current obsession: finished replaying Assassin's Creed Odyssey, that consumed my life for about a month and a half. Now went back to replaying Witcher 3 DLCs.

currently watching: started watching Agents of Shield (technically a re-watch from the days when the show first came out and an attempt to finish the entire thing this time), pleasantly surprised by how much fun I'm having with it. Unexpected and much-needed delight.

currently reading: at times rereading one of my long-form Rogue One fics, trying to remind myself I can write good stories. Pros: I was able to write good stories. Cons: I really miss the flow I was in when I wrote that one. My current writing project is nothing like that, and at times it makes me wonder if I just got worse.

last search: when was soy sauce invented, for story writing purposes.

working on: new chapter of my ongoing saga.

currently wearing: a pair of grey shorts and a violet-shirt with a teal ornament on it. Nice to enjoy comfortable summery warmth in the apartment until soon the cold months are going to set in.

fave flower: genuinely none, I'm weirdly indifferent to flowers. Do I like to look at pretty flowers out in the nature? Sure. But I don't like flower bouquettes, don't do any gardening or have flowers at home in any way, and literally have no strong feelings or a preference.

Being able to draw older people as attractive without reducing or erasing the visual signs of aging, and in fact showing that they're attractive because of those signs, is an artistic skill that should be valued so much more. Honestly, it should earn you an immediate fortune because holy fuck is it a rare commodity. There are so many artists who seem to think attractiveness and aging exist in opposition to each other, so they smooth every wrinkle, erase every crease, and de-age the character until they're basically thirty with silver hair. But when an artist can look at crow's feet, smile lines, weathered skin, deep-set wrinkles, and all the little traces of a life well lived and say, "No, that's what makes them beautiful," that's a level of artistic observation and care I wish we celebrated more often.

How do you write healthy parent-child relationships?

this might be more response than you want, but interesting (and kinda depressing when you think about it) fact: there’ve been a bunch of research studies where parents have been asked what they think makes a healthy parent-child relationship, and they tend to like…not answer the actual question because they think they’re being asked what good parenting is, which is not the same. so they talk about things like helping kids with homework and making sure they eat well. children, on the other hand, usually respond to the same question with stuff that’s literally just the definition of healthy relationships generally. affection, honesty, respect, spending time together, sharing interests. and the real kicker is, objectively, we know that’s the kind of stuff that actually has a much better impact not only on whether or not the relationship is strong and positive but also the kid’s overall happiness and psychological health.

so, if you want to write a character who’s really intent on being a Good Parent you’d have them putting massive effort into making their kid Grow Up Right, worrying about shit like if they have The Right Friends and they’re spending Enough Time Outside. but if you want to write a good relationship, just make parent and kid laugh together and respect boundaries and be emotionally supportive, like you would when writing a solid pair of friends or romantic couple.

i think something that is often overlooked in conversations about platonic and romantic relationships in media and the argument that “two people can just be friends” is that a big part of being queer, for me personally at least, is that i am deeply in love with my friends and would do absolutely anything for them and this sentiment alone opposes the heteronormative idea that your friends are supposed to play a secondary role in your life after a certain point. my friends are not just my friends. they’re not just anything. they’re my friends.

love the library. there's no risk. you can take out a book and go "wow this sucks" and just give it back. and when you do that you're still making the library's Number Go Up so you'll be able to roll the dice on even more books. all for the low low price of free/you already paid for it with your tax money so you might as well use it
