a sentimental fool.
The body
"mike was the first person to treat el with kindness and like a human being"
put some respect on his fucking name please
lowkey would have been a better father figure for el than hopper
byler was infact queerbait and if you disagree, you're wrong.
queerbait is when the creators deliberately frame same-gender relationships using romantic or queer-coded tropes to attract queer audiences, but never follow through with it. so basically byler.
if byler didn't have a chance of being endgame, they would've made a statement years ago. they know their fanbase and they know majority of it is filled with bylers. and before u say, "if they made a statement it would've spoiled it." exactly. if it would've spoiled the show, that means there was a VERY CLEAR chance of it happening.
byler was 100% queerbait, it wasn't just us getting our hopes up.
not to mention, they dragged out will's love for mike for 5 seasons straight and then watered it down to a silly hallway crush only a couple days later of him asking robin how she knew vickie wanted to date.
netflix has used byler as promotion MULTIPLE TIMES! such as using the crazy together scene in a slideshow of "101 ways to say i love you without saying it", using mike and will for 'bf material' slideshows, and calling el a thirdwheel and saying byler was the real couple? that IS queerbait. it's relationship framing and they framed byler romantically.
I am so angry at volume 2, I started writing fanfic about Will's OC fience and Mike being jealous over them. I don't care that Will and Mike are good together. I want Will to be happy and Mike to suffer.
one day i will not wake up to russian weapons flying directly into our homes. death to russia death to russia death to russia
i really, really hate what they seem to be setting up for el’s character in the final episode. “el has to choose between her boyfriend’s delusions & her sister’s suicide pact” is already wild (like, why is it suddenly mike vs. kali when el’s arc has been connected to hopper since vol. 1?), but i’m angry for another reason.
at this point in the story, el has secretly agreed to kali’s suicide pact & plans to sacrifice herself without telling any of her friends or family. to me, this is pretty clearly foreshadowing that el won’t be going through with kali’s plan in the end. she will either “choose mike” (gag me with a spoon) or forge her own path, because as much as the writing in this volume has already let me down, i do refuse to believe el is about to kill herself in secret when she just spent both volumes berating hopper for attempting to do just that, lmao.
now that we’ve established that, let’s unpack what the duffers have already said about it & what it implies outside of the context of the narrative: kali’s ending is being posed as a tragic but necessary sacrifice that el may be unable to avoid. mike’s ending is being posed as a fairytale ending—optimistic, hopeful, unrealistic:
(source)
hmm, where have we heard that word before? oh, yeah. every single time byler is even mentioned as a possibility in canon, everyone & their mothers—including the duffers—leaps at the opportunity to bitch & moan about how a requited queer love story that takes place in the 80s is simply far too unrealistic to portray, & that the oh-so-beautifully tragic realism in will’s arc of rejection & “self-acceptance” (which vol. 2 already made an absolute mess of, but that’s a conversation for another post) makes for a “much better story”.
i was already angry about this, but now i’m even angrier, because mike’s blatantly unrealistic hope for a happy ending with el (+ the rest of the party) is being explicitly posed as something we, the audience, should be rooting for. why is the heterosexual couple (that only continues to exist due to a queer character’s suffering & sacrifice, mind you) allowed to overcome evil with the self-described unrealistic power of love/hope, but the queer character who has yearned for nothing but romantic connection for three seasons straight isn’t allowed to be rewarded by the narrative whatsoever, lest it supposedly shatter the audiences’ fragile suspension of disbelief? give me a fucking break & say the quiet part out loud: you have no interest in portraying impactful queer stories that serve a coherent narrative. you care about squeezing as much suffering out of will byers’ torture-porn of a character as you possibly can in a cheap attempt at creating something meaningful.
to be as clear as possible: el deserves a happy ending. el deserves to live. el does not deserve to sacrifice herself for the sake of the world after everything she’s already been through. i’m just upset that all this talk of realism seems to go out the damn window as soon as our heterosexual heroes are the topic of conversation. it’s a blatant double standard & i’m over it. it’s not “beautiful”, it’s not “empowering”, it’s just bleak.
low effort vol 2 doodles. fuck you
ep 5: OMG BYLER HUG MIKE GEEKING OUT OVER WILL’S POWERS WE’RE SO BACK
ep 7:
“We asked Finn to carry a lot of emotional weight this season”
DID HE REFUSE?
Why are the duffers acting like queer people need to learn their lesson
it’s like ‘you thought you could be happy? You thought you could get the love of your life? Sike think again!!’
Writing advice from my uni teachers:
If your dialog feels flat, rewrite the scene pretending the characters cannot at any cost say exactly what they mean. No one says “I’m mad” but they can say it in 100 other ways.
Wrote a chapter but you dislike it? Rewrite it again from memory. That way you’re only remembering the main parts and can fill in extra details. My teacher who was a playwright literally writes every single script twice because of this.
Don’t overuse metaphors, or they lose their potency. Limit yourself.
Before you write your novel, write a page of anything from your characters POV so you can get their voice right. Do this for every main character introduced.
This is legit good writing advice, especially the first bullet point! In playwriting class we did a bit where every bit of dialogue had to be an accusatory question and it was glorious.
i just know neil has an in-universe fanbase. i just know a 16yo depressed girl would go to war for him. and i know that girls’ edgier goth older sister would go to war for andrew. and their dad loves kevin.
do you think any of the demos after 05x04 went to vecna & said “sir sir the twink hacked into the mainframe”
"where are all the demos i sent after those kids friends" "well, boss, uhm.. don't shoot the messenger but 😂"
