At social functions, Shane finds a cozy place, takes his one (1) beer with him and let's people come to him, listens to their conversations, contributing only if necessary. Ilya, on the other hand, takes hold of front centre and entertains his court, he makes sure everyone has a drink and food, introduces people to each other and encourages mingling around. Both are swarmed with people that best suit their characters, and through this all they share small glances, silent conversations to make sure the other one still wants to be here.
It's kinda crazy how much it irritates me that in the show the Pike twins are called Ruby and Emma and not Ruby and Jade. Especially, since I noticed it just now...after rewatching the show for more time than I feel comfortable admitting.
Thinking about their first time in 1410 after the photoshoot: how much do you think did it flatter Shane, an overachiever and perfectionist, always striving to best all others ( especially Rozanov) to hear: " no. The opposite. Is too much, too good." ?
Mama Yuna made sure that Shane's aware of his retirement funds and manages his money responsibly and at one point he must've seen Ilya as someone he will have to take care of as well, because ilya spends his money on fast cars ( and probably other stupid shit) until he discovers that Ilya is just like most 1st gen immigrants: sure, he sends money to his family as show od filial piety and buys fast cars, designer clothes and jewellery, but he also lives with a scarcity mindset, looks where to cut cost and maximise savings: he will and can make small repairs instead of paying someone else. Just because Ilya likes the finer things in life doesn't mean his retirement fund is lacking or his other funds created for specific reasons, like their future children, or major house repairs, or for emergencies or sudden illnesses... ilya thought of it all and saved up and after Shane finds that out, he gets extremely horny
Re-reading Heated Rivalry, and I am familiar with the plot of The Long Game, so when I tell you the gasp I gasped when I saw this in the epilogue:
"He tripped me! Hey, what the fuck, ref! That was tripping!" Shane glared up at the ref, and then at Ilya, who was looming over him (I don't want to give too much spoilers away).
"You fell," Ilya said.
"I didn't fall. It was tripping."
"Yes. Was you tripping over your own skates."
How did I not notice this before? Was this a coincidence? What amazing foreshadowing!
in Game Changer there is no mention of Shane which is so bizarre. I know the book is about Scott and Kip, but even Ilya is mentioned while Shane is not even a thought in Scott's head.
This makes me believe that Shane was created after Game Changer idea took over, but in the books so much popularity is put on Shane's character that I find it incredibly funny how in retrospect it looks like Scott doesn't even bother thinking about Shane, his and of his teammates, coaches, etc. thoughts are only about Rozanov
I'm rereading Game Changer as part of a two person book club I started with a friend who is trying to read more, and am I crazy or did Skip really had a timeline from Jan 14th to July? Like, Hollanov gets a reputation for their messy timeline but this is some next level... Scott Hunter is never beating those U Haul Lesbian allegations.
This is making me think of Ilya and Shane and I dont know why but the white cat is giving relaxed Shane enjoying his tea and the other one is Ilya, just enjoying his husband's company.
Hurt my own feelings today remembering that everything Shane was afraid would happen once the rest of the world found out about Ilya and him, actually happened
Shane loves when Ilya is his weighted blanket but can realistically stand it for 30 min max before he overheats. Ilya pouts every time he has to move.
Shane and Ilya are one of those jealous couples that think only they get to see the other one in a special way, that no one else gets to...like Shane is convinced only he gets Ilya Premium, which is a caring and loving person who takes care of all of Shane's needs and makes sure that they always have ginger ale in house or hotel or the place they're visiting. So he gets a bit jealous when Ilya takes care of Luca or Troy or Harris...he gets that they're his friends and Luca is basically his son, but he still is perturbed when Ilya is showing them the same kindness and care he should keep reserved only for Shane and a jealous Shane is a hilarious Shane, because everyone can see through his act of nonchalance. Shane also gets jealous sometimes of the way the Centaurs are with Ilya. They are everything he hoped Voyageurs would be. And sure, Centaurs are now his team as well, but it still hurts when he thinks about it.
Post TLG, fic idea:
Shane finds out about AO3, more specifically the tag hurt/no comfort and it's about Ilya dying on the plane and he gets mad at the authors for writing all those heartbreaking scenarios where Shane is alone in this world, without Ilya and then he's sad because that could have been a reality and Ilya finds him crying, finds out the reason why and starts his crusade to erase those stories or even AO3 completely. He gives up on the second one, because he finds out about mpreg...but he leaves nasty comments and threatens authors till he gets banned 🤣
Once married, Shane gets angry on Ilya's behalf when someone random talks about Ilya being mean and Shane knows that it doesn't bother Ilya but he can't stand it when people think Ilya is not the marshmallow fluff of a person that he actually is. Like Shane cannot understand how people can be so wrong about a man who will throw himself on the ground thousand times just because it makes Amber laugh. Who spends hours playing tea party with the twins and helps his father in the garden and with the cooking. Who's patient with the rookies and genuinely cares about his teammates. So yeah, when someone talks about what a mean person Ilya Rozanov is, Shane shuts it down immediately. Even when Ilya is nearby, hears him and is being a lil shit about it for the rest of the day, teasing Shane that he's his knight in shiny Canadian armour.
I wish 2016 never happened and this is one of those “this is what would have happened if you turned left instead of right” scenarios - Kylie was right, I realized a lot this year
