taking this panel and headcanoning that watari was like, the uncle who never married and shows up to 1-2 family gatherings a year max, and one day he just rocked up with tween L in tow like 'ah yes i'm fostering him' and everyone had to smile politely and not be like. YOU? WHY???
partly because i think 'L had to go make himself polite at Watari's family gatherings and it was absolutely his worst nightmare and constantly went very wrong' is just, like, conceptually TOO funny to pass up ngl
thinking about this again ive decided this is my firm and true belief. L is on polite yet distant speaking terms with all of Watari's nieces and nephews and they send him christmas cards and ask after him. he calls Watari's very normal sister 'aunt' at her insistence. he does not like any of them very much and they very much treated him as a Sad Troubled Child whenever he was forced to interact with them growing up
