FEATURING THE AMAZING @allicatttx

Sis voice tho!
i was NOT expecting to love this as much as i do
THIS GAVE ME SO MANY CHILLS OMFG
Not only was I the only one who ended up getting a ticket for my particular screening of the Backrooms... but also, besides the concessions staff, the entire theater was completely empty
I think I may have had the most appropriate viewing experience possible
I swear I have been to this exact theater two or three times in a dream. The color pallet, the doors, etc. Maybe that's just modern theater vibe.

OUT OF TOUCH THURSDAY
but im out of my head when you’re not around…
happy birthday.
this is the only out of touch thursday you can reblog this
Because I’m more of a folklore and myth fan than modern fantasy fan I had no idea kobolds are usually depicted as lizards in the West and dogs in the East.
I’ve read up on why (in the original dnd manual kobolds looked like weird lizard dog people and afterwards some creators focused more on the lizard aspects while others focused more on the dog aspect, which resulted in some creators depicting them as any random animal they like) but in folklore kobolds are literally just the German version of gnomes, or the Scandinavian nisse/tomte.
They are both small and dress like the peasant class of their respective countries, they both have the ability to transform into animals and inanimate objects, though they tend to change back pretty quickly suggesting they don’t have the “stamina” to keep the illusion up for long, they act as house helpers and protectors but will turn nasty if disrespected sometimes going so far as to burn the whole house down, and they also work on ships both as helpers and bad omens. The ship thing overlaps so much that if you look up ship kobold or ship gnome (skibsnisse) you get the same pictures.
The only big difference I could find is that folklore kobolds are also known to work in mines, though I wouldn’t be surprised if you get some mine nisse/tomte in Norway or Sweden that I just haven’t come across yet. The Danish nisse variant is also known to have a wide variety of jobs like farmer, church helper, scribe and miller.
My general impression is that folklore kobolds are sliiightly meaner gnomes but not by much, so while I’d never tell fantasy kobold fans to change anything about their beloved creature, if I were ever to make a fantasy world I’d depict them as the bad boy relative of the nisses who are very close knit with humans, even living with them, while kobolts prefer more unsavory or unrefined humans and naturally encountering dwarfs more often in the mines, and have tomtes live in nature with more close relations to wild animals but still relatively close to humans and put them all under the species of gnome.
Another one of the many, many, MANY instances where D&D literaly changes the world's perception of a piece of folklore.
Seriously the amount of "folklore" and "legend" stuff in fiction today that comes JUST from D&D tells a lot about how, for example, there's a big Americanization of media, and how a lot of people rely on modern fiction to tell legends rather than study old sources, traditional art, or folklore analysis.
I understand the confusion of foreign fanatasy kobolds, when I first saw art of them online I was really surprised. But saying german Kobolde are just gnomes is also a bit misleading, I think. One of the main characteristics of Kobolde is the mischievous nature as pranksters. Sure, they're (sometimes) house spirits that can be helpful is befriended, but their occupying a home is more of a haunting, with the inhabitants having to constantly look out for the little guys' tricks. While you do have the occasional use of Kobold used to translate Tomte or Nisse (like in Mathilde Mann's translation of Nils Holgersson and Johann Friedrich Hartknoch's of Andersen's Nissen hos Spekhøkeren) it's much more common for those creatures to be rendered Wichtel, a similar creature. To translate the secret book of gnomes, on the other hand, the word Heinzelmännchen was used, creatures particularly connected with hardwork, according to a legend of Cologne. There's also the fact that, compared to Wichtel or Heinzelmänner, Kobold has a bit more of demonic connotation. in legend on witches, Kobolde were identified as their familiar spirits, and in Upper Lusatia, the trickster figure of Pumphutt was alternatively called either a Kobold or a Hexenmeister (warlock)
All in all, if you were to ask me a proper english translation for Kobold, I'd say goblin is the most appropriate term. Most english-language media featuring goblins gets translated with Kobolde in german.
It's really just that early D&D needed enemies to fill in every hit dice level and type category, leading to a lot of "synonym speciation." It’s particularly notable with the undead, where Ghost, Spectre, Wraith, Ghast, and such are different types of creature.
And then artists and writers had to flesh these stat blocks out and distinguish them in the lore, leading to an explosion of fantasy creatures that were more than the original "magical little folk" or "brutish minion." One interesting example is the gnoll, which began as a vaguely defined monster "gnole" in a Dunsany short story. The name was justified as some sort of gnome/troll hybrid, before writers used it for demon-worshipping hyenafolk.
There are no synonyms in D&D.
Follow up on why Kobolds in Japan are more doglike! https://youtu.be/s3GmeZ0AbRI Pointy Hat on Youtube went and looked into this whole thing and it does trace back to original Dungeons and Dragons. Not sure if it was technically the 1st or 2nd edition monster manual, but it described Kobolds as "Doglike". So when using D&D as a loose basis, Wizardry (a video game) used a lot of the monster descriptions as a starting point. Wizardry was pretty popular in Japan (more popular than early D&D) so this was their main point of reference. D&D did get to Japan in the mid-80s. The art for the Kobold is in a crease on one of the Japanese manual's art pages, so it's hard to make out, but the text is a direct translation, indicating they look like dogs.
So the problem is "but pot take like an hour to kick in, Santa would be long gone!" Groups bakes too batches of cookies, One LOADED for a Merry Christmas they have planned and one for Santa, because one of them always leaves cookies for Santa, it's like his big family tradition and he isn't breaking it for his first Christmas away from home. So they begrudgingly put the four big cookies out for Santa and take their four big pot brownies to the other room to party. About 90 minutes later, they are playing a video game and one of them goes, "wait... shouldn't we be at least a little... ya know... by now?" "Hey... yeah! What the hell [Name of one that bought the pot]." "Dude it was guaranteed to be solid, even when baked into... fuck who put out the pot cookies for Santa?" "Sorry! I thought you marked them with a S for Santa!" "It was an S for SPECIAL as in SPECIAL cookie... Let's go grab them" They open the door and walk into the hall as a group to see Santa take a bite out of the fourth and final cookie. "Uh... Santa... don't be mad..." Boom. Santa has time to tell them what to do before getting to the most insane trip put to cinema. One of the would be stoners has to call her girlfriend who is veterinary school cause everyone is afraid of the reindeer and she is like an animal whisperer. The one who wanted to leave the cookies out has to stay and watch over the soon to be stoned St. Nick, and it flips between wholesome reinforcing that he is on the Nice list and Santa trying to get McDonalds at 2am on Christmas Eve.

Doctor: $140,000 a year
Furry artist on Patreon: $160,000 a year
I’m sorry for the inaccuracies, Doctor Yiff
Well, furry artists are typically more competent and courteous than your average doctor, so I can see that.
Did you just legitimately tell me that a person who draws wolf ass is more competent than a dude who spent 8+ years in a university to give you your lung transplant?
doctors are bullshit and furry artists perform an infinitely more valuable service to society compared to them
You will die in 7 days
It took doctor’s like 10 years to diagnose what was wrong with me, some insisting I was faking for attention while a furry artist I knew just went “that sounds like crohn’s” after hearing me complain once and ended up being right
Also I can’t go to a doctor and ask them to draw Rouge the Bat wider than she is tall with tits to match, now can I
You could if you weren’t a fucking coward
