People who are good at stuff are not always good at teaching that stuff to others. Often, in fact, as someone becomes an expert at something, they have trouble viewing the first steps from the metaphorical seventh floor landing.

Try reaching a four-year-old to read “cat” or what 2+2 is and you’ll realize that things that you “just do” are actually a series of difficult steps for a beginner. In much the same way, experts “just do” play an instrument, play a sport, solve an equation, or create art.

Some of the worst teachers I ever had were geniuses, but they had trouble getting into the minds of their students, much like the xkcd comic (“silicate chemistry is second nature to us…”). Teaching is a skill; in fact, it’s a dozen skills stacked on top of each other. Thank your local educator today: the current administration continues to underfund education and the current society underappreciates teaching as a skill (and I haven’t even touched on the classroom management, lesson planning, and social skills required by most educators).

I totally get that statement. Looking back to university the most frustrating lectures were by geniuses in their field who weren't even mean or anything, but they were explaining 6D chess to me when I was trying to understand where the chess pieces can move.

On the other hand those that focused on the basics, then one step further, then one step further were much easier to follow and the material was less frustrating to dig into.

And a consequence of this in academia is that people who are good at teaching often get dismissed by their peers and superiors rather than recognized for their skills, especially if they are at all marginalized.

It sounds paradoxical written like that, sure. But how many times have you seen this happen:

1. Marginalized person clearly and concisely explains a difficult concept to a wide audience. Response: Audience thinks the concept is inherently easy to grasp, because they understood it quickly.

2. More privileged person poorly explains a medium- to low-complexity concept to the same audience. Response: Audience thinks the person must be very smart, because the concept seems difficult to grasp.

In both cases, the audience is judging complexity based on how well they understood the concept, but the conclusion they draw about why they understood it is impacted by the social privilege of the speaker. Success is attributed to something outside of the marginalized person; failure is attributed to something outside of the privileged person.

Combine this with the fact that marginalized people are more likely to be teachers and you wind up with a vast devaluation of educational skills.

Funnily enough that tracks 1:1 with those lectures. The "genius" was a man and the person who finally explained it concisely was a woman.

And from what I've heard my male peers always evaluated the female lecturers more harshly, which I can only attribute to misogyny.

everybody leaving tags on my letterboxd roundup like "they didn't do the nobody scene??" we're so fucking past that i need you to catch up. i went into the movie knowing they wouldn't do the nobody scene and frankly i had made peace with it like okay if you don't want odysseus calling himself outis because you don't feel like the joke translates well enough WHATEVER you dont need to film every line of the poem. what i was NOT prepared for is that THEY DON'T SPEAK TO POLYPHEMUS AT ALL. they don't steal a giant wheel of cheese, they don't get him drunk, odysseus doesn't taunt him after their escape, AND he doesn't cry out to poseidon or the other cyclopes on the shore. it's "revealed" that he can speak in the cave before their escape as he prays to poseidon. someone asks odysseus "should we try to reason with him?" and ODYSSEUS says "we're past that." resulting in an adaptation where odysseus does not use wit or trickery to escape polyphemus at all-- which is the case with every single obstacle he meets. this guy does not lie and he does not play tricks. his intelligence is restricted to battlefield tactics, the administration and direction of his men as units. You have to poke polyphemus so he opens his eye before you can stab it! I am very smart. the only point at which he could be described as "tricking" polyphemus is when-- because the movie is allergic to making odysseus look stupid or silly in any way-- they tie straw to their backs to be mistaken for sheep instead of riding the undersides of the sheep, and we are presented with an action sequence of trousered and armored soldiers somersaulting and army crawling under polyphemus' gently dangling hand. which i hate because it is a less clever solution that only works if polyphemus is extremely stupid (shepherd who doesn't know how many sheep he has) -- and more importantly because it removes IMO the most emotionally efficient moment in the odyssey, which is polyphemus talking to the one sheep that's walking slow because it has odysseus on its belly like "oh no are you feeling okay today? you're moving so slow, maybe you're upset because i'm in pain? you're the best sheep in the world and i love all of you my sheeps" like that scene is supposed to instantly retroactively humanize polyphemus and make you realize odysseus has been torturing a person with feelings who basically just wants to be left alone with his pet sheep and it's extremely good at that in every translation i've ever read. but not one of odysseus' enemies are allowed an inch of humanity in this entire adaptation which seems to be a veiled metaphor for the vietnam war so what can you expect. and yes because odysseus never does anything wrong or stupid or silly, OF COURSE he would never reveal his name and allow polyphemus to curse him, and his crew only "believes" that he's been cursed by poseidon thereafter, which removes the ENTIRE MAIN ANTAGONIST of the story and changes the central conflict from man vs. god to man vs. ????

one of the (many) issues with late-stage capitalism is that there is no counterculture anymore, no true underground, or at least true counter culture and the underground no longer have any influence. your punk friend's anarchy patch was made in the same factory and your elderly neighbor's don't tread on me flag.

and this means that essentially ALL satire or anti-establishment media requires you to suspend your disbelief just to accept it as a product. you have to think "yes, this is produced by the corporate overlords in close company with our corrupt government BUT I mean the actors and writers are still artists! they still mean it!" and yes, that's true! but you have to continually ignore that the anti-corporate satire you are watching is produced by fucking Amazon. and that's hard. for me, anyway!
