’s Edelgard’s dad. They hate him because he actions showed him to be a tyrannical despot!
