Burnout whump my beloved; make your character physically and mentally exhausted from a cycle they can't escape. Bury your whumpee in so much stress and pressure they don't realize they're Not Okay until they're on the brink of a nervous breakdown. Give them literal illness from the idea of having to do it again tomorrow! Take away their ability to cope and self-regulate! Give them existential, resigned hopelessness at the neverending exhaustion and malaise!
Most importantly, make sure they feel so ashamed they refuse to rest or tell anyone. This ensures that eventually, they'll crash and burn so hard everyone will realize how bad it's gotten, maximizing hurt/comfort potential.
I'm so incredibly burnt out that I'm putting it to use, at least. I feel ill.
Whump Prompt #1754
Your character is forced to go on the next mission despite barely recovering from the last one.
This could be them being shipped off with a dangerously high fever; with fresh surgical stitches or a cast on their arm. Maybe they didn't even get the time to mentally decompress from the last mission before they're off seeing The Horrors again.
when an already injured character gets tossed like a ragdoll into their buddy by some violent force/explosion/magic/collision (pick your poison) and they both go down hard. the shredded and bruised elbows and knees don’t matter, nothing else matters because they have their friend back… except their friend hasn’t moved or talked or made a sound, limp in their arms. so they roll them over in their lap and sure enough they’re passed the fuck out. hey. no, no, no, no. the pleading spills out of them as their hands scurry over the slack planes of their friend’s face, but no matter how much they shake them, or call their name, they remain ashen and bloody, their breathing shaky and stuttering, there but barely, dead to the world for now. stay with me. they pull them close. please stay with me.
I love me a Whumpee who has responsibilities
After the whump, they can't just recover, no, they have things to do. People who need them. Duties that no one else will do.
There's no time for recovery. They need to lead. They need to keep going.
They can't let everyone down, can they?
when whumpee really wants a hug for comfort but is in too much physical pain to tolerate even the lightest of touch
Whumpee is being tortured in front of Caretaker, with Caretaker restrained in the corner of the room. Caretaker knows Whumper wants them to beg them to stop, so out of defiance they don't.
After a while, Caretaker starts to get restless, but they won't cave in. The thing that finally breaks them is when they make eye contact with Whumpee. With that moment, all of Caretaker's walls came crashing down.
Whumpee was looking at Caretaker with an expression between hope and fear. They wanted- no, they needed Caretaker to save them. They were being tortured for god's sake and Caretaker was just sitting there letting it happen.
The moment Caretaker started begging, Whumper paused and smiled at them. "Aww, Caretaker, if you wanted me to stop, you should've just asked!" Then they left the room, leaving Whumpee and Caretaker alone, along with Caretaker's guilt.
Feel free to add onto any of my prompts!
“Can you remember anything?”
“…I don’t want to.”
Whumpee thinks they're going to get hurt, but makes no move to shield themselves.
In the aftermath, caretaker is somewhat concerned.
Whumpee who cries out in fear in a dream = good, good
Whumpee who apologizes in a dream = Even better
Think about it for a moment. Whumpee asleep beside Caretaker, perhaps in the same bed. Caretaker wakes to the sound of some kind of dry, hiccoughing sobbing. They turn towards Whumpee and find them trapped in a restless sleep, face pale and contorted.
“…’m sorry,…” Whumpee slurs, sleep sticking to their voice.
And who are they apologizing to?
Whumper? “I’m sorry, don’t hurt me, I’ll be better?”
Or Caretaker? “I’m sorry, don’t leave me, I’m worth saving?”
"Not again, not again. Please, not again..."
i’m a sucker for emotional/behavioural changes because of blood loss or drugging or fever or what have you and a fun version of that i’ve been working with lately is ‘whumpee who is an exceedingly competent, lethally dangerous fighter who is just out of it enough to be extremely risky to approach god forbid touch but with it enough to recognize a specific trusted person or a small number of trusted people.’
where caretaker is out of their depth and not really cut out for this but they’re the only one who can safely get physically close enough to help. maybe they’re on their own maybe being guided by a medic or doctor but regardless, they’re who whumpee has. they’re who whumpee recognizes, trusts. it’s got to be them who does the very direct care.
one thing i love in whump is... implications. when the damage isn't immediately obvious but it's easy to put the clues together if you're paying attention.
bruises in particular shapes. certain types of injuries. offhand comments that add up. odd periods of not being reachable, someone goes out of contact for a few days and comes back moving strangely, stiffly, like they're- like they're hurt. a new traumatic reaction, a new fear, a new trigger that came out of nowhere.
something happened. something has happened and anyone paying attention knows it. and anyone paying attention for longer than a moment, anyone who truly knows them, can probably figure out what.
the sweet spot between a whumpee being drugged into unconsciousness and being fully aware is so good. like they're aware of what's happening to them but can do nothing to stop what's happening to them because of the drugs. they're not really processing it like a clear-headed person would. they're not putting meaning to sensation, its just sensation and raw fear. drugs take away both their physical and mental defenses.
