BBC: #LiuXiaobo 11-year jail term was handed down in 2009 after he compiled, with other intellectuals, the Charter 08 manifesto. It called for an end to one-party rule and the introduction of multi-party democracy. Mr Liu was found guilty of trying to overthrow the state. He was a pro-democracy figurehead for activists outside mainland China, although many of his compatriots were unaware of his struggles because the authorities rigorously censored news about him. The dissident won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010 for his "long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China", but he was not permitted to travel to Norway to accept it. "Gay is Good" came from "Black is Beautiful." Black Panthers inspired the Pink Panthers. And Black Power ignited the student anti-war movement and the Stonewall riots. Straight people colonize Dolores Park (SF) during Pride because Gay Pride is the best thing that ever happened to straight people: "Coming out" means having the courage to stand in the vulnerable space outside protected cultural norms. It means finding and creating a whole person who has never been tested before. And taking pride in that courage and creativity. These are the gifts of queer people to the entire world: The primary + irresistible tenets of our queer culture. So, when we look all the way back in our history, it's important that LGBTQ people in the U.S. honor that our movement has a heritage from the organizing work of generations of Black People -- whose #civilrights organizing continues today as #blacklivesmatter -- who resist dehumanizing violence in every form and build on vibrant traditions of separatism and integration, nonviolence and militance, indulgence and austerity, celebration and mourning. In 1969, our movement exploded into mainstream culture because we followed their example: Their Black Pride in the face of humiliation, violence, and exclusion + their Black Power, bravery, beauty, music, tactics, and memes. Whenever our culture is colonized, let us remember whose work made this freedom possible, whose colonized land we now call America. And whose water we must protect. When we remember those who lost their lives under the German Nazi regime in Europe, let us care for the refugees of today's wars and today's fascism.
