Georgia’s improving finances are giving state officials the chance to undertake the largest remake of the Capitol Hill grounds since Jimmy Carter was president in the late 1970s.
After opening the new South Parking Deck, the Georgia Building Authority is now overseeing a plan to tear down the aging parking deck east of the Capitol building and turn it into a public plaza large enough to accommodate over 3,000 visitors. The plan includes relocating the Liberty Bell and the Statue of Liberty replicas currently on the Capitol grounds to prominent locations in the new Plaza.

As construction begins on the new plaza, many question the effect of this new downtown park. Its main function is to provide a new space for 1st amendment rights for protestors as well as provide an outside area for employees of the state to enjoy their lunch break. This park, which is to replace the parking deck on the back side of the capital building, has already received some criticism in the recent weeks. What are the feelings of the architect's, planners and designers of the new park and master plan? What is the feelings toward the park and its location to the community members and frequenters of the area? How do individual and group activist feel about the proposed design? And what do the congressmen and state employees feel about the new space? These and many other questions are the topic of discourse, and the hope is that together, a community of Atlantans, will strive to answer them.
