Maybe a weird ask, but I'd like a second opinion on something my friend said if you're willing to give it. Your blog plus marvel rivals made me more interested in getting into hawkeye, and basically everybody online says if you want to get into hawkeye, you should read the fraction run. My friend (hawkeye fan) heard me say that and was really insistent I don't do that because "It's really popular for a reason, it's very good, but it'll paint a very incompletely picture of clint" and told me if I don't want to read any avengers or west coast avengers or things like that I should read his solo 80's run, blindspot, fraction, and freefall. He also gave me some bonus stuff (the first half of every solo avengers, and old man hawkeye "if [I] don't mind branching out of 616") basically, are these good recommendations? And is freefall really one of hawkeye's best comics because he says that all the time.

first off, me and your friend:

so! it depends on how much you want to read to start with, and what angle you wanna approach clint as a new reader. i have lots of different versions of reading recs depending on which approach, so i'll just tackle what you presented:

clint's solo 80s run (hawkeye vol. 1) is his first solo, and only 4 issues. i would absolutely read it before reading fraction and aja's run (hawkeye vol. 4). it introduces clint's relationship to bobbi and is kind of foundational to v4, what with clint being off his game, down-on-his-luck, powering through, and it introduces his deafness. gruenwald (the writer) is also referenced in v4.

only the first half of each solo avengers was rec'd bc the second half of each issue is dedicated to a different character, and is generally unrelated to the story in the first half. thus, each clint story in solo avengers (barring a few issues where he's the only story) is about 11 pages. so they're short, succinct, mostly self-contained narratives, and a little goofy, so it's light reading that gives you a feel for clint's tactics and general (80s) vibe.

hawkeye: blindspot is a good beginner's rec at any point bc it's only 4 issues and has several flashbacks interspersed throughout that not only go over clint's childhood backstory (which is also partially covered by v1), but are a sort of sparknotes of clint's life up until that point. so if you decide to delve into clint further with additional reading, a blindspot panel may help with future pattern recognition. this series also came out a year before v4, so read it beforehand.

old man hawkeye i'm not sure would have as much impact if you're unfamiliar with thunderbolts? but if you're really into desolate, post-apocalyptic settings i guess you could venture into it if it inspires you to read thunderbolts to see what all that was about. i would say it's certainly nowhere to start, but if that's your thing, maybe...? also, as you've gathered from the title, this AU clint is an old man

hawkeye: freefall is excellent (and 6 issues), but probably not necessarily somewhere to start either. rosenberg, the writer, also wrote clint in tales of suspense #100-104 a few years before this series (many read tales of suspense for a short clint and bucky romp). i do wonder if people are able to delve into freefall without having any ronin!clint experience beforehand. reading hawkeye & mockingbird before it might get someone there, character arc wise? maybe a few haphazard ronin panels to get the Vibe about what was going on during the angsty new avengers era could help?

but of course, freefall is more lighthearted...initially.

as you've probably noticed from the amount of issues for most of the series mentioned, hawkeye v4 being 22 issues is quite the aberration for a clint title. only solo avengers was longer (though it got renamed avengers: spotlight halfway through), but since clint's mostly just in the first half of each issue, it comes out to about the same. most of clint's solos are limited series or swiftly cancelled; he's spent most of his appearances on team series. however, clint-led team titles used to have lengthy runs.

now, what's happening RIGHT NOW:

in may the question paper for NEET leaked. that's the national medical entrance exam. over 2.2 million students took it. cancelled. years of studying, families' savings poured into coaching, gone overnight because someone sold the paper. students died by suicide after. these were kids who wanted to be doctors.

and out of that came a protest movement. a gen z group called the cockroach janta party, started by a 30 year old named abhijeet dipke, got 22 million instagram followers within DAYS. they've been doing a sit-in at jantar mantar in delhi demanding education minister dharmendra pradhan resign.

and then there's sonam wangchuk. if you've watched 3 idiots, he's the real engineer the character was based on. built solar schools in ladakh. invented ice stupas so himalayan villages have water. spent his whole life on education. he's 59 and he's been on hunger strike for 17+ days now. reporters went to see him this week and he was too weak to talk. and the troll armies are calling him "anti national" and "foreign funded". a man starving himself for other people's children. that's the thing here, anyone who asks a question is suddenly a traitor.

it's not one incident, it's everywhere you look:

• infrastructure worth thousands of crores failing within months of the ribbon cutting. tunnels collapsing in regions where heavy rain is a guarantee, not a surprise.

• youth unemployment near 10% for ages 15 to 29, 13.6% in cities. in a country of 1.42 billion where more than half the population is young.

• only about the top 3% of indians earn above 10 lakh a year. meanwhile billionaire wealth keeps ballooning and the headlines celebrate it.

• manipur burned for over two years. an ethnic conflict, tens of thousands displaced, and the prime minister barely said the word manipur while it happened.

• journalists raided. critics' houses bulldozed. activists sitting in jail for years without trial under laws like UAPA. our press freedom ranking has cratered.

• even the petrol is a fight now, ethanol blending pushed through while drivers complain about their engines and get no straight answers.

and through all of it, the PM, who came to power on religious polarisation (americans, sound familiar?), travels abroad for photo ops and has not held one single open press conference in over a decade. not one.

what i'm asking:

if you're not indian: share this. our media mostly won't cover any of it because the big outlets are owned by the same billionaires the government serves. the only reason wangchuk's fast is getting any coverage is people refusing to look away.

if you ARE indian: speak up even if you're comfortable. especially if you're comfortable. join the protests. add to this, correct me, translate it. staying quiet is a choice when nothing in this post touches your life.

india is not "dirty". india was robbed, and it's being robbed again, from the inside this time. but it's also the country where a 59 year old will starve for strangers' kids and 22 million young people will rally behind a party literally named after cockroaches, because cockroaches survive everything.

we can still save her. but only loudly.

it's always intrigued me how bruce's past experiences with violence (and sometimes abuse) isn't emphasized more when people talk about what influences his actions & identity as batman, especially because of how much it adds to the emphasis that he puts on protecting children but also in working to rehabilitate villains or criminals and (as bruce wayne, provide them the resources to do so) because of his genuine and unwavering belief in redemption, and allowing them the chance to grow and get over their own past (and past mistakes)!! much to think about...
