i might have posted about this before but something i think about all the goddamn time is how when i worked at the gym there was a guy who came in a lot who was obviously paranoid schizophrenic and had delusions about the government putting chips in him etc and one time his locker at the gym got broken into and we weren't allowed to release security footage unless the police requested it so one of the workers told him he'd have to file a police report (which is what we told everyone when they asked for footage) and then one day the police showed up and told us he wouldn't be coming back because he tried to file a police report to find his stolen stuff and they realized he was an illegal immigrant and then deported him back to the country he came from. i think about him all the time and google his name every so often to see if anything comes up or if he's passed away. all things considered i've had a pretty privileged life and his whole situation was one of the most terrible evil things i've ever personally witnessed. and there's just nothing i can do about it.

on psychologytoday.com if you search for therapists and select "female" in the filter then there's a little blurb at the bottom of the page politely chastising you for preferring a female therapist, and even suggesting you need to unpack some things if you prefer a woman. they use phrasing like "believe", "imagine", and "adhering too rigidly to a gender preference".

if you search for male therapists, the blurb totally changes and encourages prospective clients to start with a therapist they feel comfortable with. sexism is baked into e v e r y t h i n g

Women’s desire to connect with other women is framed as ignorant. Men’s desire to connect with other men is encouraged and validated.

Women’s mistrust of men is demonized. Both men’s and women’s mistrust of women is validated.

All of this reasoning aligns perfectly with the excuses Christians (and other religious people) give for excluding women from holding important positions within their organizations: “Well, of course men will want to talk to other men, it wouldn’t be very considerate to ask them to talk about their manly concerns with a mere woman. Considering that psychotherapy is just Religion 2.0 (confess your sins weekly, pray meditate and do affirmations, engage in rituals, non-falsiabillity, equating belief in it with morality), it checks out.

Anyway, female therapists are just as emotionally damaging as male therapists but they typically won't sexually harass you. So if you really must go to therapy (don't), they should at least respect your wish in choosing the sex of the wanker you want to confess your sins to.

I've also posted this in the past, but there's an inundation of for-profit "graduate schools" (particularly in recent decades) that have little to no admissions screening. Basically anyone can pay for a therapy degree.

I think more people on radblr should be talking about sweatshops, especially in the garment industry.

• Around 80% of sweatshop workers are women. Some employers force them to take birth control and pregnancy tests to avoid having to pay for maternity leave. Pregnant women are routinely denied sick leave to visit doctors, terminated from their contracts early, or left without any maternity leave when their short-term contracts are not renewed.

• Women are more likely than men to experience minimum wage violations. According to one study, "30 percent of the women workers in our sample experienced minimum wage violations, compared to 20 percent of the men". It's easy not to support this kind of abuse. Do not buy clothes first-hand. Only buy from thrift shops and second-hand apps, or find ethical brands and investigate where and how they make their clothing (hint: if a t-shirt costs $3, it's not ethical). Patch your old clothes. Consider learning basic sewing (it's not as difficult as it seems!)

I don't care how cheap Shein and Temu are. I don't care how much you think you need that specific Zara coat. Buying clothes directly harms women and avoiding it is a very easy way to help.
