When I'm given the liberty to choose I tend to bounce around and skim most of them so you can preview which particular heartbreak appeals to you.
Ghouls Mourning MC
I mean, we all saw how devastated Luca was over losing someone close. He and Kaito may be the Chaos Combo, but you're their wrangler, their handler, their eye of the storm, and without you they would immediately spiral and be more destructive, not just to everyone around them but themselves.
Jin would just. Turn into that caveman they found in ice. Totally frozen, never comes out of his room. They'll find him in 100,000 years in the same slumped over position he was in when he learned you died. Its joever. You were his chance to reclaim something he lost, to thaw his heart and that last source of warmth in his life was gone and he just gives tf up.
Tohma is less personally devastated, but he is shell shocked. He goes through the motions, sees to his routines with a need to keep himself busy before he reflects on what he lost and feels hopeless.
Alan feels a loss he hasn't felt since he lost his father. This doesn't come close to that, but it's a kick to the ribs when he's already down. Also shell shocked, also more reclusive after you're gone. You were so soft and sweet to him, tiny and precious and he was helpless when this cruel world decided to snuff you out.
Sho and Leo act out to hide their sadness. They act like it's no big deal, death comes for us all, but they lie awake at night and just feel sick. They wanted more time with you, they should have been better to you. Regrets swirl into full blown depression that they try to hide but they're noticeably shorter-tempered with everyone, quick to start fights. Sho's no longer pulling punches in the Pit, he wants to feel his knuckles split if only to distract this pain in his chest he doesn't know how to deal with.
It's always raining in Jabberwock. Always. Towa is devastated. The safari has been closed for weeks, the enclosures are muddy, and Haru is just watching everything fall apart and he was running on fumes before that. Ren has given up as well. He pretends he's grateful the safari is finally doomed so he doesn't have to work, but he refuses to admit he hates it. This isn't what he wanted. He just wanted free time. Now everyone is as miserable as he is.
Taiga and Romeo are angrier. They come to blows frequently, and Ritsu can barely ever rein them in. Taiga doesn't even know what's missing, he just knows something's wrong. Something's gone. Romeo doesn't want to give you credit for bringing the order you did, he's just cursing you for leaving.
Hotarubi is as melancholy as Jabberwock. It rained before but that always made the dorm more peaceful. Now they feel like they're drowning. Subaru and Haku stop eating and sleep poorly. When they do sleep, they dream of you being angry with them for not saving them, or of you dying again in front of them when the air feels like water and they can never reach you in time. Haku visits the chapel often, searching for your ghost because he wants to see you one more time. Tell you he's sorry, tell you he still cares about you. Zenji will keep you company, happily show you how to move around as a ghost. But you never show up. Even people not sensitive enough to see ghosts in Hotarubi can hear Zenji drifting along the halls, sobbing at night.
Ed feels your absence, wishes it had been differently, and remarks some romantic babble about your being a flower plucked too soon that makes Rui and Lyca angry. The two of them hole up in their rooms and struggle to deal with the loss.
Yuri and Jiro feel the failure of not being able to save you. The curse, the accident, your injuries. They obsess over it until it makes them sick, losing too much sleep, making dangerous mistakes. It's a setback for their research and a hit to their confidence.
Jo and Elias talk about you without saying your name. It feels like sacrilege to speak of so soon, but they're trying to discuss happy memories that all taste bittersweet. You're the only nameless 'her' they refer to. Mio throws himself into fixing the chapel, as if it meant he didn't put off your needs and disappoint you. He won't admit it, but he does it as a way of feeling like you're close to him. He'll nap in the chapel and swear he can feel you drifting by. Shion is mad you left him. You got away and you'll never come back. He scrounges for traces of you, collecting the things you left behind and there's a shrine to you in his closet. It has your notebooks, your personal journal, printed pictures from your phone, some worn clothes (and it will crush him when they lose your scent), your perfumes. Anything he can squirrel away. He even tries to dig you up, but Elias stops him.
The ones that hit me the hardest are Towa, Haku and Zenji. I've literally brought myself to tears multiple times thinking of them T^T

I'm reading through Jins home screen voicelines and he undoubtedly mentions the mc in just about everyone?? She has him absolutely wrapped around her finger. If she ever wanted to take advantage of him, it wouldn't be too hard despite his suspicion. Most of the other characters reveal way more tidbits about themselves or other various things. Nope, Jins world revolves around you the moment you show up. No wonder betrayal cuts him so deep π once he's in it, he's neck deep

tarot cards!! i will say i have friends that are MUCH more educated in this than i but hey i have them plus duck duck go at my fingertips, i'm unstoppable. let's get into it
tarot initially started in the 1400s in italy as a card game and quickly spread around europe in the following centuries. it wasn't until the 18th century in france that an occult group began using them as divination and applying meanings that we commonly see today. the basic interpretation follows the fool along his journey of growth and self discovery. the decks are comprised of major and minor arcana cards, and while the suits will vary depending on the customization of the deck, the most common four suits are wands, cups, pentacles, and swords.
decks, especially the ones used for cartomancy (divination), are often customized, so we'll be going with the classic and common interpretation. also! let's go in arcana order!
kaito - the fool
loooooooove love love kaito being the fool. soo good. much metaphor. the fool is the beginning point of the tarot deck, and he's a fool because he's naive; it's the hero at the beginning of his journey, setting off into the world for the first time and growing along the way.
keywords for the fool in the upright position (this will be important later) : beginnings, innocence, originality, adventure, spontaniety.
the fool is starting out on his journey, bright eyed and bushy tailed and full of wonder. in the original cards, the fool was usually walking toward a cliff and being barked at by a dog as a warning. these were mainly like a "hey you're starting out on this journey, watch out for danger," and a warning that if you weren't prepared before starting on this journey, you'd get fucked up. or like, some minor inconveniences at least. the fool coming up in a reading is to inspire courage, to face each day as a new adventure and know that countless possibilities lie ahead.
he's also holding a white rose, which as stated in my other posts, represents innocence, purity, and also remembrance.
like i said, obSESSED that this is kaito's card. since we've learned more about his past and him (a mysterious pendant, a hardass badass grandma, him using his BOW) i think this card fits really well. this journey to darkwick was a new chapter for him, a chance to start over, and he has no idea what's coming his way.
towa - the lovers
i'm like 95% sure those are chrysallis pods behind towa. transformation??? what's he turning into π the colorful beads are an interesting choice. if anyone knows exactly what those are hmu
keywords for the lovers upright: balance, unity, relationships, choices, and unions.
the lovers is a card that yes, can represent love and perfect relationships and attraction, but it can also represent unions and agreements and having to make a choice. the original tarot card design was a couple holding hands while an angel above them blesses them and their union. it's said that this is the angel raphael who works with the winds.
towa, while an aries, also tends to work with the winds. interesting, that.
the card can also represent that a choice must be made soon, to a committment. the card is questioning committment, and how willing you are to sacrifice something for that choice.
towa is suuuuch an interesting character. he loves love and follows his heart in every decision, so it makes sense that he gets the lovers. whether he's one of the people in the couple or the angel blessing it, i have a feeling he's going to be involved in whatever choice we make either way.

lucas - the chariot
luca my son ilysm. also look at those sphinxes behind him!! these are specifically egyptian sphinxes, so i'm going with that interpretation: typically sphinxes in egyptian mythology are benevolent guardians, usually associated with pharoahs. there's two of them, so perhaps representing him and his brother? also could be a reference to the initial depiction of the card, which had a chariot being pulled by two black and white sphinxes
the chariot upright keywords: success, ambition, willpower, self-discipline, and focus.

the chariot is a card that is all about gaining control over your situation and moving forward with focus. it encourages you to build structured plans and to find balance between order and chaos to move forward with courage. it also represents the need to use aggression, a natural human reaction, to achieve your goals, but to also make sure you rein it in so it doesn't get out of control.
this is so luca. balancing impulses, finding the determination to move forward with control--he's so goal oriented and focused on what he wants. we love a man with ambition.
alan - strength

strength is a card that was originally depicted as a woman holding the jaws of a lion. she is calm in the face of danger, and holds an inner strength to withstand any challenges that may come her way. she also represents compassion in the face of adversity. the lion also represents courage, and by the woman holding the lion's jaws, shows that she's keeping the courage in control so that it does not become recklessness.
forgive me if i start crying over alan but boy howdy does this card fit him well. he's done so much to move forward with courage and never backs down from what needs to be done--but he doesn't charge forward recklessly. he makes calm, measured moves, but will not shy away if it seems difficult. also, i'd argue he's one of the only ghouls who's actually compassionate towards us. he lets us go forward and try to do what we can, and then he'll step in and help where we falter. also the head ruffling. love him so much dude

rui - death
i am losing my mind over the fact that our curse twin is the only one (so far) whose card is in reverse. typically, the death card is a chance at letting go, but reversed....yikes dude. also, he's got his purple roses and the skeleton with him again. his background is blank up top. i'm screaming. can you hear me screaming? because i'm screaming.
purple roses, as said in a couple other posts, are mainly representative of magic and enchantment and love at first sight, but also mystery. RUI ugh
death reversed keywords: fear of change, stagnancy, resisting change, decay.
SO interesting. rui was trying so hard at the beginning to get rid of his curse--has he given up? has he just accepted this now? is that why he retreated to obscuary, to fade away? i'll cry fr
death as a card is one that's a little intimidating to pull but genuinely had good meanings to listen to. it was historically depicted as a skeleton on a white horse over both a king and a pauper, showing that death cannot be stopped and that death does not discriminate. so singing hamilton in the notes. death will continue forward, and to resist change is to resist life itself. as an upright card, it was a sign that great change was coming, and you had to embrace the unknown and continue on. as a reversed card, however, it's saying that change is being resisted. either it's fear of the unknown or something else holding you back, and so death reversed is coming as a warning: it's okay to be afraid, but to remain in place is to stagnate and decay.
this is such an interesting card outside of the whole reaper and death correlations. rui does absolutely give me the vibe of someone who tried so hard for so long that he just gave up and is now just wasting his time forever. in his flower meaning card, he had yellow carnation, which was a symbol of regret and remorse.

lyca - page of wands
my other son ugh i love this lil guy. the lizard behind him is super cute. i'm fairly sure it's a salamander because wands are the suit of fire and salamanders are mythologically associated with fire. the suit of wands is associated with creativity, energy, and willpower, all of which are very much lyca.

this card is so cute for lyca. it pictures a young man in a barren landscape at the beginning of his transformation. this card is all about proving to the world you're here for a reason and that your ideas CAN be achieved. following your path with courage will lead you to the outcome you've always dreamed of.

subaru - king of cups
once again we see the element of the suit being reflected in the art. cups are the element of water, and the theme of the suit is emotions, intuition, feelings, and relationships.

anyways the king of cups is a card that represents balance and well thought out choices. this card is a sign to use both your head and your heart to guide yourself, and is a steady, reliable guide to lean on when making decisions. the original card depiction has a balance of both the material and the emotional world and symbolizes that you should look at both.
this is absolutely how subaru portrays himself. as i kind of mentioned in the traitor post, i think subaru has some sort of extreme anxiety about his image and how hes portrayed, and i think genuinely he wants to be seen as someone who IS that calm, cool, collected senpai that can be depended upon to act rationally.
i do think it's interesting to point out that when this card is in reverse, it represents irrational actions and decisions, and i feel like we got a little hint of that with the very last scene with subaru under the tree. and the rumor about his past. maybe. potentially. idk i still don't have a solid feel for it just because of how little we know smh
ritsu - knight of pentacles
last but certainly not least is ritsu!! love this lil freak. pentacles as a suit are about money, yes, but also about worldly possessions of all kinds. their inverse meanings typically have to do with greed and the like.
the knight of pentacles keywords: practical, reliable, hard working, patient, conservative
such a ritsu card right off the bat. the knight of pentacles is a card that when drawn represents long term goals being accomplished by the small daily tasks. it's a knight that's very focused and driven on the present, willing to work through the minutae because he sees that his future will be set thanks to what he's done today
ritsu is someone who is INCREDIBLY hardworking and dedicated, and you can see it in just about everything he does. we're introduced to his long term goal right off the bat and see him taking the steps he needs to every time he's on screen.

BEFORE YALL GET CRAZY the devil does not mean evil!! just like the death card it's not inherently bad. no tarot cards are naturally good nor bad, and the devil is the same way. the cards are typically warnings and signs to look at so you can help yourself

funny as FUCK that he's the devil and i have been LAUGHING ever since i saw this
so the devil (upright) typically symbolizes, opulance, a struggle for power, helplessness, and a dependency on material goods. we've got a lot of the og tarot design in here as well with the grapes and the wings. the grapes symbolized the materialism one was dependent on while the wings belonged to the devil, who was the stronger power you were helpless against.
pulling the devil upright (depending on the meanings) usually meant that there was some sort of helplessness that you were trying to overcome. it also means that there's this need for materialism or luxury that you can't quite shake, and you're lacking the willpower to change these habits and not keep following impulses and desires.

like i said in another post, the suit of cups is all about emotion. typically this suit comes up during times where its important to listen to your emotions, when big feelings are happening, or you're having trouble listening to your inner voice. it also represents creativity and imagination, and zenji is SUCH a cups guy
the knight of cups is very in tune with their emotion and intuition, and the knights are said to be the messengers. the knight of cups brings the message that something of great emotional value will be appearing to you soon. the knight can also be a mediator and represent that you should take the time to learn others emotions as well
the knight will always listen to his heart, and is charged with bringing his talent (emotions) out into the world :') follow your dreams baby!!
the artwork here doesn't match up with the traditional tarot drawing, which shows a knight walking calmly on his horse, delivering a cup to his target. it represents serenity and calm, but i can still see those themes here. we've got a peaceful landscape behind him, and idk about you guys but i always feel more calm when zenji's around

haku kusanagi - the hierophant (upright)
i'll keep this unbiased but there WILL be my opinionated ramblings below you have been warned
the hierophant is the masculine equivalent to the high priestess in the tarot deck, sometimes being called the high priest or even the pope. traditionally, the card is depicted of a religious leader in proper vestaments and holding a hand up benevolently (usually said performing an act of benediction, a blessing at the end of a service) and the other holding a cross or a staff (representing their institution and position of power within the institution). the two pillars in the background are often in the traditional card as well. however, the hand that is typically raised in blessing is in haku's pocket, and instead of a cross or a staff, haku is holding two keys.
christian associations aside, the card represents a strong tie to structured systems put in place and following that path to knowledge. the card appearing upright in a reading shows you embracing the conventional in order to solve a problem, turning away from the taboo. it indicates that following the preestablished order and rules will be the way to move forward.
literally, we've seen haku referred to as a priest, and we know his family has ties to a shrine. he also works closely with darkwick, and told us himself that darkwick sends him to clean up after the other ghouls. we saw this super early on with taiga and then with mc and rui, where haku routinely enforces rule following. this card almost literally shows his role at the school: a priest held in high regard who encourages others to follow established boundaries.
this is LITERALLY him lmao he's the hierophant. yet again another spot on tarot card. give whoever assigned these a raise
NOW ONTO MY PERSONAL BABBLING
If we're looking at this from the haku traitor angle, i think this leans even more into the unwilling snitch. we've seen how regretful he is sometimes and we see him describe himself as lazy and searching for the easiest way out. the easiest way would be to side with those in power: darkwick and the institute. it's super easy, haku, work for us and tell us what you know and you'll be someone we can rely on. we see it in books and movies all the time; flip traitor and i'll put you in a position of power once i win.
haku got that seat. he's comfortably well regarded enough that he can go to them with requests. he can strike deals. he can ask for things and get them. in exchange, they send him to "clean up" and make sure the rest of the ghouls will continue to fall in line.
it is SUCH an interesting design choice that the hand that's typically raised in an act of blessing on this card is instead in his pocket. he's not blessing anyone, and he holds the keys.

like i mentioned in ren's post, the suit of wands is all about willpower and drive. this suit is the most associated with action and ambition and it's the perfect place for our favorite doctor to be! yuri's goals have been at the forefront of everything since he was introduced and it's the perfect suit for him
i don't think yall understand how excited i was when i saw that they gave yuri the seven of wands. this was the perfect time to release it, too, especially after the yuri tohma interaction we got in episode 19
the seven of wands is a card about protecting your territory and standing up for yourself. in the original card art we see a man on top of a hill (in mismatched shoes to represent uneven ground) defending himself from attackers below. unfortunately we can't see yuri's shoes but we do see the staff he's wielding wrapped in vines, ready to take us on.
the card is about the struggle it takes it to get to your position, but more than that, it represents the fight to keep that position. you've fought your way up to get here, and now you've got to keep fighting to stay ahead of everyone else. it's about holding your ground and staying firm to ensure your success, and meeting those challenges head on.
like i said this is such a good card to get right after we saw that conversation with tohma. yuri didn't let him get to him (for the most part, that we saw) and instead snapped back and went about his business. yuri has been proving every single day since he left frostheim that he's the best and everyone should know it, and this card just shows that he's on top of that hill now. anyone is welcome to try and take it from him
