Speaking of medieval history, it's fun how the popular accounts are all "the peasantry disliked nobles, but typically loved the King and attributed any harmful decisions to bad advisors", and then the rare examples of surviving testimony from actual peasants are like "I hope the King literally explodes".

People assume, wrongly, that medieval peasants were uniquely stupid and subservient to the political order. This is not true. The truth is that chainmail armor is really hard to get through, and when the guy collecting you taxes is on a horse in full chain, weidling a sword that can kill you from roughly any position, it's hard to argue against unfair taxation models.

I feel like this continues today. People will quip that the reason corrupt governments continue is all due to civilians not overthrowing them, then get angry when asked to layout a plan that addresses the most basic barriers such as:

Geography

Mobility/transportation limitations

Poverty and lack of any saftey net

Lack of/differences in weapons and ability to defend oneself

Surveillance that makes organization on a national scale difficult
