i cannot stress this enough. if you are a radfem, you should be volunteering at your local women’s shelter if you have the time and resources. posting online is cool and all because it gives younger women or women who haven’t peaked yet an opportunity to discover and resonate with radical feminism, but if we want to see actual change in real life we’re gonna have to start it. go to a women’s rehab center, donate clothing to a rape shelter, protest if you can. nothing is hopeless if we become the hope in this world

for anyone who isn't aware, wnba players have been speaking out recently about the abuse they've been receiving online from sports betters who bet on them and weren't happy with the outcomes of the games. notably, chelsea gray blasted a guy who called her a racial slur because she didn't score as many points as he bet she would, and courtney williams posted a voice note of her response to a guy who said some absolutely vile stuff to her

i know most of the wnba fans on here are more casual watchers, but it's still something i think everyone who pays attention to the league should be aware of because it's astounding how many comments i've seen saying that the players should just suck it up because that comes with the territory and all athletes have to deal with it. while it's true that this problem is by no means unique to the wnba, that doesn't mean it's okay or that players should have to tolerate harassment and bigotry (i swear every single one of these comments is overtly racist, misogynistic, and/or homophobic)

if the league is going to openly endorse sports betting, partner with betting platforms, and actively promote betting during every single commercial break, then it NEEDS to also take measures to protect its players from the vitriol that betting inspires. personally i think it's incredibly fucked up that sports leagues are endorsing betting at all, but that's a conversation for another day. natasha cloud said it well when she was interviewed about it: if the wnba wants to endorse betting for the sake of financial growth, fine, but that cannot come at the expense of the players, and cathy needs to step up and protect them (in this way and so many more). elizabeth williams (secretary of the players’ association) said that there’s a meeting scheduled to discuss the issue with cathy soon, but i honestly don’t know how much we can expect to come from it

Why is porn the only media category that's allowed to be as offensive as possible?

The level of racism and ableism in a lot of mainstream porn would (rightfully) upset most libfems if it was in any other category of media, but it's somehow okay just because it's porn? Why is porn immune to any criticisms of it's racist / homophobic / misogynistic / ableist content the way no other media category is?

There's a slave category of porn where black women are abused like slaves by white men, or black women are portrayed like savage beasts with no self control, or Asian women are portrayed as docile and submissive to the extreme and fetishized for it, or there's hijab porn specifically fetishizing women who wear a hijab, or or

This would (rightfully) cause a major outcry in any other category of media. "But its just a fantasy!" So is any other category of media that would (rightfully) be criticized for portraying such offensive and bigoted content. Why is porn above such criticism?

As someone who lives in a right wing community and hangs out on websites where it’s not possible to fully escape from seeing right wing rhetoric, men do get mad when norms re: misogyny and racism in media improve somewhat or when feminists and antiracists say they should improve somewhat, and it is almost certainly at least partly because they are accustomed to having a dedicated free-to-air sexual brutalisation channel.

What you’re seeing with left wing men is that they are as misogynistic and racist as men on other parts of the political spectrum but they know they’re supposed to give a shit about equality so while right wing men just straight up say “I can’t believe Netflix took down this show where much of the comedy relies on blackface and brownface; these liberal snowflakes are ruining entertainment!” left wing men react to feminist criticisms of rape scenes with “oh so you think survivors shouldn’t be represented in media?!
