Just finished Queen of the Tearling. I really enjoyed this book. I thought Kelsea was a really good character. I love how the plot doesn't revolve around a love interest because I'm so sick of that in YA novels. My only problem with this book is the world...it's a little confusing as to what direction the author is going for. Chicken by Chase Night (3/5 stars) So I actually finished this book last week but I really needed some time to figure out how I felt about this book. On one hand, there are a lot of things I really liked and on the other hand, a few major things I hated. Let's start with the bad stuff (so I can end this review on a good note). I was really excited for this book based on the descriptions I heard and the short summary on the back of the book. I was under the impression that it was a LGBT book with some magical realism mixed in and while it's definitely LGBT, the magic realism part doesn't appear until the end in a major plot twist. There were small hints leading up to this revelation but it threw me off guard because it didn't fit with the rest of the story and was never explained...like at all. I did read the author's note at the end where he explains how this is really the second book in a three part series but I still would have really likes some explanation in the story. I also thought the dialogue was pretty weak at points especially for the female characters. I realize he was trying to make it sound like things teenagers would actually say but real dialogue in conversations don't transfer well on the page. Aside from those things I really enjoyed the book. The town of Hickory Ditch was beautifully described and I felt a connection to the town because I lived in a small southern town where church Is a very central point in most of the people's lives. I enjoyed Casper as a main character and his relationship with his parents. I think Chase Night does a really great job of capturing the two main characters relationship and I love seeing that unfold. If you're looking for a good southern LGBT story that brings up the whole Chick-Fil-A incident in 2010 I think you should read this book. I just wish he would have focused the story just on those aspects instead of trying to add shock value with the surreal element at the end. #drbreviews #chicken #LGBTbooks #chasenight #bookstagram

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (4/5 stars) Anyone that's part of a fandom or remotely knows anything about 80s pop culture and video games will adore this book. I absolutely loved it. It made me reminisce when I used to have time to play video games. While the characters and setting were really great, I did have a few things that bothered me, but overall I enjoy this book so much and was rooting for the characters every step of the way. Cline did a fantastic job of creating the OASIS setting it was such a magical and fantastic place and I felt so immersed in the setting when we were in the game. Some parts of the book went really slow and at times I was a little annoyed with the love scenes, but after the second part the book started to pick up speed. The biggest reason why I couldn't give this book a five star rating is because the book was a little too safe. There were a lot of opportunities for him to make parallels to how we act today or how technology affects us. While he did convey the message that love/friendships make the stress and tragedy of the real world bearable, I wanted more. If were to rate this book on pure enjoyment it would get five stars hands down. I enjoyed the story and loved finding all the nerdy references (it makes me realize i'm a lot nerdier than I thought). I truly enjoyed this story and I honestly wish the OASIS were a real thing (without the dystopian world of course). If you're a nerd, 80s buff or obsessed with video games and have not read this book what are you waiting for?! #drbreviews #bookstagramfeatures #bookstagram #bookreviews

The Rest of us Just Live Here by #PatrickNess (4/5 stars) This books was not what expected but once I got over that I really enjoyed it. I thought the characters were interesting--even the indie kids though they were kind of cliche (and I know he meant for them to be cliche to make a point). I thought the issues about how we all struggle with things in our lives and while we're not saving the world our problems still matter. I really enjoyed Mike and Jared's relationship it was really dynamic and confusing which made it feel real. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes a good contemporary YA book. #drbreview #therestofusjustlivehere #bookstagram.
