It's details like this that make me appreciate the WORK that went into the everyday production of Supernatural.

This was a thoughtful choice. Everything had to be set up and staged to get this shot. This is a set - not a car on a real highway where this happened by chance. Jensen had a mark. The lights were rigged. The angle and temperature of the lights were chosen to set a specific mood for the scene overall.

Everyone who worked to create this scene was a seasoned professional who knew how to tell a story within seconds with minute detail. It's subtle. While we might not literally be thinking "oh there's light on Dean's face, so that means that he's allowing himself to hope because Cas, his favorite person, is alive". Like, no. We already know Cas is alive and fine because we've been watching him annoy The Shadow for a few weeks. But Dean doesn't know that.

Anyway. All of this was intentional. It continues to be wild to me that given the constraints of production schedules, CW fuckery, how many people were involved in the business of making this show in general, that there are so many moements of just really lovely and subtle filmaking like this. They didn't have to go so hard, but they did.

Which is why, as always, I have so many questions when any of the actors are like "it was platonic" because, yeah, OK buddy, tell it to the production team? Because storytelling goes beyond acting.

obsessed w the campbells bc they really are THEE killers. john signed up to fight but the campbells are like we ARE the war and always have been. which is SO interesting in the context of mary-the-nightgown because it emphasizes more than anything else that 1) mary was playing a role and 2) dean got subsumed by a role he didn't know WAS a role until much later in life. like the mary fallacy is also the campbell fallacy. there IS no mother mary there IS no loving normal campbells which means deans WHOLE role in the family which he thought he was filling he was actually creating. MARY is not even mary. ONLY dean is mary

Especially since that wasn’t even his given name, or the name he went by any majority. He was Castiel, until Dean nicknamed him Cas. It was what Dean named who Cas became because of meeting Dean. And pretty much every human calls him Cas. Isn’t it hilarious that he never says anything about the name, never complains or says “my name is Castiel not Cas”. He embraces the name as his own and yet. And yet minus the meaning, minus the memory of who gave it or what it meant, objectively Cas thinks the name is odd. The fact that he keeps it and responds to it because Dean named him that warms my heart like you wouldn’t believe.

There was a poem I found on tumblr a while back, god help me I don’t remember the name of the writer.. I love the way they described Dean’s nickname for him. They said: “the way I took heaven from your name cas tiel and gave it to earth in a cruel, selfish urge to own you” And I love that. Because it’s the “tiel” that means “of or like God”. So by calling him Cas, Dean is making him more human. And that just always got to me. I love it.
