Taking a break from comms and good omens art to bring you this exclusive first look at The Pitt Season 3 opener🤠
He yelled at the SWAT team as they rushed into the house. What he yelled at them, he couldn’t remember. But Jack yelled at them for their mistakes nonetheless. He made it his mission for them to call them out on their bullshit, their carelessness, and their inability to just fucking knock before someone innocent was to be harmed. Some stopped to help him as he struggled to his feet, his dying prosthetic becoming more of a peg leg ornament than a useful limb, but he refused. He didn’t want anyone touching him or the child, who was stable in his arms. They were fucking lucky that the kid was still breathing, or Hell would have frozen over. “I'm so fuckin…” His words were slurred as he spoke, and the world tilted on its axis as he limped away from the house. Jack was done. Tired of this bullshit bureaucracy that came with the police force and hell, healthcare. He was tired of the pointless raids, the targeted people just because they didn’t look like him. He was tired of lowballing numbers to help a scared teen. He was tired of watching Dana get attacked. He was tired of wanting something so much, knowing she would never want him to. He was tired of Robby being a narcissistic asshole. He was tired of being the one stable thing in the ED. He was so fucking tired. Jack wanted to sleep, but he knew better, especially with head trauma. That’s what he had, right? A concussion, perhaps. Hopefully, that wasn't progressing towards a brain bleed or cerebral edema. Boy, those sons of bitches of grenades always seemed to pack a punch, didn't they? What could he have given to have Dana right there, smacking him awake? Would she be mad if he did fall asleep in her arms? Would she be mad if he told her his secrets? How had he fallen ever so hard for her? Wishing nothing more than what she had in life. Wishing that he could have given his wife the life Dana had.

“Alright, alright. I’ll see what I can do.” Abbot hummed loudly as he nervously looked down at the crying baby, “But he’s a grown-up, Dana. He’s going to choose what and when he’s going to listen.”
“He’s acting like a child.”
“No, he’s acting like a grown-up who needs to go on a vacation.”
“A vacation with death, I’d supposed.”
“Dana… sweetheart,” Jack moaned as the baby’s cries seemed to soften to whimpers against his chest. He groaned, shifting his shoulder from the newfound dampness pooling in his breast pockets, “What do you want me to say? He’s not going to listen.”
“Try something! Put him on a 302 or do what you do best– talk to him! How many times has he talked you away from the ledge? Can you at least do that? Can you at least make him promise to come back in one piece?”
“Of course, I will. You, I will. But he…” Jack paused as he glanced down at the baby, who started to doze off again, “he doesn’t like to listen to me half the time either.”
“Then make him Jack Abbott. Make him listen to you or find someone who will.”
“And who, per tell, are you suggesting, Dana? I’m usually the last resort to get Robby to say anything that doesn’t revolve around work.” Jane cooed loudly as she reached out and promptly stuck her fingers in Jack’s mouth. He coughed out a laugh at the attempt, pulling her fingers out of his mouth and patted her back, “Stand down, recruit. No need to put your fingers in questionable orifices, now, ma’am.”
“You know who.” Dana shot him a look with a nervous smile
“Whitaker?” Abbot choked out, meeting Dana’s sharp look as she met him in the center of the room, “ Dana, come on, just because Robby has this ridiculous crush on his kid and won’t admit it doesn’t mean that we should throw him in the fire.”
“We are all burning under these flames, Jack. Robby is dead set on burning us down with him. We can either extinguish these flames or be consumed by them. If you can’t get to him, maybe the kid can."
“And if he doesn’t?” Jack asked honestly as Dana took Jane from his arms and laid her in the bed, “What do we do then?”
“I…” Dana whimpered as she tucked in the baby, lowering her head in short prayer as she cried to herself “I don’t know, Jack. I really… don’t know.”

Tips for Writing Injuries
✧ Broken ribs suck. You don’t just “walk it off.” Breathing hurts. Laughing hurts. Existing hurts. Characters with rib injuries won’t be doing heroic sprints.
✧ Concussions aren’t instant naps. Dazed vision, nausea, dizziness, maybe even personality changes, but they’re not going to collapse neatly like in the movies.
✧ Blood loss is sneaky. It’s not just about dramatic pools of blood. It’s dizziness, confusion, and the body getting cold as circulation tanks.
✧ Adrenaline lies. Someone can take a serious injury and not feel it until the fight’s over. That “I didn’t realize I was bleeding until later” trope? Very real.
✧ Twisted ankles are brutal. One bad step and suddenly running is off the table. Even walking hurts like hell. Perfect way to ground a chase scene.
✧ Burns linger. Even small burns hurt more than most people expect. Blisters, infection risk, constant pain, it’s not just a cool scar later.
✧ Dislocated shoulders = useless arm. Characters can’t keep swinging a sword or firing a gun. They’re basically fighting one-armed until it’s fixed.
✧ Shock is a thing. Pale skin, trembling, rapid heartbeat, and eventually disorientation. A character might not even realize how bad their wound is.
✧ Stitches aren’t magic. Getting sewn up is painful and recovery takes time. They’re not instantly battle-ready after a needle and thread.
✧ Scars tell stories. Some fade, some don’t. Some stay sensitive forever. Don’t forget the aftermath when the wound becomes part of the character.

Quick Tips for Writing Descriptions
⟢ PICK THREE DETAILS MAXIMUM! your reader doesn't need to know every piece of furniture. Give them the broken clock on the mantle, the smell of cigarettes embedded in the couch, the water stain on the ceiling shaped like Italy. Their brain will fill in the rest. You're not writing an insurance inventory!!!
⟢ Use the senses people forget. Everyone does sight and sound, but what about: the metallic taste of fear, the way humidity makes your clothes stick, the phantom itch of being watched, that gross feeling when you touch something unexpectedly wet. GET WEIRD WITH IT
⟢ MOTION IN YOUR DESCRIPTIONS!! (Please?) don't just tell me the curtains are blue, tell me they're "shuddering in the AC blast" or "hanging limp like they've given up." Static description is a sleep aid. Make things MOVE
⟢ Your narrator's voice should COLOR everything! A depressed character won't describe the sunset as "beautiful mauve and amber streaking across the sky," they'll think "the sun's dying again, doing its whole performance art thing with the clouds"
⟢ Stop with the mirror descriptions! :( "She looked in the mirror and saw her auburn hair and green eyes" NO. Banned. Forbidden. Find literally any other way. Have another character notice. Show through action. Slip details in naturally. The mirror thing is lazy and we all know it
⟢ Similes and metaphors: COMMIT OR DON'T DO IT! "like" is not a get-out-of-jail-free card. "Her anger was like a storm" is BORING. "Her anger rolled in with the methodical inevitability of a hurricane, and he was standing in a trailer park in Florida" now we're TALKING
