Akki and Veha's side couple is performing a classic story function - seen for example in many of Shakespeare's comedies - the clown pairing that echoes themes of the main romance in an even more exaggerated form. We really see it in episode 4, as Akki spends the whole episode tormenting and antagonizing Veha, but as soon as Veha shows genuine vulnerability he offers genuine comfort in return. Toto and Kanit get a lot of fun out of bickering and insulting each other, but when Kanit is trying not to cry there's not a quip to be heard: Toto holds his hand and gives him a shoulder.
There's also some great layering and mirroring of the themes around self-worth, as @befuddledcinnamonroll says here. The side couple is more than just another pair to keep viewers interested, they're here to enrich and broaden the story's themes, and it's really well done.
Mel Brooks on taking studio notes:
♪ Why would I regret losing a crappy guy like you? Just why? Who knows where dating you would take my life? A playboy day and night. Cheating when the chance arises. I’m totally fine. Just losing a crappy guy like you ♪
A DOG AND A PLANE (2026) dir. Jojo Tichakorn Phukhaotong
The commodity of witchcraft will convince you you need fancy expensive tools in order to do magic, but it’s not true! especially if you’re a folk witch!!
capitalism is the enemy of witchcraft. you do not need to practice overconsumerism to to well in your practice. defeat the capitalist thinking in your brain.
I am getting increasingly obsessed with the themes around self-worth in A Dog and a Plane. The way we are all socialized with toxic messaging that makes us feel like we can never, ever be good enough, how it prevents us from finding the things that will truly make us happy, and how love is one of the forces strong enough to break through the facade.
Kanit represents the messaging around romantic relationships, and how we are not complete without them - but only if they're "suitable" and have the right status. He's the person who stays in the relationship much longer than they should, and ignores the tells that they are not truly loved, because they view the lack of a successful partner as a personal failing.
Toto represents the messaging around how if you're born poor, and don't fit in with the dominant cultural expectations around achievement and propriety (and, let's face it, light-skin), then you are automatically lesser, and there's nothing you can do about it. He's the person who has a beautiful heart but gets dismissed over and over again because of how he looks and behaves.
Akki is the former golden boy, the high school athlete who was expected to go pro, and when that didn't happen, was relegated to being insignificant. He's the person who others like having around, but forget the moment he's not there anymore.
Veha (who I think got a lot of unfair hate) is the former invisible boy, the one who didn't conform to the cultural beauty standards that determine how valuable we are as people. And once he did conform, it attracted someone who only saw his external worth. He's the person who desperately wants to be seen, so clings to the closest option, regardless of how much it ends up hurting.
It's all so relatable.
I can't wait to see them all love the hell out of one another. Because in the end, that's the ultimate "fuck you" to our stupid societal standards, is to love one another - and ourselves - fully and completely, as we are.
Watching Godji play a canonically trans character who shuts down the mental image of an angry mob protesting against her by reminding herself that nature is on her side just...got to me, okay? 🥺
Hilarious to me that all the criticism of A Dog and A Plane I've seen so far is just "As always, Jojo's characters take some time to grow on you, but it's a promising start". Meanwhile I'm sitting here, instantly enamored by every character
Not to dreg up old discourse but SOME “fans” rage at Wu the series being “bromance” and “not BL” and streamed on Gagaoolala just goes to how little SOME “fans” actually care about the larger queer community. Yes, sure, okay, Wu is not going to have SkyNani passionately kissing each other but it is still undeniably a queer series both in subtext AND in text. Gatekeeping what is considered queer is reductive I think.
Reminder that MLM attraction is not the only way to be queer.
I mean Wu is a mainstream flagship GMMTV series with an important and CANON transgender character in its cast. While many GMMTV series cast the amazingly talented Godji Tachakorn, rarely do they ever let her flex her acting chops AND be canonically transgender at the same time. Do we realize how incredible that is!? That her past transition is both acknowledged by the text and treated as just another facet of life!! Does Fei’s existence not count as queer enough for SOME “fans”? Does transness not count for the queerness quota Gagaoolala should allegedly hold?
I just think SOME “fans” need to take a look in at themselves and recognize their ignorance—whether malicious in intent or not—when it comes to deciding what gets to be a queer series.
I think the whole “queer-baiting” discourse (while completely valid in some cases) has fried a lot of people’s perceptions of intention. GMMTV has proven themselves, for all of their faults, to be an incredibly queer friendly company in (most) respects, and if they and Wu’s team decide that it was queer enough for Gagaoolala, who are we to say that it’s not.
And, frankly, as an aroace person, I think that the queer-platonic relationship between Pete and Niran is made all the more beautiful by its lack of what many would consider “romance”. That is not to say that romantic actions are not beautiful—they are and should be celebrated—but so should other forms of queer love.
I will forever be thankful and happy that we’re at a place in thai QL that a decidedly queer-platonic but still just as passionate partnership like Pete and Niran (SkyNani too) get to exist AND thrive in this market.
WU may not be a BL but it is so intrinsically QUEER.
It's QUEER because it is essentially against capitalism, heteronormativity and patriarchy.
It's QUEER in its systematic subversion of the status quo and in its dismantling of normative binaries, hierarchies and exclusionary structures.
It's QUEER because it's a story about the outcasts, the ones society left behind because they don't fit, because they dared to ask questions, because they dared to challenge the norm.

A Dog and A Plane Ep. 2
gonna start a collection
Man, how long has it been since I saw a romantic comedy with two equally but differently obnoxious leads? A Dog and a Plane is really playing to TayNew's strengths as a pair by making them both the kind of guy that would go full antagonistic flirt mode with a hot stranger who got in their way. I'm having so much fun already.
