Why would polygamy be forbidden in a world like Diablo without misogyny or other bigotry we associate with the modern day church, and can we actually have it be a problem? Well, yes, because of the reasons polygamy became taboo in many parts of the world even before Christianity:

If one person has multiple partners because of their status, power or even just looks and charisma, there is a lot of people who will end up without a partner. These people will have many reasons to want those on the top dead more than usual, and that is bad for the group. To maintain peace, you tell everyone they are only allowed to pick one partner at a time.

Inheritance - if there are multiple partners and some or all have children, those children compete for the inheritance. And when resources become scarce (which happens all the time in Sanctuary) there is a high chance the partners will start fighting each other to secure a better life for their child.

An extension to the 2nd reason is if multiple people get together in marriage from different families, the families might use their child as means to enter proxy wars with others. All of this creates chaos and higher chance of people killing each other (as if they needed more excuse).

So all of these reasons why polygamy was taboo, or at least was not officially recognized with marriage in our history, can work without having to resort to misogyny or other forms of bigotry. It could be that saying people are only allowed to marry one person at a time will stop people from wanting to marry the richest or most well off person in a world where resources are scarce.

idk man sometimes i like it when video game writers are allowed to plan a series of events that happen in a specific order and affect each other in turn to become an overarching narrative, and i don’t mind trusting those writers to take me through those events in the order that is emotionally effective. i don’t really care if a game forces me to go through the forest area first before i can attempt the icy area because maybe there’s things that happen in the forest area that inform later scenes in the icy area. maybe we don't need more superficial player choice open world concepts if it comes at the cost of the ability to write a story with actual significant plot events and character development in each section
