Ok so, DSOD actually answered a question that had been bugging me for a while.

How Bakura got the Millennium Ring.

I know that in the manga Bakura stated that his father found it at a flea market and brought it back for him. Except we later learn from Shadi and Pegasus that not just anyone can pick up/have the items, they violently reject anyone they deem unworthy/who isn’t chosen (and they sure as heck wouldn’t be for sale anywhere), which contradicts that statement. Plus it makes Shadi look like a really crappy guardian.

But, then the movie gives us a different scene, Bakura’s father finds it, it rejects him and then young Bakura picks it up, and it goes ‘ah yes, my chosen host’ and everything goes to hell.

And considering how Bakura reacted when Agami/Diva forced him to remember that night, it’s clearly a memory he’s shoved to the back of his mind. He doesn’t want to remember it, doesn’t want to think about it, it was so traumatic. But, he’d still need to say something when people ask where he got the thing.

And ‘my archaeologist father picked it up at a flea market in his travels’ seems like a pretty nice cover story no?

This is actually mentioned in several different places in the manga!

So Ryou does tell his friends that his dad bought it at a market in Egypt and brought it back for him. It’s a believable lie for both the reader and Ryou’s friends until later in YGO Duelist when we see how Pegasus gets his Millennium Item. I’m using phone pictures of my manga so these aren’t the best, but …

There’s the Millennium Ring still in the stone (and thus still in Kul Elna). When Pegasus goes to get his Item, Ryou has yet to get his. Timeline-wise, Ryou is about nine years old when Pegasus gets his Item at 17. Shaadii has been guarding the Millennium Items kept at Kul Elna, as is his duty as a Tombkeeper (not in the same vein as the Ishtars, who are the protectors of the Pharaoh’s secrets; rather, Shaadii is a Tombkeeper like Bobassa who is guarding the Items).

Now, Shaadii’s alive when Pegasus meets him. The next time we see Shaadii timeline-wise is after Malik’s tenth birthday, post-Initiation, when he kills his father.

This time, Shaadii is dead. It’s not clear that Shaadii is dead because he’s mysterious as hell, but in Malik’s past he’s just pops up announced and he’s coming through the wall. His death isn’t explain until Malik and Bakura’s tag-duel against Yami Malik where Malik mentions to Yami Malik (and Bakura overhears) that Malik remembers Shaadii. Bakura is confused and says that he was sure he got rid of Shaadii, implying that Bakura killed Shaadii.

For Bakura to do this though, he’d have had to killed Shaadii between Pegasus’ and Malik’s moments with their respective Items. This puts Bakura right around ten years of age. The DSOD clip makes him a bit younger, but for all the subtle manga moments, I can handle this one slip-up. It’s really well done!

I kinda get the feeling in his VERY first manga appearance Shadi was meant to be alive cause he comes and goes like a normal person and even cries when he sees a mummy, but that could be explained as something the author decided later XD In terms of DSOD I also feel that Ryou was aged down–he looks about four–though that’s hardly the weirdest thing that’s happened in Yu-Gi-Oh, since Thief King Bakura is officially ONE when the massacre happened and HE looks about four.

I guess what bugs me about DSOD showing what happened in the manner it did is that the mystery that was cultivated from NOT showing it for so long died off–you could assume Ryou was telling the truth, that he was lying, that Yami Bakura was lying, or that he got the Ring and/or Bakura killed Shadi some other way (the anime and dub had alternate explanations for both as well)–as well as the details serving primarily as motivation for Aigami and not developing Ryou much.

I think since DSOD takes some elements from the anime as well as the manga and more people are familiar with the anime than the manga, it was easier to see it as a retcon or take the movie as its own universe. Fans also had so much time to speculate and  build up headcanons for things that seeing it set in stone after all this time could be disorienting or even disappointing. And that’s not even getting into the whole Plana thing/Quantum Cube thing, whether Mr. Bakura lived/died or not, how Mr. Bakura’s personality was handled, as well as when Amane and Mrs. Bakura died in relation to all of it. XD;

I think what I always assumed happened in terms of the manga was something like ‘Mr. Bakura buys the Ring from one of Shadi’s men to give to his son cause DESTINY and all, Shadi follows him home to judge whether Ryou’s worthy, and Yami Bakura’s like ‘Get out’ and kills him’ XD
