I'm rereading hdwr because of course I am and I'm having extremely distressed aromantic thoughts about usshi's whole character and especially this panel just actually killed me

and yeah there are many ways to interpret this scene, in a sapphic way, in a trans/gender non conforming way (based on what usshi says to miwa later in the chapter), but I don't know. this is exactly what being aromantic and seeing other people casually hitting it off feels like for me. that rift. the rationalisation of romance, the oh I guess I could date this person if I tried, only to witness how naturally it comes to other people, how they don't even have to think about it. and when they are your friends it's even more of a betrayal, it's this deeply rooted alienation of being wired completely differently from everyone else, it's seeing love as that overwhelming force that everyone claims is not a choice so then you're never chosen. "I'm miserable why am I this miserable?" it's like you're lacking something pivotal to the human experience and it's so lonely on the other side.
