King of a world reborn | Character concept for my original webcomic
i see posts sometimes that say things like “wouldn’t it be cool if ao3 would recommend you fics similar to the one you just read?” or “wouldn’t it be cool if ao3 had a function similar to spotify wrapped that showed you your fic reading habits over the year?” etc. and while on one hand, yes, i can see how these functions might be neat & fun & helpful, i think the fact that ao3 *doesn’t* do any of these typical media website things is actually utterly spectacular
like, i enjoy looking at my spotify wrapped as much as the next person, but when you start to think about that, it is honestly pretty horrifying that spotify collects & stores all this data about its users & can produce it at a moment’s notice. and netflix is not recommending you shows because it actually cares that you watch something you enjoy. it’s recommending them because in the digital age, attention is money & every website is fighting for as much of yours as it can get.
the fact that a website hosting as much media as ao3 doesn’t try to analyze or predict or manipulate your content consumption in any way is truly an oasis in a landscape where user data is the most valuable commodity around. ao3 gives all of the agency to its users & i don’t think we realize just how rare that is. you go looking for the content you want. you sort and filter based on your preferences. you subscribe to the story or author updates you’d like to see. so on and so forth. nothing is recommended for you. no algorithm is trying to maximize the time you spend on the website. you engage with it completely on your own terms. and given the way most media websites choose to operate, that is nothing short of a miracle.
Could we just sit and contemplate the term “archive” here for a while? Because I think this is where a lot of people are approaching AO3 from the wrong perspective.
An archive is a storage space. That is its primary purpose. It exists to store material. Storage. Not retrieval (although retrieval is implied through storage). Not audience. Not social interaction. Storage.
AO3 was created as an archive by a group of people who were aware (some of them exquisitely aware) words have meanings. They could have called it anything - “fanfic hub”, “yet another fanfic site”, etc etc etc. They chose to call it “An Archive Of Our Own”.
Could we just sit with this for a while?

unrelated to last post but topical: as the child of lawyers, I got one thing drilled into me from age 10: don’t fucken talk to cops. never talk to cops.
Don’t talk to cops about insignificant things, it’s a trick to get you into a talking-mode to gradually work to more sensitive questions.
Don’t talk to workers inside a police station (medics, cleaners, people bringing bitter cold coffee), assume they’re all cops.
If you absolutely must talk to a medic, deliver your essential medical information to them in one sentence and go back to ‘no comment’ after that. Do not get in a conversation.
Don’t accept a lawyer offered by the cops or a lawyer you don’t know. ONLY take the lawyer provided by the activist organization you’re part of and ask to see their ID. Do not believe people who claim they represent the same firm. If in doubt, keep your mouth shut.
I've been detained. I've been arrested. I know the instinct when you're around other human beings is to try to relate to them on a human level. I get it, being detained is scary, you're in cuffs, maybe you're in the back of a squad car, or in a van in the event of mass arrest. The first thing you're going to want to do is just... Talk to someone. Anyone. To remember that we're all human here, or to try to win them over.
Don't. Cops aren't people. They aren't your friends, and they aren't there to protect you. They're the bloodhounds of the state. Every comment is a hint, every question has ulterior motives, and they are just trying to pump your for information.
The coffee is a trick, your one call is monitored, they are not your fucking friends. You're an enemy combatant and every single interaction you have with them is a component of an interrogation. Close your mouth, ask for legal counsel, and always remember, cops aren't just allowed to lie to you, it's one of their favorite things to do.
you cannot win a cop over. you cannot befriend a cop. a cop does not see you as a person, they see you as a perpetrator - you should view them the same.
Also be careful about anyone in the same arrest van / cell as you because - cops are known to put undercovers in cells to interrogate the arrested - everything is monitored all the time
Comfort and support your comrades, but do not share personal details or discuss anything that could be used against you.
I highly recommend everyone read this thread and watch this video at the end. Pulling the video out for easy access/in case that link ever gets broken:
by the way twitter, who masturbated over banning trump for weeks, just banned tonnes of Indian twitter accounts that were criticising the BJP government and posting information about the farmers protest, including major independent news organisations which are honestly the only sources of unbiased reporting in this country
so yeah.
and they're not even subtle about why. amazing.
Omfg do u know any ways to help them get their accounts back or to spread the word more??
Start by reading about the protests and the bills.
Some of them are back - last I checked The Caravan India is back.
Report any accounts talking about a “repeat 1984″ - it’s a genocide threat. Two major events during the 1980′s-1990′s (Operation Bluestar & the Oct-Nov pogroms) happened in 1984.
Demand the release of Nodeep Kaur, Mandeep Punia, and any other detained journalists & activists.
Nodeep Kaur is a Dalit Sikh activist who was detained by Haryana police on Jan. 12th, 2021. Her family has confirmed she has been tortured and sexually assaulted in jail.
