It’s awful honestly. We’ve all done or said ignorant or hurtful things at some point in our lives. The idea that somebody could bring up something we said or did in the past that we’re personally ashamed of today, and use it to vilify us, it a terrifying one.

There’s another reason why “cancelling” somebody over something they said or did years ago that they no longer stand by is awful as well. If a person is condemned for something they did in the past, regardless of how much time has passed, then what motivation do people have to change?

i….dont get this. people do need to be held accountable for harmful things theyve done/ said/ posted and “cancelling” someone or something is a tool to make them realize that their harmful actions have been noticed and arent going to be tolerated. if youre all really so terrified that youre going to be cancelled for something you said a long time ago, u need to either like… delete it… and/or make the necessary amends for your actions. if the person or group you hurt doesn’t want to accept your apology that’s up to them….that’s not “toxic”, it’s protecting themselves. this whole post thread feels really white and also like really… rape apologist-y and a lot of other things and i dont like it…

There’s a difference between holding somebody accountable for their actions, and digging up hurtful things they’ve done or said in the past and drawing attention to it as if it represents who they are in the present.

Like… how in the fuck can you justify digging through somebody’s past to find dirt to use against them in the present? How the hell does that help anybody!?

Also, most people don’t obsessively look through their social media history to find old posts they don’t agree with anymore. 

Also, “rape apologist-y”? Yeah, no, fuck you. Obviously some things can’t be forgiven, and rape is one of those things. That should go without saying. My post was obviously not about rape, for christ’s sake.

White people can also fall on axes of oppression. By nature of being white, you’re not automatically a bigot who claws desperately for excuses for that bigotry. Cancel culture can be weaponised by the alt-right (and already has been, that’s what happened to James Gunn) and is dangerous and motivates people to double down on their toxicity and prejudice. This post was obviously about people saying hurtful, ignorant, and/or offensive shit and how they can learn from it. It was very much NOT about rape and you fucking know it. Don’t use big, weighty terms like rape (or racism) to scare people into agreeing with you. It’s not cool.
