I dislike the way that people dance around the oppression of women when it comes to conversations about history. Lots of people acknowledge that women were seen and treated as property, but the horror of that experience is rarely conveyed. When teaching about women's rolls in ancient cultures there is always that comment about women not being able to own property, that they were property themselves, and were expected to be submissive to men. But what does this actually look like?

It looks like rape. Like mothers being seperated from daughters. It looks like being forced to cohabit with and serve an owner who will force himself on you and breed you like stock. It is the sadness of miscarriage and the realisation that your body won't hold up. It's mutilation and violence. It's watching the deaths of your friends knowing that none of them lived a truly happy life. It's watching your daughter grow up knowing that she will be sold into servitude and raped until she dies, the same fate you face. In some cases you didn't even have a name.

Women's oppression is the oldest form of oppression, and yet we are still so strongly gripped by patriarchy that there is a refusal to acknowledge what that actually means. We have barely even started earning our rights in the west, and our sisters still face the terror of what I have described above. Women are always one step away from losing everything, and yet the movement meant to fight for women's liberation is being overun by men and misogynistic women. It's easier for them to uphold the status quo than challenge it.

Women need to learn their history, the grim and horrifying reality of it. The truth of our existence under patriarchy. If we don't seek out this truth, then history is doomed to repeat.

I've been thinking about this lately. When we talk about 'marriage' and 'husbands/wives' in ancient times we gloss over the fact that, most of the time, the reality was actually slavery and owner/property.

Many first-world countries, like some countries in Asia today, also used to routinely kill off baby girls.

Women could not live without marrying males, as they couldn't own property, earn enough to live by themselves, or risked being labelled as a 'witch' and killed for it. Women were either denied divorce, or would lose absolutely everything if divorce was granted or her husband died. How is marriage not talked about as a form of legitimised sexual slavery, both historically and in modern times (you really going to argue that Afghan women aren't sex slaves?)? Its because even now we don't really see women as truly human - and that's how we've ended up where we are now in the west, with males claiming to be women and being taken seriously - its the same mechanism that allows the sexual slavery of women to be invisible, even when we acknowledge how bad women had/have it.

so basically, a big right-wing 78-year-old female politician in the UK, Ann Widdecombe, was brutally murdered in her own home 2 days ago

she was beaten to death by a “white male” who is still at large — clearly a politically motivated attack

yet, every left-wing person on social media is like: “murder is terrible, but let’s not forget she was a cunt with terrible views”

completely overlooking the fact that a male killed a woman with his bare hands — literally beat her to death, which is an incredibly personal and passionate way to kill someone — and that’s about the most conservative and evil thing any human can do

it’s clear why he killed a right-wing woman, and not a right-wing male

also, it’s interesting how many people are willing to overlook a male’s actions (murder) because apparently a woman’s opinions are worse

I think in retrospect one thing that will be historically notable about the 2020s is the use of online smear campaigns against powerful women. Like it’s extremely frightening. So many of them also were quite literally funded by men who were angry about “getting MeTooed” and wanted to ruin a woman’s life the same way.

And this is exactly why men will do anything to stop us from being able to speak, to silence us, to prevent us from using accurate language, to make sure we're never alone together as women, that we're never talking to another woman unsupervised without a male there to watch over us and make sure we're not 'misbehaving'
