i dont understand people who think the government should be banning kids from social media. i had a conversation recently and it was cut short before i could make all my points. rather than letting them sit in my head i will put them here on tumblr.
1) its a restriction of freedom of speech which children are also entitled to
2) for many kids social media is a lifeline to a world outside their home or a link with friends or access to information. kids who are being abused, kids who are closeted in red areas, kids who live in isolated rural areas, etc social media can be a huge and important outlet for these kids. it can show them the diverse world outside their homes.
3) social media isnt the only thing that radicalizes kids. they will get radicalized without social media too. they got radicalized before social media and they will get radicalized after it. stop using this to justify your moral panic about social media.
4) kids will find a way around government bans. they are smarter than lawmakers and parents give them credit for.
5) identity verification is a massive privacy violation. ah yes let me give you this minor's government id so their life can be ruined in a data breach and their identity stolen.
6) if you dont want YOUR kids to use social media that is up to YOU as a parent. stop expecting the government to parent your children. stop expecting schools to parent your children. AND when you notice them going down concerning pipelines- maybe talk to them??? be a parent???
those are the points i didnt get to say but thought of later. banning kids from social media is not a solution. it is censorship.
