I actually recommend everyone write for a rarepair once because it completely changes your relationship with fandom. Engagement stops being numbers and starts being names. You know who's going to show up. You recognize usernames. Someone disappears for a while and then comes back and you're like “OH MY GOD WELCOME HOME.” It's incredibly wholesome. It is also deeply inconvenient when all six of you simultaneously get writer's block-

fiction can be really dangerous there might be a deeply tragic woman in there who starts living in your head forever
to be clear, I believe younger artists and minors can write good fics (not to say “fanfic must always be good” either because it is a hobby and I still believe that as long as it’s done with love and the artist’s joy, it is good) and I believe it’s good when younger artists and minors start making art at young ages.
that said, a lot of fanfics out there that you read and love are done by adults with kids, jobs and responsibilities. adults who have years, decades of practice under their belts. adults who don’t let life and responsibilities take away their joy in creating.
someone’s love and passion don’t suddenly go away the second they reach a certain age. so if anything, I feel sorry for people who say “adults shouldn’t write fanfics or make fan art” because what these people really say is that they expect themselves to stop having fun and finding comfort in things that bring them joy and comfort the second they reach a certain age. it’s sad that they put an expiration date on their own fun and source of comfort.
You will pry my million word fanfic series out of my cold dead hands I don’t care what number mh age starts with
If you're a new writer and you're asking yourself "is this too personal, is this too much, will people think this is weird" that feeling is the exact location of your actual voice. The stuff that makes you want to close the laptop is the stuff nobody else could write. The safe version is always worse. Always. I have never once read something and thought "this would have been better if it was a little less honest." go further. It's always go further.
Genuinely. Go as far as you think you can, and then listen to the part of your brain that knows you can, in fact, push it further.
I want Ryoumarx where Xander invites Ryoma to tea and Ryoma is horrified because what the hell is this. This is not tea. What are you trying to pull, Prince of Nohr. Why are yOU PUTTING MILK IN IT
Ryoma gets to try coffee for the first time and he’s freaking out because. What the hell. This is bitter as frick. Is this poison, am I gonna die??? Then he’s wide awake now because the caffeine is on his veins and now he’s all. What is this fantastic elixir…….
Ryland Grace and his popularity as a character feels like such an important step in repairing the cultural tsunami left by the long running trope of every genius character needing to be an insufferable asshole to everyone in a ten mile radios about it.
Conversely, Eva Stratt is doing wonders for repairing and inspiring a appreciation for commanding women with dubious moral convictions who are fully willing to bend laws for the greater good without hesitation.
And together they are doing brilliant things by not kissing or hooking up even once.
honestly one of my favorite things about fanfic is when you can see the canon influences come out in really subtle ways. like a canon line thats mentioned once as a throwaway is suddenly the entire premise for a fic or it influences the characterization or something. its just so cool to see how people weave their ideas around a source material, especially if its not a detail i'd thought about before
this is why I write fanfic!!!! i wanna make the easter eggs!!!
They could never make me hate you, complex female character whose reaction to trauma was not pretty and digestible like how people think it should be.
This will never stop being funny to me I don't think
We used paper cutouts glued to toothpicks and stabbed into erasers, but I like this idea better.
For a college game, I used an entire box of candy canes as a size colossal monstrous zombie grasshopper, and then when it died I ripped the box open and used the candy canes as size large monstrous parasitic horsehair worms erupting from its corpse. Nobody actually wanted to eat them after that so I took them home and ground them into a powder with a pestle, intending to add it to my hot cocoas. But I didn’t wash the pestle very well last time after using it to crush garlic and chilis, so I accidentally made chili-garlic-mint powder and then I tried serving that cocoa at a later D&D sesh, and we were all baffled at why it tasted so horrible until I was like oh my god it’s the ground up zombie ass worms. I contaminated them with garlic and chilis. And the group was like YOU GROUND UP THE ZOMBIE ASS WORMS AND FED THEM TO US which seemed like a lot of fuss over what would have otherwise been free and delicious cocoa. Then after that before taking any snacks they’d ask did you perchance put any zombie ass chili-garlic worm powder in this?, and then refuse to eat until I said None.
Which they thought was very funny, even if I was slightly less amused, but I bided my time until they got tired of the joke and stopped specifically asking. Then I poured all the remaining zombie ass chili-garlic worm powder into a bag of party mix. The first guy to take a bite spluttered, and I laughed, and everyone said WHAT DID BABS DO, and I said THE WOOOORMS… YOU FORGOT TO ASK… OHMYGOD… and then I laughed so hard I actually cried. Derailed the start time almost an hour.
Oh that was a wonderful day.
A good, a neutral, and an evil DM. In this order.
It is important to me that Ryland Grace is a cis man.
This is not to say I hate the idea of trans/nonbinary Grace, not at all. Everybody deserves representation and if you see yourself in that good for you.
But that's also why cis Grace is so important to me.
Because Ryland Grace is a man who is a teacher. A man who loves teaching so much that when he finally became the leading expert in his field - helping to make world-changing discoveries and meeting the most powerful people on the planet - he constantly thought about how much he'd rather be back in his classroom. Back with his kids.
Ryland Grace is a man who works under a woman, and only complains about it because she pulls him out of his lab and drags him all over the world with her to meetings. He's a man who works with women - who argues with and respects and befriends women - just as easily (or not) as the men around him.
Ryland Grace is a man who chose to wear a flowery dress under a cardigan because it was there and it was comfortable. A man who likes silly punny t-shirts and bright colors and soft clothes.
Ryland Grace is a man who let out a scream so squeaky and high-pitched when the gravity shut off that it would be insulting to little girls if I used that comparison.
Ryland Grace is a man whose first instinct in any scenario is curiosity and whose second is compassion and empathy.
Ryland Grace is a man who cries when he's hurt. A man who cries when he's happy. Who cries when he's grieving, when he's overwhelmed, when he's afraid. He throws a trash can when he's frustrated. He thunks his forehead on a doorway when he's embarrassed. He laughs and waves his arms and spins around when he's excited. He's a man who feels things fully and isn't ashamed to show it.
Ryland Grace is a man who gets sick on the elevator and pulled off an EVA in gravity while the ship was literally ripping itself apart around him. He's a man who trips over nothing and managed to haul a limp 400 pound rock alien across the ship and up a ladder.
Ryland Grace is a man who was a coward. A man who ran instead of choosing to make the sacrifice. He's a man who didn't go quietly with dignity when he saw that the walls were closing in. He's a man who begged and pleaded and made threats he didn't mean because he was scared and didn't want to die.
Ryland Grace is a man who found someone to be brave for. Not through a relationship or parental/familial bond - but for his best friend.
And he still cried about it. He chose to be brave, to make the choice he'd fought so hard the first time. And he still grieved what he was giving up. He chose to turn around, and accepted that he would die because of it. And he was still scared and wanted to live.
But he loved his friend more.
Ryland Grace is a cis man, and that is important to me.
Because Ryland Grace is curious and compassionate and chooses clothes for comfort over everything else. He's an incredibly intelligent scientist who found his true calling, not as a researcher but as a teacher. He's friendly to everyone until you give him a reason not to be, and doesn't discriminate with either respect or distain.
He was betrayed by the people he was closest to. He understands why. He breaks down when he remembers what they did to him, and adds a little inside joke for them in his goodbye message to make them feel better.
He didn't want to leave Earth. He loves living on Erid. He would've let a lot of people suffer and die because he was scared of dying himself. He chose to give up his chance to live if it meant saving his best friend. He's smart and a little bit stupid. He's unashamedly nerdy. He's resourceful and clumsy and clever and emotional.
He's a coward. He's brave.
Ryland Grace is all of those things.
And he is a man.
And I don't think we get enough men like that in media.
guy who's having gauzy idealized wife flashbacks for the whole adventure but it turns out she isn't dead or anything he just really misses her and wants to get home

Was pursuing The Backrooms upon my pending return to the hellsite and remembered why I left the FE fandom but now it’s funny instead
Anyways prepare for more of this <3
Man sometimes you really make a sassy “fuck you now they’ve kissed” post and then a couple days later you reconnect with an old friend and also discover your all time favorite fic from the fandom is being reposted over the span of three hours. Truly no one is winning like I am rn
