I've seen a lot of autistic/adhd people complaining about "arbitrary tone indicators," stuff beyond /s and /j.
And yes, /s and /j is super helpful for us, because it's hard for us to tell when people are being sarcastic.
The thing is, all the entitlement I see in "stop using other tone indicators!!" makes me a little upset because not all tone indicators are for autistic and adhd people.
Please understand that.
For example: /nm (not mad). If you have autism, you might see that and think, "I can tell that you're not mad, why are you using it?"
Same with /nbh (nobody here). That one's used after a vent like "oh my god someone is pissing me off" in a chat or server so that people don't think they're being vaguely talked about.
The thing is, those two tone indicators are super helpful for people with anxiety disorders. Or any other disorder that might make you think that others are mad about you and talking about you when they aren't.
I might be autistic but I also have generalized anxiety and it's so helpful to me when I see people confirm that they're not mad, they're not talking about me.
And if you're autistic/adhd and you really don't want to learn other tone indicators? No one can make you, of course. But please don't stop people from trying to make life a little easier for other people.
