i really need to shake some people and say “being passive in every situation does not mean you are not making active choices and it does not absolve you from harming others. consistently choosing to do nothing in every situation and believing that you couldn’t have possibly been the problem because you chose inaction and not a more agressive approach can in fact also be harmful.” because this keeps happening and its driving me nuts

I can actually think of an alternative explanation: small print press. He’d put out orders for various rare books with the traveling merchants who’d come through town, and every so often they’d turn up with one and he’d set about printing a hundred copies or so, then sell the fresh new copies to merchants heading towards various university towns like Avignon, Grenoble, Toulouse, etc. He’d likely keep a couple copies of each book for himself, generating a library, and might wind up with all sorts of books he couldn’t profitably make copies of to sell to the universities, like fairy tales.

If that’s his business model, then Belle might be the closest thing he’d have to an apprentice, since we can see he’s getting on in age and might have nobody else to even consider passing the business along to when he slips the mortal coil. As one final thought, her dad is an inventor, and might be the bookseller’s only actual local customer, which might also explain the relationship. Her dad would occasionally want certain types of books on natural philosophy, and the bookseller would be the one with contacts who could procure them. Just look how dangerous it was for him to go traveling all alone! Far better to leave that sort of business to professional traveling merchants.

If you combine these ideas, then you wind up with a bookseller who was training Belle as an apprentice for both small press publishing and money laundering, only to watch his very promising student be swept away by some rich guy the whole town was trying to kill twenty minutes ago. He admires her hustle, but it leaves a gaping hole in his succession plan.

Fortunately there are two newcomers in town, one with an eye for mechanics and meticulous attention to detail and one with a love of risks and charm to spare, and that's how the neurotic clock and slutty candlestick take over the legitimate and criminal wings of his enterprise respectively.

letting myself have a fandom moment here, please forgive me. like. when I'm interested in a fictional relationship, I'm interested in the dynamic between them and interested in how a romantic aspect could change or REVEAL further aspects of their dynamic. the want for that relationship to be romantic comes from a place of engaging w the plot of the story and the personalities of the character. it has never come from a place of "I want these characters in a healthy monogamous relationship with one another where they get married and have kids together" like ur all out of ur mind for this

Sometimes it hurt so deeply and felt so all-consuming that i would get an intrusive wish to see it manifest into something tangible and terrible and impossible to ignore, both for me and for everyone around me.

personally I'm a big fan of the moment a vampire gets Embraced being a metaphor for a sudden, irreversible trauma. maybe you thought you knew what it would be like but you couldn't have understood the actual enormity; maybe it was an accident or something completely out of your control. either way this event happens to you and you are changed forever

now your emotions are unstable. your anger is all-consuming, your fear takes your body away from you, and always always always you are a danger to others if you can't control yourself from what you want and need. you can no longer be in the daylight living a typical life, so your social world completely changes and so does the environment. you might be stuck now with cold empty streets and buildings. you might cling to clubs and bars are the only places where you get to be around people living their lives. in some severe cases, you can't even look at yourself anymore, or perhaps the figure in the mirror is someone you don't recognize. your past identity and way of being has been taken away, permanently

you do what you have to in order to survive. and your new way of surviving, the only way you can exist, is something society finds disgusting or fetishizes. it doesn't matter what other people think because it's all you can do anyway. your new "community", those who most understand what you're going through, are themselves traumatized and suffering, in a constant state of victim and perpetrator. maybe they want to help you but maybe they want to use you. maybe you want to be kind but now your very nature makes real consent and honesty difficult, so in some ways you are a user and abuser too

do young vampires think about their last "normal" day? was it perfectly mundane, with no warning that it would be the last one? if they could have that day again, would they try appreciate all the little details like the warmth of the sun and the taste of lunch better this time? or would they try desperately to change their fate and avoid what's coming for them? well. you can't change the past. you can only do what you can with what you have now

nothing happened i just thought of him. do you guys remember when you meet some crows in a minor sidequest and he immediately has an entirely different tone and way of speaking to what you’ve come to know. the zevran you know always defuses tension and dances around a subject giving nothing away, speaking lightly of his opinions as if they’re only a joke so he can throw them away if necessary; this new zevran makes direct and aggressive challenges, speaking bluntly and making no secret of his distrust. (“and you think that will save your hide when they nail it to a wall?”) and in the whole scene he only speaks directly to you if you specifically address him and ask him a question, even though he clearly is very uncomfortable with the course of action you’re taking, as if he cannot afford to try to advise you and be visibly rebuffed in front of these people who will be looking for weakness, or as if where possible he must avoid you interacting with the person he’s being right now. brief sighting of a wary bitter lashing out cornered animal version of him that belongs to a past life and then we can step out of this room and he can be funny and easygoing again and we can never talk about this again ever wouldn’t that be nice! i love him.
