I suck at tagging. I try to tag nsft, weecest, weirdcest, and other ships aside from wincest.

I'm generally dynamic specific (top dean/bottom sam.) SALS. will block liberally.

on my first watch of spn, watching s8 now. this fandom is nearly as old as I am and I'm not pressed about being spoiled, but if you are, please be aware I am not consistent about tagging spoilers.

I have not come up with a tagging system beyond like established subtags (weecest, weirdcest etc). I'll add tags for ease of navigation to this post as I make them up <3

it’s funny when i see people doing abuse denialism re either sam or dean because john is soooo sopping wet on camera. like listen sometimes all you need to see the abuse is to just LOOK AT HIS KIDS. LOOK AT HIS KIDS DO THEY LOOK LIKE THEY WEREN’T? ABUSED? ARE THOSE NORMAL ADULTS TO YOU?

the abuser need not be the shadowy figure in the dark with a beer bottle in one hand screaming for his kids to get his belt. sometimes the abuser is your father who loves you. not sure why that’s so hard to understand.

Neglect is a kind of abuse, and in that regard especially, John was abusive. Beyond that it's all speculation. Did he ever hit them, spanking or a smack up the back of the head? Oh yeah, most likely. Was he an emotional wreck of a human being who, even if unwittingly, made that his kids' problem? I am certain he did. Did he withhold praise and thus cause his boys to believe that they were never good enough? For sure.

John Winchester 100% loved his boys, but he was still not a good dad.

The reason why there might be hesitancy to label him as abusive is that, while there are many different types of abusive behavior, the assumed default is physical abuse. Just like how when I mention that I grew up in New York, people assume that I mean New York City, forgetting about the fact that there is a whole, big ass state with that name that is not part of NYC. So to, when you mention someone was an abusive parent, the assumption is that they hit their kid(s). So people here 'abusive' and immediately think beating on a kid, and if that isn't something they think the person actually did, then they'll push back and say, no he's not an abuser. But if you ask if he neglected them, they'll say that of course he did.
