Jonathan Rudl of Junk Rabbit Hauling, Syracuse, is a thief.

Specifically, an art thief. Animator and illustrator Marta Tesoro (based in Melbourne, Australia) is a good friend of mine and one of the most reliable and hardworking people I know in this field. Like most freelance illustrators she is not wealthy; her drawings are her livelihood and worth protecting. Here’s a picture she did of a cute bunny-wunny:

Jonathan Rudl stole this illustration to use for his garbage-hauling business. He used it on the business’ website, facebook page, craigslist ad, etc.

Did he pay Marta for the use of this illustration? No he did not. Did he even offer to? Well, apparently, he did. Clearly he doesn’t like to think of himself as a thief. Here he is on facebook, offering work:

Just to follow up, here’s pillar of the community and spirit-filled man of God Jonathan Rudl (of Junk Rabbit Hauling, Syracuse’s Premier Junk Hauler) abusing and threatening people on the internet.

That one just above, he deleted. Some tiny spark in his brain must have penetrated the fog. From this point he retreats from cocky threats and abuse to an attempted “Here now let’s be reasonable” tone, still trying, at first, to project an impression of himself as a power not to be trifled with. (Keep in mind this is immediately following all the nasty, vicious stuff above.)

Inevitably he transitions to pleading, but still with a sense that he, somehow, is the wronged party in this situation. And finally his twitter account is deleted, probably by him.

Again: kind of funny, yeah, maybe? But also legitimately awful and upsetting. Don’t threaten my friends, Jonathan Rudl, especially not my women friends. It’s a little old-fashioned of me but that is a crime from which you can never redeem yourself, as far as I’m concerned.

Dave Abbott and Andrew Goldsmith created our beautiful video for Epic Delay using a couple of X Box Kinects and many, many, many hours at the computer. The first time I saw it, my heart was in my mouth - the simple story that unfolds was so perfect for the song. Lonely but hopeful.
