Sorry Alistair
This Dan Piraro comic always makes me cry.
It's Disability Pride Month, so here's some writing tips from me, a full-time professional author who is disabled and lives with multiple chronic illnesses.
I deal with chronic pain and fatigue, executive dysfunction, brain fog, and mobility issues. I have been a professional author sinve 2021.
1. Write what YOU want to write, not what the world needs or what people say you should write.
You don't owe the world representation or inspiring words on the subject of your pain or disability. Write what moves you and that YOU feel passionate about. You don't have to JUST write about disability.
2. Let daily goals motivate you, not shame or frustrate you
It's great to write or work daily if you can, but if you need a rest day or time to decompress, it's better to let yourself do that than power through and set yourself up for exhaustion, pain, or a flare-up. Give your body grace.
3. Let it take time
When you're disabled, it feels like time is constantly being stolen from you - by your fatigue or accessibility issues, by administrative burden, by the amount of time it takes to communicate things, etc.
Writing will take more time too, and that's okay.
4. Swap Between Projects
If you struggle to focus on one project at a time, it's not cheating or abandonment or undisciplined to swap between multiple drafts and ideas. Let yourself enjoy the process. Let things marinate and come back to them months later. Follow your passion in the moment.
5. Feed the tank
People say that good writers need to read, and sure, if they can, that's great - but "reading" doesn't just mean reading a book. You're engaging with the text from a craftsman's perspective: how did they write it? Why does it work or not work? What can you learn from it?
If you can't focus on text right now or can't hold a book, you can still apply those questions and skills to other media: to videogames, movies, TV, the news, to art, to music. You're taking apart in your head or in conversation, seeing how it works, and taking lessons for yourself.
All of that gives you skills, and should also give you inspiration. Everything doesn't come from nothing in your imagination: you need to fuel that engine with stories, characters, ideas, and feelings that you find inspiring, exciting, and fun.
So apparently I'm honouring Disability Pride Month by having a flare-up. I did NOT want this, especially not on the last several days of my annual leave. Why couldn't I celebrate with a cake? Oh, right, I CAN'T have cake.
I am NOT pleased, universe.

New DA fanfic!
I decided to try and write a detective story set in Thedas. Have I succeeded?
"Nika Kader and the Three-Dwarf Problem" on AO3
Characters: Orlesian Warden Kader, Warden Alistair, Nathaniel Howe, Velanna, Prince-Consort Cousland, Female Tabris, OCs, and a whole cast of other characters
Some tags: character death, violence, discrimination, grief/mourning, chronic illness, science that you'll have to squint at to believe
Summary: After the Hero of Ferelden’s actions in Amaranthine earn Weisshaupt’s ire, Warden-Lieutenant Nika Kader is sent over to investigate the extent of the Prince-Consort's crimes against the Order. But her inquiry is halted when a recruit goes missing just before the Joining ritual, in quite suspicious circumstances no less. Add to that the key witnesses’ unexpected absence, the locals’ dislike of Orlesians, as well as personal drama, and all of Nika’s plans are thrown into disarray. Now the Wardens of Vigil’s Keep have a completely different mystery on their hands – and the threat looms far too close for their liking.

(excerpt)
"I will. Or…I'll try." He laughed ruefully, pulling her back against him and burying his face in her hair. "I'm sorry, I'm more used to giving or taking orders, I'm afraid, so it may take practice. And reminders from you."
"Yes. Both of us have been lone wolves." She breathed in the scent of him, traces of oil and leather and the pine soap they both used now.
Arisha felt Cullen shift so his mouth brushed her ear, and she shivered as he kissed the sensitive tip. "Let me make it up to you?" he whispered.
She chuckled. "Who am I to refuse such a generous offer?" His tongue traced a line that made her shiver and sent a pulse of pleasure straight to her core. Kaffas. He'll have me ready to scream before we even make it to the bed. And he knows exactly what he's doing. She felt his lips twitched in a smile. Probably a smirk. Ass. I think he already knew that our ears are particularly sensitive because he always plays with them. I wonder…well, I can't exactly ask, but for all I know, Sera told him. I can't imagine Charter or that mysterious Solas mentioning it.
Several weeks ago: all right, new story. Let's keep it light this time. Just once. No sad business. No serious drama. NO SAD BUSINESS. No sprawling ten thousand subplots and characters. Just a nice, short little mystery. For fun. Please. Just this once.
Today: all right, the first draft is finally finished. I have over 47K words, I cried 10 times, wrote myself through a cathartic scene on my personal trauma, and added so much drama, sad business, characters, and background plotlines that I'll need a sequel or five to resolve them properly. Time to rewrite 1/5 of dialogue and add that one detail that I included in the first scene and then promptly forgot about. Also, why I have several new documents with 10K worth of random scenes for the sequels, when the fuck did I even write this?
Why am I like this. I actually forgot about this during my several years' break. Send help.
If you are a white person in a racialized person’s life, especially as a partner or close friend, you should go out of your way to ask regularly “hey is there anything you have been holding on to that I did?” and critically both fix it and NOT DO ANYTHING TO PUNISH THEM FOR TELLING YOU.
As a white person raised in a white supremacist society, you’re gonna fuck up sometimes. That’s just a fact. But racialized people often aren’t able/comfortable speaking up when y’all do some shit because of the power imbalance/not feeling up to educating when you may be resistant/don’t think the “fight” will be Worth It.
Show initiative without making it A Struggle or playing the white guilt card. Show you actually care about them, their struggles, and the way you interact with them BEFORE they have to have a bigger Conversation with you, beyond when they need to yell about someone else being racist.
And for fucks sake if they’re making/showing you something from their culture fucking act like you realize the importance of that, that they’re showing you shows they grew up with or making you food they made with their families, that they’re letting you in and trusting you more than other whites in their life.
This would honestly be life changing for me. The idea came up because I feel so incapable of telling the people in my life when they do racist shit. And like furthermore, actually respond beyond just an I'm sorry. Like for the love of god actually internalize the shit the Black and Brown folks say to you.
I'm seeing a lot of tags from white people saying something along the lines of please tell me if I fuck up and like that really goes against the point of the post. Racialized people have to swallow so much racism on a daily basis and it's impossible to tell who is safe to confront.
Even close friends or partners are not necessarily safe. I have had partners dismiss accusations of racism just off hand, I have had partners treat me like a repository for knowledge on Muslim cultural practices despite the fact that *my family has been Christian since Jesus,* hell I have had a partner say I was overplaying my pain at the genocide to get sympathy.
Racialized people are constantly waiting for the other shoe to job. Constantly waiting for their "antiracist" white friend to decide they have learned all they need to. We need you to ask. We need you to care enough to be proactive literally at all. Stop asking us to trust you without doing any fucking work to prove you are trustworthy.
To emphasize
IF YOU ARE WHITE YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE FIRST STEP OR YOU ARE JUST PUTTING MORE LABOR AND DANGER ON YOUR RACIALIZED FRIENDS FOR YOUR FUCKING COMFORT
Fucking reblog this each time you see it so that it gets drilled into other whites heads
Boys, boys, stop. You're both beautiful.
NOW KISS.
Happy disability pride month to everyone with ptsd, happy disability pride month to everyone with complex ptsd, happy disability pride month to everyone who questions if their problems are big enough to count as a disability, happy disability pride month to anyone who questions if their problems count as a physical or mental disability, happy pride month to everyone who has a disability that causes people to stare, and to those whose disabilities are hidden, happy disability pride month to everyone who deals with any kind of disability physical or mental, you’re all badass and I want you to remember that this month okay
man, these healthcare prices are getting ridiculous
This has been my main argument against "AI" from the very beginning.
OpenAI scraped the entire web. All of which had been a labor of love from humans. Wikipedia is the backbone of a lot of LLMs, and that was volunteer human labor. They stole it and now they're selling it back to us.
And worse, they're trying to destroy the free sources that they stole from. It's destruction of human knowledge on an unprecedented scale. The burning of the library of Alexandria has nothing on this.
When people justify using gen AI by talking about how it allows them to do (insert creative hobby) it sends me into a blind rage. The whole point of the creative hobby is to use your brain. Having a machine do it for you defeats the purpose. That’s like saying you’re getting into running marathons then just driving the 42km
It’s wild when you’re disabled and have adapted your entire life to be able to function even a little bit and people will still think you’ve “given up” or “let the illnesses win” because you allow yourself to rest. Grind mindset is garbage.
Anyone else with chronic pain ever get really absorbed in a project and dissociate from your body while you're working but then you finish and you come back to your body and you're just like AAAAAAAHHH! WHAT'S WRONG?? oh yeah. The horrors. Never mind
