i hope they never stop using floppy disk icons to indicate saving your file. doesn't matter how obsolete they are it's like honouring someone with a portrait on your currency
Floppy disks (the symbol) will live on far past floppy disks (the medium)

As far as I remember, the very first floppy disk icons (like the one Susan Kare designed in 1984) were used by various GUIs (ex: OS System 3.x, Windows 2.x, workbench) to designate disk drives.
If you wanted to save, you usually had to use the drop-down menus.
I don't remember exactly when the first floppy save icons arrived. I think with my first version of Excel in the mid 90s. According to this retrocomputing group , it could be around 1991 with Turbo Pascal and Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows and later Word 6.0.1 in Mac Office 4.2.1.
