When it comes to chronic illnesses, mental illnesses, and disabilities, I've noticed that a lot of able-bodied people either don't take names seriously, or don't understand and ask you to explain what it is to them.

Now, if you have any kind of disability, you know it's fucking annoying go have people make you explain something over and over again, or have people go "oh, you have X? You mean, like the [awful stereotype] thing?"

So, I have realized recently that being Vague As Shit is great for making people leave you the hell alone.

I have autism and anxiety, and with that comes the symptom of selective mutism. If you don't know what that is, Firefox is free. But I had an episode where I couldn't speak today in one of my classes, and knew I would have to explain it to my partner and probably my professor.

This usually goes with me writing that I can't speak, them asking why, me saying selective mutism, and them asking me what that is. Then I have to painstakingly write out an explanation. And, obviously, I'm tired of this. So I tried something new. When he asked, I simply told him I couldn't speak, and when he asked if I physically couldn't or just didn't want to, I just opened my mouth and unleashed the terrifying, awful, broken stuttering that comes out when I try to speak while mute.

His response was "OKAY OKAY OKAY YOU CAN STOP NOW" and he did not question me for the rest of class, and even explained to the professor what was wrong when she tried to make me popcorn read.

This also works on doctors. When I tell doctors I have PCOS, POTS, or hEDS, they usually hear "oh the crazy women self diagnosis disabilities" and treat me accordingly. So, instead I drop unhinged symptoms until they leave me alone.

"Yes, my last menstrual cycle started on December 12th, 2025 and ended January 28th, 2026." "I have experienced several events where I have passed out randomly, yes." "My hip has subluxated six times in the past week."

It's like in the principles of writing horror. If you name and describe the problem, it's easier for people to minimize and ignore. Don't let them. You live with this fucking bullshit every day. Let your symptoms haunt people. They don't need to know everything about you. Besides, it makes them treat you better than when you give them names.

Genuine question - Where do you get your update concepts? Where do you keep getting these ideas about "what tumblr users want" with regard to the use and functionality of this website?

Because for true and for serious, whoever is giving you these ideas, they have no idea what they're talking about.

If you're using a focus group, get a new one. If you're using a consultant, fire them. If you're looking at other social media sites and using that as a template, STOP.

The entire charm of tumblr is that it is NOT like other websites. We like it the way it is. We've built a home and a culture and a community that's lasted for over 20 years now, which is more than most other text-based social media sites from the 2010s can say.

If you want ideas on how to improve the site, ASK ACTUAL TUMBLR USERS. They'll tell you things like :

improve the search function

improve the tag system

improve user support and problem reporting

improve account filters to weed out pornbots and spam accounts

do something about the repetitive dashboard ads so that blocking them actually works

use human-intelligence review to prevent hate-reporting against marginalized users and needless deletion of their accounts

do better with removing hate groups and hate content from the site

Or, if you want something else to do, fix the mobile app. Half the time, it doesn't work at all.

It's weird here. It's unconventional. It's nerdy and niche and hard to pin down. And that's kind of the point.

@staff I understand as a website we're very resistant to change, and that can make site maintenance frustrating when it feels like nothing will ever be received well. But to illustrate the difference between small matters of preference and changes that defeat the purpose of the site, here are a few random ideas that I think would actually make any fucking sense for a tumblr update:

group chats

better separation for sideblogs, i.e. liking from a sideblog and most importantly BLOCKING from a sideblog

ability to @ people in the tags so you can pull your friend onto a post without either leaving a comment or interrupting the reblog chain for the next person

replying to specific messages in DMs instead of one strictly chronological thread

more blog aesthetic customization options for mobile

getting a notif when someone responds to your anon ask

fun small limited-time events like the boop day, maybe based around popular tumblr holidays such as Nov. 5th and the Ides of March. this keeps engagement up without interrupting the core functions of the site

music on everyone's pages like myspace. that'd be cool as fuck

I just received a charm casting reading from Vanitas here, and let me tell you, I threw a curveball on purpose and they caught it. I asked for a reading about what to do next with a fictional character I was roleplaying as, and not only did the reading pick up on recent events in the roleplay, but also gave me insight into things to do next just like I asked. Turns out I should lean into my usual scheme of "give the character more familial issues" and that'll work great!

The reading was done surprisingly fast, even in text form, and was detailed enough to work with without wandering into "too much detail to function" territory (which I know well, given that my readings lean towards overload). If you have the money to buy a reading, I recommend Vanitas!

What is Sympathetic Magic?

It’s one of the oldest forms of witchcraft, found in almost every tradition in some way or another.

From poppets to cord cuttings, if you’ve seen any kind of spell work, you’ve likely seen an example of sympathetic magic.

When you understand that everything is connected, it's not hard to see how a representation of a person or situation can actually affect that person or situation.

That is the essence of sympathetic magic.

It allows you to use whatever resources you have at your disposal, no matter how much or how little, to enact your will.

Sometimes it can feel silly preforming it, like you’re a kid again, making mud pies and potions. And sometimes it can feel silly you didn’t think of doing it that way from the beginning.

Anything can be used for sympathetic magic, all you’ve got to do is shift your perspective a little. Tap into your imagination. Look at the world like a Witch.

5 Ways to Do Witchcraft With a Sewing Kit

You don't need fancy tools to practice the craft, hell you don't actually need anything at all to make magick happen. But if you're anything like me, sometimes you just need to do something with your hands to feel like you're doing anything at all. That's why I keep an emergency sewing kit in my bag, even though I can't sew for shit lol. How I use it:

1. Thread

I’ve never found a spell I haven’t been able to do with just a single piece of thread.

Every color serving its purpose, corresponding to various aspects of our lives; green for money, red for love and desire, yellow for friendship, blue for communication, purple for magic, brown for grounding, etc.

And if you’re limited to the barest of basics? That’s okay too. Black or white will do in a pinch.

Black for anything that I want to protect, banish, stop, or relate to Hekate’s domain as my patron deity.

White for healing, or anything I want to draw into myself.

Just cut your piece of thread and focus on your intent while tying your knots to solidify your will. If you’re familiar with numerology and how it relates to what you’re trying to do, feel free to apply that knowledge. Or just tie them until you feel confident it is done. Personally, I'm fond of sets of 3.

2. Scissors

Aside from their practical use, can be consecrated and used to sever the ties of old habits, cut toxic people from your life, or set you free from anything holding you back from being who you want or having the life you want to live. If the thread is symbolic of fate, the power to change that fate can be found in a pair of scissors.

3. Buttons

These can be enchanted to be anything you need, from protective shields to good luck charms. They can act as amulets you can sew into your clothing, or carry like worry stones to remind you of your goal or power.

Alternatively, they can be eyes for poppets, or wards to place in your home; inconspicuous little guards to keep your space and energy clear of negative influence.

4. Safety Pins

Not too different from buttons in that they’re another convenient, inconspicuous way to carry a protective amulet.

Worried about losing your magical button?

Don’t know how to, or even want to sew something into a garment?

Enchant your safety pin and secure it in place for as long as you need it with you. Take it off at the end of the day. You can even recharge it for the next time you need it.

I also love using them as little nets to trap negativity before it can touch me, similar to your traditional evil eye amulets, though a bit more accessible.

5. Sewing Needles

Just as versatile as the other tools, if not more so. You can use them to inscribe your intent into candles. You can use them as protective wards by placing them, crossed, into your curtains, or under your doormat at the entrance of your home.

Enchant them with your intent before using them in mundane ways too; like for comfort and safety before using one to repair a hole in your child’s favorite stuffed animal.

Like everything when it comes to witchcraft; the possibilities are only as limited as your imagination.

Some little things I've learned over a decade of witchcraft:

If you are feel called to work but are tired/drained, sit outside. Take in all the energies around you. Nature can help charge you

Every witch does a little bit of a bunch of types of magic but sticks mainly to one or two in general. You usually won't be eclectic forever. You'll find what magics work best with you.

Never be lazy or cut corners with spirits. Always be respectful and always tell them to leave when you're done

When you see a plant or ingredient with a long list of properties, there are different things at play. Season of collection, the part of the plant, the health of the plant, etc all play a role in impacting which properties it will carry.

Don't call on spirits unless you have confidence and control

Be careful with sea/water magic. Get into it gently and slowly until you have the energy figured out because it can get out of hand quickly.

Adding a little pinch of magic into your breakfast can make a major difference in your day.

Your personal emotions/feelings over something will impact a work

Planting some plants is good, not only to have a garden, but the dirt helps cleanse you too. Get all dirty and muddy. It's good for ya

Not all trees are nice

The more you listen to your intuition, the easier it will be to tell it apart from your anxieties and worries

Incense is very easy to make which is why it's usually cheap to buy. But you can find a million tutorials online on how to make your own personal incense which is great if you want a spell to take effect over a while but also want to infuse the fire energy in it.

The more you work with something the better feel you get for it. Cinnamon goes in almost everything i cook and most of my spells because me and cinnamon just get right along
