Yep. Ilya grew up in an environment in which the people around him could behave unpredictably at any moment. He had an irascible-to-violent father and an abusive and bullying brother. He also had a mother whose moods he could probably not predict or ameliorate, as much as he loved her. Depression often manifests as irritation. All of it would have been terrifying. He would have been desperate to figure out how he could keep her happy.

Little kids ADAPT. They learn to watch their parents' faces for context clues. What can I do with my body, my face, my behavior, not to set this man off? (The vacant stare-and-nod at the Olympics.) How well can I learn to read her over time, so that I can do that bit she likes so much, where I pretend to fall down, before she starts to get too sad?

Who is your ally, and when? Does my mother like the woman at the market? Does she smile more when we come home from there and they got a chance to have a little conversation about the grapes? Will my brother be meaner if we spend time with that neighborhood boy who also plays hockey? Well, when we play at the pond in the park instead of at the rink, sometimes it's okay.

Yeah, Ilya Rozanov is "always everywhere" and seems to "know everything" about the people in the league. Ilya went to Scott Hunter night at that club to be supportive and also to observe. Who was there? How were they behaving? How long did they stay? What did they make of his presence?
