Your professor will not be happy with you if he says the Stanford Prison Experiment shows human nature and you say it shows the nature of white middle class college-aged boys.
Like he will not be happy at all.
For real though. That experiment. Scary shit.
This reminds me of a discussion that I read once which said Lord of the Flies would have turned out a hell of a lot differently if it was a private school of young girls (who are expected to be responsible and selfless instead), or a public school where the children werenât all from an inherently entitled, emotionally stunted social class (studies have shown that people in lower socioeconomic classes show more compassion for others). Or that the same premise with children raised in a different culture than the toxic and opressive British Empire and itâs emphasis on social hierarchy and personal wealth and status. And that what we perceive as the unchangable truth deep inside humanity because of things like Lord of the Flies and the Stanford Prison Experiment, is just the base truths about what happens when you remove any accountabilty controlling one social group with an overwhelming sense of entitlement and an inability to feel compassion.
I will always reblog this.
I just wanna say that the Lord of the Flies was explicitly written about high-class private school boys to make this exact point. Golding wrote Lord of the Flies partially to refute an earlier novel about this same subject: The Coral Island by R.M. Ballantyne. Golding thought it was absolutely absurd that a bunch of privileged little shits would set up some sort of utopia, so his book shows them NOT doing that.
This is also generally true about most psychological experiments.
Thereâs an experiment called âThe Ultimatum Gameâ. It goes something like this.
Subject A is given an amount of money (Say, $100).
Subject A must offer Subject B some percentage of that money.
If Subject B accepts Subject Aâs offer, both get the agreed upon amount of money. If Subject B refuses, no one gets any money.
The most common result was believed to be that people favored 50/50 splits. Anything too low was rejected; people wanted fairness. This was believed to be universal.
And then a researcher went to Peru to do the experiment with members of the indigenous Machiguenga population, and was baffled to find that the results were totally different.
Because, to the Machiguenga, refusing any amount of free money (even an unfair amount) was considered crazy.
So the researcher took his work on the road (to 14 other âsmall scaleâ societies and tribes) , and to his shock found the results varied wildly depending on where the test was done.Â
In fact, the âuniversalâ result? Was an outlier.Â
And thatâs the problem. 96% percent of test subjects for psychological research come from 12% of the population. Stuff that we consider to be universal facts of human nature⌠even things like optical illusions, just⌠arenât.
You can read an article about it here.  But the crux of it is that psychology is plagued with confirmation bias, and people are shaped more by their environment than we realize.Â

happy one year
I canât believe itâs been a whole year since Steven Universe was an enjoyable show.
I wanted to draw a new group shot of the Super Lesbian Animal RPG party to replace the rapidly aging 2015 promo art and whoops!! It ended up taking the better part of a week, because I made it the most intricate piece of digital art Iâve ever drawn. But itâs really nice to have a new piece of art to represent the game with the whole party together in an actual environment

IM WHEEZING
This is gonna be rambling and out of sorts but like. I want to put out my stance as a trans sga ace person and Iâm sure thereâs been plenty of people who have said this more eloquently than me but:
If you arenât trans or sga you arenât part of the LGBT community. Like, plain and simple as that.
Iâm going to start by saying that when I was 14 I thought I was aroace and I came out to my mom and told her I probably wasnt ever going to want to have a relationship. She reacted bad. Like legit screaming fight and calling me a sinner bad. It was some of the most ridiculous bullshit Iâd ever been exposed to. And it sucked and it hurt that she didnât understand and even tho Iâve moved away from that identity, it still sucks to remember that moment. And this is serious shit that needs to be addressed, aroace people do have a lot of interpersonal stigma that needs to be talked about and remedied.
But see. Thatâs the key difference. Aroace issues are interpersonal, not societal. And the aroace community has very different goals from LGBT people as a result.
Aroace community initiatives are all about Visibility and Education. And those are noble goals, giving people access to this knowledge is great, but for LGBT people the kind of laser focus on Visibility isnât great.
LGBT people are hypervisible. Trans women get mocked in media constantly, gay men and lesbians are stereotyped and demonized out the wazoo, everyone Knows weâre here. We donât have a visibility issue.
Weâre busy focusing on fighting the societal laws that literally restrict our freedoms. Because at the end of the day if youâre not an sga ace person, youâre not going to walk into an apartment complex with your spouse and be denied a home by a homophobic leasing agent. Youâre not going to propose to the person you love and then have a baker refuse to make you a wedding cake because they believe youâre such an abomination that they think getting money from you is a sin. Youâre not going to walk down the street holding your partnerâs hand and have to fear for your life. Youâre not going to tell your co-workers about your spouse and face social isolation, harassment, possibly being fired. Youâre not going to be sent to conversion therapy specifically for your orientation and tortured until youâre too afraid to express your love anymore. Youâre not going to be refused the right to donate blood.
If youre not a trans ace person, youâre not going to be stopped on your way to the bathroom and sexually harassed about your âreal gender.â Youâre not going to be denied work. Youâre not going to be forced against your will to identify as a gender you are not.
There are no anti-ace laws. Theres no mandate to have sex or be in relationships. There are social pressures, YES, and Iâm not denying that. And social pressures suck. But what youâre dealing with is fundamentally different from sga & trans experiences.
The thing about being ace is that it really is more of an interpersonal than professional disclosure. If someone irl asked me about my partners Iâd have to talk about my boyfriends. I wouldnât mention my level of sexual attraction or engagement because thatâs not what was asked or what is socially appropriate to disclose. My boyfriends know Iâm acespec because itâs relevant to our relationship, my boss would not.
Aromanticism is a mildly different story, because this is when you would reveal, âoh, Iâm not in a relationship, Iâm not really interested in them.â This could be met mostly with confusion, misunderstanding, disbelief, jokes, or âitâs a phase"s. Which all suck! They do and theyâre issues that need to be addressed and dealt with, but once more theyâre fundamentally different from the concerns sga people have to deal with when bringing their orientations into the professional realm.
Aro/ace people are perfectly valid, memeatic as that term has become. These are legitimate identities with definitely legitimate issues. But the facts are that the aroace community has vastly different priorities from the LGBT community and this is why they are fundamentally separate.
LGBT spaces and resources shouldnât be expended in a direction that takes focus away from actual LGBT issues like the ones discussed above. Aroace people need to rally together and get their own resources in shape so they can create a more focused and targeted attempt to do what they want to accomplish. Because tugging at LGBT resources and insisting on including cishet aces, whose experiences are so fundamentally different from trans sga folksâ, in LGBT spaces is detrimental to all of us in the long run.
And all the sitting around flinging insults at LGBT people and comparing them to bigots or their oppressors and being disgusted by LGBT people empowering themselves through displays of affection that theyâre demonized for in every other circle just kinda proves the rift that exists between these communities and how much their priorities differ.
Anyways Iâm done that was a lot of text
