rocky fully expected to die when he broke out of his ball into an atmosphere his body couldn't withstand to save grace and the ship.

grace fully understood that turning around to save rocky from the taumoeba would be condemning himself to a long death in space.

they both knowingly and willingly sacrificed themselves. they both answered "who would you die for?" with a resounding "each other."

and only because of that did they both survive to their happy endings.

It's also very cute that both of them survived because the other wasn't going to let them die.

Grace fixed his ball and stayed on Rocky's side until he woke up, advancing with their mission and preparing everything for Rocky to take the taumobea to his people. And Rocky did everything eridianly possible to make a home in his planet for Grace.

They are both willing to die for each other, but they wouldn't let the other one do it under any circumstances.

Whatever you do, don't think about how in the book, Rocky was very anxious around oxygen due to it's ability to cause fire (which Eridians can't 'see') after he sort of caught on fire when he saved Grace.

And then, how when Grace went to rescue Rocky after the Taumoeba escaped and ate all the fuel on Blip A and Grace notes about how one side of Rocky's jumpsuit is scorched and two of his arms are burned. Like it would appear that the poor guy had no other options left and had tried to use fire to stop the Taumoeba spreading through his ship and ended up burning himself.

(Also wondering if something backfired on him or it was a case of not being able to see the fire and he just walked into it without realising it)

Grace sends this off as a "fuck you" to Stratt and unintentionally eases 40+ years of crippling guilt.

(40+ factoring in the Hail Mary mission, then the time it would take to get back to Erid and the time it would take for the message to get to Earth. Probably closer to 50+ actually).

(I do think Stratt felt bad. She did a lot of terrible things to save the planet, and obviously felt guilt for sending Grace off. I imagine the time waiting to hear back from the Hail Mary was torture for everyone, but she essentially sent three people off to their deaths, one unwillingly. Hearing that Grace made it out alive would be a huge weight off her shoulders.)
