Showing Up to the ED as a Patient - Jack Abbot Headcanons
(Only warning for this one is language and it may have gotten longer (a lot) than intended)
You’d made dinner for you and Jack before his shift, leaving the clean up for after he’d left because you weren’t giving up any of your small allotment of time with him (and because he always tried to help and you tried to keep him off his leg as much as possible before his shift)
He’d kissed you softly as he grabbed his backpack and murmured how he was looking forward to curling up in bed with you in the morning since you were off
You changed into a pair of pajamas before you hit the kitchen to clean, after clearing off the table and saving the leftovers you started on the dishes
You were dancing along to the music playing from your phone when you dropped a glass in the soapy water a little too hard, you reached in to check if it had broken only to find out it had cracked along the edge
“Shit” came out as soon as it sliced into your palm and you quickly withdrew you hand from the water to check it out
It wasn’t a large cut but it was deeper than you’d been expecting and it probably didn’t help you just watched as blood bubbled from it for a bit (you’d never seen anything like that coming from your body) before you raised it above your heart to slow the flow to it
Jack was the most prepared person you’d ever met, it didn’t matter the emergency he might encounter he was ready (seriously, he had notebooks of protocols written down so you knew what to do in case he wasn’t around and color coded supply bins) so you found the supply of gauze and pressed it into it figuring that would help
With the dishes forgotten you curled up on the couch to give it a little while to clot and whatever the heck else it needed to
Half an hour later and you’d almost bled through the gauze and you knew you should go pay Jack a visit at work (last resort honestly, he was gonna give some sort of safety lecture now and probably give a demonstration of proper glass cleaning etiquette)
Driving one handed to The Pitt wasn’t nearly as difficult as you’d first expected but as you parked and looked at yourself in the rear view mirror you guessed maybe you should have changed into something more than the shorts and tank top pajama set that had been comfy at home
You quietly walked into the ED from the ambulance bay and smiled when Lena saw you, until her eyes registered you were holding your hand tightly to your abdomen and she rushed out from behind the desk to greet you
“Oh hell no” came out of Ellis as she walked out of a patient room and promptly turned back around (Jack may have been a little hyperactive about you the one other time you’d been in for food poisoning when you had first started dating)
“I’m already paging Abbot” was Lena’s response to overhearing her, Shen at least gave your shoulder a soft squeeze in passing
Lena led you to an empty room with a soft “what happened” and pulled the gauze from your hand to see for herself as she waited for Jack to show
“It’s stupid I’m here I’m sure, it just kept bleeding and I worried” your explanation was cut off as Jack stepped into the room with a panicked look and began to analyze the situation
“Hi” is all you could manage as he took your hand from Lena’s and turned it towards him, his eyes finally lifted from your hand to your face a minute later (and you might have zoned out for a moment from that, he looked even hotter looking at you with those eyes of concern right then and there than you could have ever remembered)
“Did a good job on yourself sweetheart” you could feel the blush crossing your cheeks at his words, (embarrassment the top feeling in your belly)
“Guess I just missed you” (which wasn’t a lie, you always missed him when he wasn’t around) was met with one of his signature looks and he glanced at the clock waiting until you looked too, it had only been over two hours since you’d seen him
He pulled up a stool as Lena said she’d stop back later to check in, Jack set your hand down on a tray and went back to poking and prodding around the cut as you watched his face (it was filled with concentration and something else that you couldn’t quite decipher)
“Hope it wasn’t one of my favorite glasses” he teased as you recounted your adventure which had landed you there (you were kind of shocked he was being so casual about this)
You quickly learned it was because he was trying to keep you calm and slightly distracted as he fished a piece of glass out of your hand you hadn’t even known was there (you immediately tried to jerk away from him with a soft howl at the burning pinch but he just gripped your hand tighter)
“Gonna need a couple stitches” you pulled your hand back immediately not expecting that to be the case at all, you just hadn’t been able to get the bleeding to stop and needed him
“It’s fine, I’m sure” the look he sent your way made you stop talking, he was quiet but that pinch between his eyebrows was out and it only ever made an appearance when he was holding back emotion
With a deep breath you placed your hand back in his and closed your eyes so he could do what he needed to, you couldn’t hold back a gasp as the needle full of anesthetic entered your palm but his subtle rubbing of your wrist lessened the pain
He pulls back for a moment waiting for the shot to take effect and you open your eyes once more, he’s sitting stiffly on the stool with his arms crossed over his chest
“Now I know why some of the staff thinks you’re scary” the joke didn’t land like you were hoping and he makes a little tsk at it instead
You give him a soft smile and wait for him to give one back but it doesn’t come “just teasing you” you reach your other hand out to softly touch his knee that’s bouncing
“I know” it’s a soft muttering as he turns from your touch to get the supplies he needs
He scoots back up to you and gives a soft squeeze to your forearm as he positions you to apply the stitches (your eyes close again, that’s just not something you need to watch) and a few minutes later you hear the gloves being removed from his hands
Before you can open your eyes there’s a soft kiss placed on your forehead with a murmured “next time, text me you’re coming. Lena sending a message that my girlfriend just came into the ED isn’t really a good start to my night” (you hadn’t even thought of that)
“Sorry” is cut off by him standing up and informing you that now you get to spend some time in the room before he can drive you home (with a look that states he knows you drove yourself there and that lecture will happen in private)
“Jack” stops him on his way out the door and he turns to look at you “thanks for taking care of me” he smiles at that and nods adding softly “favorite part of my day usually”
