I know I’ve said this endless times before, but I just need to say it again.
Hawai‘i is NOT your playground.
Unsustainable tourism has been destroying our islands for generations now, with overpopulation and overdevelopment causing unaffordable living expenses and forcing so many of my people off our sovereign land.
Tourism gathers endless money and uses it to remove our identity from our own islands. It displaces us to build hotels and restaurants, leaving so many of my people homeless or poverty stricken. Tourism then sterilizes our culture, and forces us to become your tour guides, your waitstaff, your hula dancers, your entertainment.
This is not the life we deserve.
My people are more than backgrounds to your vacation. My people deserve more.
Tourism brings disease, and lets Covid cover our islands in a fog of death. I have lost many loved ones to this illness, I am still loosing loved ones to this illness.
We are still in a pandemic. People are still getting sick. People are still dying.
Hawai‘i is not a place for you to run wildly and spread disease.
Hawai‘i is not merely a vacation destination.
My people and our islands and our culture deserve better.
Do not support tourism in Hawai‘i, support my people instead.

Also not to be emotional about Boromir on this fine Saturday afternoon but I feel like something people often miss is that, in terms of his Adopting Hobbits tendencies, he needs Merry and Pippin WAY more than they need him. Boromir’s spent his whole life with Gondor riding on his shoulders; you can see it in the way he talks at the Council. Cause he’s good at protecting his people! When LotR begins, Boromir is significantly responsible for Gondor standing still strong against Mordor, and so he makes it his identity. He doesn’t see himself as a three-dimensional individual, he sees himself entirely in terms of Gondor and his service to it.
But then, with the Fellowship, not only is he not in charge, he’s the weakest link. And that’s so utterly alien and terrifying to him. You spend your whole life as a public servant, your father’s favor is obviously determined by your success at war, of course you put all your self-worth into providing for others. And suddenly Boromir finds himself incapable of providing, precisely because of all his experience. To Boromir, the war is too personal to conceptualize on the large scale. His love for and desire to protect Minas Tirith, Osgiliath, the Hobbits, etc blinds him to the overarching mission of saving Middle Earth. This also manifests wrt the Ring: its draw on him is so strong because he wants so badly to use its power to protect. “This powerful weapon must not be used” is a lot harder to accept when you’ve been fighting a desperate war your whole life, y'know? And “your desire to protect is making you weaker” is hard to hear when you ascribe the entirety of your self-worth to that protectiveness.
Merry and Pippin, though certainly not battle-hardened, get by alright on their own! But protecting them gives Boromir a sense of usefulness. Teaching them a bit of swordplay, keeping them warm on Caradhras, laughing with them even under the eye of the enemy - Boromir clings to these things, because they give him a sense of worth. In the midst of his confusion and worry, taking care of someone grounds him. He may be frustrated with their mission and Aragorn’s choices, he may feel that he’d be of more use on the front lines with Gondor’s armies, but here is one small way he can do good.
And in the end, it’s what makes him such a damn good tragic hero. The man who’s kept Gondor’s lines standing for years dies failing to protect two halflings who, in the grand scheme of things, are fairly inconsequential. But could it have gone any other way? Boromir doesn’t do the grand scheme of things. His love is so personal and passionate that he’ll undercut the mission and his own life to save what’s near and dear to him - it’s the very strength of his love that brings his death.
+ I also think, in true tragic fashion, that he realizes all this in the moment between downfall and death. That war has scarred him so deeply, he doesn’t know how to live for peace. That the hands of a king must be the hands not of a warrior, who defends from what is without, but a healer, who nurtures that which is within.

We drink respect Boromir juice in this household, kids.
His death scene stuck with me for years. Years. I still cry to this day over him… I simply cannot watch that scene without crying because the emotion. The build up.
Out of all the fellowship I think his death stuck with everyone- even Frodo and Sam when they finally find out. Boromir represented why Frodo stepped forward originally, why it had to be him and no one else. He represented what Merry and Pippin were fighting for, and how hard they had to keep fighting- because he showed them, even when you’re knocked down. Get. Back. Up. Especially for those you love.
He is, and will always, be my favourite fellowship member.
I have so much I want to say about him, but whenever I told about him I get chocked up because he impacted me (at a young age) so much. Truly one of the best characters to be written, plus to see him on screen- Sean Bean did such a great job, such a good job.

The Addams Family renting out rooms in their huge mansion cheaply to broke college students.
The students digging it because the craziness and the bugs are pretty much the same as any other dorm house. Also, Morticia and Gomez treat them all like visiting cousins, not like tenants to abuse and exploit.
One of the tenants is a creative writing major and Gomez and Morticia house them up in the tower because of the quiet and the inspiring view
They’re supposed to be working on a typical coming-of-age story but after living with the Addams for just a week the project is becoming a horror-Gothic-romance
They go to their room after classes one day and find Thing correcting the grammar errors in the manuscript with a red pen
and yeah, the students pay roughly market value for their rooms, but that doesn’t stop gomez from shouting “capital idea!” and handing them wads of cash when they tell him about their weekend plans or what they’re researching, so they basically end up living there for free
In the same vein, half the them have to turn into exceptional fencers, because Gomez just doesn’t give a shit, and if he sees you in the library, its fucking Sword Fighting Time.
Fester and Pugsley find out one of the college students is trying to get into chemistry and woo boy, there has never been a faster study of how to counter various acidic chemical reactions due to “water” balloons in campus history.
Morticia and Grammy are keeping the horticulturalists on their toes with their Black Tulip/Rose hybrids, which can flick their barbs a foot away from their stem system. But it’s fine, one of the kids has managed to breed Aloe with the anti venom.
Lurch makes sandwiches for everyone who’s too much of a coward for Grammy’s cooking. Any music major will find him looming over them, utterly stone faced as they practise until they finish, when he’ll smile, and slowly applaud.
And the spookiest thing of all
Wednesday and Thing will find your thesis. They will critique it in every way imaginable.
I especially love the idea of Gomez spotting a student in the library, throwing a sword at a startled student, shouting, “En garde!” and lunging at him/her with a sword of his own.
Student (later in life), when asked how she jumps from quietly doing research to handling a sudden influx of ER cases so quickly and easily, says, “When you have to snap out of deep concentration on biochem to fight for your life then get back to biochem without losing your train of thought…you learn or you die.”
And you know how chatty Gomez is when he fights, he’d probably help more students work through creative blocks via swordplay than any education counselor in a stuffy little office.
Gomez Addams as the embodiment of the Rubber Duck Method for struggling students via surprise swordplay is directly on brand.
And I firmly believe that long-term residents who finish their degrees suddenly, mysteriously, find that their student loans have been paid off. The family attends every single graduation ceremony and claps and cheers for “their” students as boisterously as any parent. They make a particular point of doing so for the ones who have no other family in attendance.

I think it’s great that Pumpkins (and other squash) were only introduced to Europe around 1600 and the Serbs wasted absolutely no time blaming them for their problems.
Do not ignore what is going on in the Philippines.
An human rights worker named Reina Mae Nasino was jailed and wrongfully accused for owning firearms. She was pregnant by the time she was jailed and gave birth in prison.
At this point, Reina Mae Nasino wasn’t given proper care in prison and was only given one medical visit. Reina gave birth to a girl named River but the lack of prenatal care caused the child to have a low weight and skin discoloration. Nasino also had difficulty breastfeeding her and wasn’t getting any assistance for her child. The counsels asked for the baby to be transferred to a hospital for her care but it was denied by the court.
On October 9, River died due to acute respiratory distress syndrome. She was only 3 months old.
Reina Mae Nasino was supposed to have 3 days to say goodbye but the Court Judge revised it and made it 6 hours, 3 hours for the wake and 3 hours for the funeral. She wasn’t allowed a peaceful grieving as dozens of police and jail guards swarmed the area. On October 14, Reina Mae attended River’s wake in full PPE and handcuffs, surrounded by guards because she was labelled a high profile criminal. The guards tried to cut her time with her child short as they tried to drag her away 2 hours before the visiting time was up. She was also not allowed to take off her handcuffs.
October 16, the day River was to be buried. The funeral wasn’t peaceful or respectful as the police swarmed and guarded the area. The car carrying River sped to the cemetery, not giving time for her family and supporters to catch up. The relatives begged on their knees for the guards to remove Reina’s handcuffs so she can hold her child one last time but they refused.
She wasn’t allowed a peaceful goodbye to her child.
She never even heard her child laugh once.
Reina Mae Nasino is not a criminal. She is a political prisoner and an activist who was treated terribly by the police and the justice system.
They killed her child.
There are over 600+ political prisoners like her in the Philippines that are subject to inhumane treatment due to the Duterte Administration and its disregard for the poor and disenfranchised. Baby River is not the only child who died due to the lack of care by the government.
Activists in the Philippines are getting killed, red tagged and treated as terrorists.
