About me: I'm an introject of Dr. Chase from House, if that wasn't obvious. Doubles of any House MD character interact with caution. I'm relatively source connected despite being transgender but please don't send asks about anything that happened in-source after season three, I won't answer them and it makes me uncomfortable. I'm happy to talk about anything pre-S4 in the show.

I mostly reblog medical stuff and whatever else I find interesting. I have a big special interest in medicine and especially psychology but all aspects of medicine are interesting to me. I love talking about it if anyone ever wants to chat. I also reblog House stuff on occasion because. Yeah.

the psych industry and society as a whole is not normal at all towards people who self-harm. people view it as attention-seeking. mental health professionals view it as justification to send you to a “higher level of care” aka incarcerate you. it is seen as a bad/negative behavior that needs to be fixed.

in reality, the concept of self-harm is heavily socially constructed and an issue of bodily autonomy. as humans, we seek out physical pain all the time. we eat spicy foods. we get tattoos and piercings. we engage in BDSM. so why do we forbid self-regulation through pain?

when people are told to cover up their scars, when people are kicked out of DBT support groups for self-harming, when people are conditioned to lie about their self-harm to avoid getting sent to the psych ward, you are telling them that their body is not their own.

the last time i cut myself was roughly a year ago. ironically, after adopting a bodily autonomy mindset around self-harm, i stopped having urges to cut nearly as often because i’m no longer engaging in a power struggle with my own mind over trying to avoid doing a “bad” behavior. i don’t feel like doing it today, but if i do tomorrow, that is okay. because it is my choice to decide what i do with my own body.

Neurogenic bladder (information)

I don’t see much about conditions effecting the urinary tract so i thought i’d make my own.

The basics: neurogenic bladder (aka; neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction) is a broad term for bladder and lower urinary tract dysfunction caused by neurological disorders

Types: there is 3 types of neurogenic bladder; overactive, under active, and mixed type

Overactive: a hyper active bladder, it will have involuntary contractions

Under active: a bladder that is not active enough and doesn’t contract enough and when needed

Mixed type: a mix of symptoms and features of both under active and over active bladder

Symptoms (not a full list)

Overactive bladder

Urinary hesitancy (difficulty urinating)

Urinary incontinence

Frequency

Urgency

Under-active bladder

Urinary retention

Urinary hesitancy

Overflow incontinence

Not being able to tell you have a full bladder

Causes: neurological disorders (a few examples; spina bifidia, stroke, CNS tumors, Parkinson’s, and much more)

Stigma: theres a lot of stigma around urinary disorders and disabilities. Many with them are scared to talk about them. It’s often seen as “gross” and “unsanitary”. Those of us with urinary issues often get shut down in conversations even in disability spaces because people think our disorders and symptoms are taboo and shouldn’t be talked about. All of this not only makes it hard to live with by constantly hearing part of your daily life called gross and unsanitary, but it makes people afraid to talk about it, including to doctors, when they really need to.

I dont hate my therapist but therapy isn't helpful for me, or at least it hasn't been. I have to tell her about the fight with my mom today and I'm not excited for that. Also my therapist SUCKS at patient confidentiality so yay.

And strangely enough, you can't have all that without repeated childhood trauma.

as pride month is wrapping up, I really wanna talk quickly about how LGBTQ+ disabled people are excluded from pride.

despite literally being a community comprised entirely of some of the most historically (and in a lot of instances, presently) discriminated-against groups on the planet, a lot of queer people seem to just shit on disabled people at every chance they get— and that’s if they even remember that we exist.

it’s just baffling to me that a group of people who preach inclusivity and acceptance are some of the least accepting people out there when it comes to accessibility at events. there is no consideration for us when planning events. if they even remember that they’re supposed to be making the space accessible and inclusive, they do the bare minimum while going around saying they’re saints for doing so.

wanna go to a parade? okay, why don’t you go stand in 90+ degree heat for 7 hours with no access to water in that entire time. wanna go to this cool pop-up event? oops, there’s no wheelchair paths, and everyone is going to be blocking your way anyway. sure, we’ll hold an indoor event, but there’s no air conditioning, you’re not allowed to use the bathrooms, and absolutely no one is masking despite there being hundreds of people crammed into a singular venue. and yes, we will be deploying strobe lights at random intervals.

the general attitude is just: “why are you even here if you’re disabled? you should be locked up in your house never interacting with the rest of us, because it’s too much of an inconvenience to accommodate you.” either that, or: “huh? oh I forgot you guys existed. ummm… well at least the stairs aren’t too steep, and you can buy a $20 water bottle if you need it!” like come on. do better.

there's never enough money each month. there's always an unexpected illness. new symptoms pop up or old symptoms flare up. meds have to be managed always and refilled constantly and any refill has the opportunity to go wrong. any regular care has the opportunity to go wrong. any mistake can send your health spiralling. it's always "i just need to get through this bad patch" but as soon as one ends another begins. another crisis begins in the middle of the last crisis. managing one thing leaves another thing to be neglected until that becomes a major issue and has to be managed asap and the cycle starts anew over and over and over

Another fun fact! Even checking your notifications quickly at night can disrupt sleep significantly by suppressing the release of melatonin and spiking cortisol. Making a habit of checking your phone at night can further this and cause sleep to become fragmented over time. So texting people late at night is not good for either party involved! Especially when you factor in things like work and school.
