there’s something about detuned & broken instruments, distorted sounds & mistakes. they can take what’s familiar & create something new out of breaking our familiarity, out of decay
here’s a recording of the first movement of beethoven’s moonlight sonata being played in someone’s basement on a detuned piano. it’s spontaneous. it’s unrehearsed. it’s very real & human & unique & i don’t think i’ve ever heard a recording of it i’ve enjoyed more than this
