I’ve seen people make the argument that “it’s ok for Rena and Carapace to know each other’s identities because they aren’t as important and Ladybug and Chat Noir” and frankly that doesn’t make any sense?
I feel like everyone is forgetting the basic principle behind a secret identity, and that’s to prevent a villain from being able to target a hero’s civilian life to achieve their goal.
If Hawkmoth were actually competent and not stunted by the writers’ need to preserve the status quo, he would’ve immediately jumped on the chance to use Chloé and extorted any information out of her regarding LB, Chat, the miraculous etc. He could threaten her family, force her to reach out to Ladybug, set up a trap—and just a number of other awful things.
The same is applicable to Alya and Nino. If either of them were exposed, they could easily be manipulated or forced into selling out information and that’s why it’s so dangerous.
This is why these inconsistencies are so frustrating. The writers are making it blantantly obvious they’re just using the identity barrier as a guise to milk the love square schtick. If it was as important as they claim, they wouldn’t have tossed all logic out the window in Queen Wasp when Chloé literally exposed herself in front of Gabriel and all of Paris.
Simultaneously they go against themselves and weirdly blame Marinette for the issue? The entire plot of Syren is the most egregious example.
I honestly thought this same thing myself. I think my other issue with the argument that the writers have set it up believably for that reason is that the writers openly admitted at Japan expo that they don’t want to break the square because it’s the driving force of the show. The drama of them not knowing is literally all they got to keep things interesting for them, so they are going to stretch it out for as long as possible.
Which if they wanted to drag it on believably then they should have made the identity rule apply to everyone. But you lose that when you have Adrien and Marinette knowing who Master Fu is who is arguably more dangerous if discovered than RR, QB, or C. You lose that when Marinette knows who the other three are because she picked them. If you are going to go against your own rules, you have to raise the stakes. You have to show a consequence for it, but instead Chloe has been rewarded for breaking the one rule of Miraculous club. Alya has every right to be pissed that they threw her a party because Alya actually did what she was supposed to, and Chloe not only showed a disregard for her identity but also a lack of respect for being a hero in general.
If canon is willing to celebrate one character blowing her identity to the entire fucking city, then I don’t see a reason why Ladybug and Chat Noir can’t privately tell each other. Especially with all of the knowledge they have now of everyone else.
Thomas argues ‘but what if one of them gets akumatized’ and like okay?? What if Master Fu gets akumatized?? “Hi, Hawkmoth. I’m the guardian. Here are the identities of both Ladybug and Chat Noir, oh and let’s throw in this nice box of 15 other magic jewels while we’re at it.” Can we all just admit that there is no good reason for them to keep the secret anymore other than “because drama,” and that it’s no one’s fault but the writers? Stop treating Marinette like shit just because she doesn’t make goo goo eyes at your fucking cat nerd. Which by the way is the fault of the writers again just fyi.

Another reason to stop ‘cringe culture’
I’m a teacher. Today I was covering for a grade 9 science class. Decent kids, if a bit rowdy, and didn’t want to do their work. Wtv, it was textbook work. Not the point.
1 girl (reminder that these kids are, like, 14/15) was doodling bust portraits (head & shoulders) in an art book. I had a squiz and asked her if they were her characters. She said they were and excitedly told me she had so many characters for this one story of hers. I laughed about how I wished I could draw mine, and moved on.
Later in the class, I hear her enthusiastically telling her friend all about her main OC - a gay kitsune prince with a tragic past. It was so, pure, classic Deviant Art: my first OC. And you know what? I loved it. I was just sitting there half overhearing, smiling to myself and glad that her friend was engaging and interested in her story and characters.
This is a girl who will become a creator. She will draw and write and imagine, get better and better. She’ll probably move past this stage and start making more nuanced characters (she was already lamenting she didn’t have enough girl OCs). But this is where she started. This is where so many of us started. I had a tiger catgirl, goth witch/sorceress OC in high school. I found my original design for her recently. Look what I create now.
Let kids be kids. Let them explore and invent and go wild and be cliche and make overpowered OCs. Let them have their anthropomorphic animal OCs. Let them try everything before they settle into maturity.
For fucks sake; let them have fun.

Important question
Why is there always a discourse in the ML fandom? No, really, why is there always a discourse in the ML fandom? There’s ALWAYS something, no matter what. Is it just because the people in this fandom are too salty or am I missing the point?
I get it, though. There are some things that the fandom is mad about and they’re expressing their anger to others. That’s fine, really. However, does it have to turn to a discourse every time? Do people have to suffer, or get hurt each and every time? The amount of discourses I can name on the top of my head is kind of concerning.
-The Marinette Discourse- still ongoing. Basically, the people who defend Marinette VS the people who blame her for everything.
-The Thomas Astruc Discourse- still ongoing. People being mad at Astruc for being an ass and for his interpretation of his characters VS the people who 100% agree with him (though this one is more understandable than the others)
-The Frozer Discouse- also still ongoing. Basically, everyone going nuts over the most recent episode. Part of the discourse includes people who love VS people who hate Kagami
-Ship Discourse- ?? People who bash every ship that isn’t the lovesquare
-The Chloe Discourse- ongoing. People who defend Chloe with all their heart VS people who are in between VS people who hate her with a burning passion
-The Hiatus Discourse- on hold, at least for now. People complaining how the ML team takes too much time VS the people who don’t think so AND who believe that the wait is reasonable
-The Alya/Nino whitewashing Discourse- Apparently new?? The name is self-explanatory.
-The “Sexist” Discourse- Ongoing. People who think it’s unfair how everyone blames Mari for what she “does” while they defend Adrien for his mistakes. It also includes the fact that people adore Luka more and hate Kagami (not everyone though)
I know there’s more. There are more. But for now, those are the ones I remember. How many is that? Eight. 8, to which 7 are ongoing, about things, that most of them don’t even deserve a discourse. And don’t come and tell me it isn’t cuz let me tell you; they are. The amount of posts and heated arguments about these subjects. The salt, the insults- it’s a lot. I’m not saying people are wrong about being mad- it’s absolutely reasonable in most cases. However, do they have to go out of proportion? Can’t we just argue in a civilized way? I’m sick of seeing people get upset and fight over this. This is not how we’re going to build a healthy fandom. Plus, let’s not forget- in the end, it’s a kids show. Kids are probably watching us argue like that.
I’m just- I’m sick of discourses. People creating drama over every little thing. I see them on my dash; some people get attacked for having different opinions. AND ESPECIALLY ON ANON, WHICH IS WORSE. It’s sickening. I’m honestly scared about tomorrow’s episode- watch closely, someone will point out the most ridiculous shit and another discourse will start.

How to do “extra” facial expressions!
Drawing basic facial expressions is not the hardest. Most people can draw a sad face, a happy face, angry etc., but making more multidimensional expressions is more of a challenge. I have gotten a lot of compliments on how I draw facial expressions, (specifically “angsty ones”) telling me that they are very dramatic and well… expressive! And there are actually only a few things I think about when I draw faces that take them to the next level, so I thought i’d illustrate them all here!
SUPER IMPORTANT TIP BEFORE WE START: Look at your own face when you draw faces. Even making the face when you are drawing (you don’t even have to look at it), will give you some sense of how the face muscles pull and where things fold and stretch, because you can feel it. You are the best reference when it comes to facial expressions!
Angles
Draw the head in an angle that matches the expressions you want to make. It is not a requirement, but is going to add to the effect.
Symmetry vs asymmetry
A face is rarely symmetric. Unless the face the character is making is 100 % relaxed or even dissociating, the eyebrows, mouth and facial muscles will have different placements of their respective side. This image shows the dramatic impact asymmetry has on a face:
That’s the difference between a smile and a smirk!
The first one’s like “oh yeah?” and the second is like “oH YEAH??”
The “balloon squishing principle”
This is something I did subconsciously, and I didn’t know about until I made this tutorial. And this principle goes hand in hand with an asymmetric face. Basically, if you squish one part of the face, you need to even out the empty space by “inflating” the other part of the face so that it doesn’t appear shrunken. The picture hopefully explains it:
Teeth
Don’t forget to add the gum when the mouth is open to its full potential!
Squinting and folding
Adding folds around the eyes when a character is squinting makes a HUGE difference. It makes a smile more genuine and a growl more intimidating. Adding folds to the face in general makes your characters more lifelike and ‘visually relatable’. Like, they look human, and less plastic or fake.

Pupils and irises
The placement of the iris and pupil in relation to the eyelids is very important! The less of the white you see, the more relaxed the character is.
And then of course eyebrows and eyes go hand in hand!
Gestures, spitting, sweating…
Adding more elements than just a face is key to making the character actually look like they are feeling what you want them to feel. Just the tiniest sweat drop adds to their anxiety, spitting adds frustration to their rage, slouching shoulders, waving hands, a double chin, extreme angles, the list goes on! Add whatever and see what kind of impact it makes! Does it do the trick? Great! Add it!
Over exaggeration!!
Remember that you can almost always exaggerate more. Don’t be afraid to do draw “too much” because you’re just experimenting. See what works and what doesn’t. What do you like to exaggerate?
Now that you know some theory, it’s time to practice!

Fill a page with circles and fill them in with different expressions. Try and exaggerate as much as you can!
This is mostly for experimenting. They are quicker to draw than complete faces, but the same rules should apply!
