I hate that I'm back to having to share this, but my financial situation is once again not great (tm). For those who don't know, I lost my job a few months back and have been stuck on unemployment since.

While I do have a part time job now and can still qualify for some unemployment payments, I barely get paid over $100 for a week's worth even with $16 an hour.

It's been piling up, so I updated my G0fundme appropriately with a little bit of a breakdown of my current finances.

While I do not want to force anybody to donate, all I ask is that you share it around if possible. I know a lot is going on in the world right now on a much bigger scale, but every little bit helps me out. Thank you.

Hexagon Quilt

This is the second time I've seen a video of this technique and this explanation is so clear! It does use more fabric than English paper piecing (EPP) but you end up with a double sided hexagon so don't have to source fabric for the backing.

I'm doing EPP at the moment but I have a hole punch to make the papers and just use leaflets and junk mail, so it doesn't feel wasteful. I don't think it's difficult either- in the video she mentions it's not for beginners, but I don't have that much experience with hand sewing or EPP and I've been finding it pretty easy so YMMV

I saw this video yesterday and was seized with the need to try it out immediately. Lookit my cute lil' hexagon baby!!

Here is what the backside looks like. OP notes this takes more fabric than paper piecing, but that excess fabric makes it already triple-layered. Besides not needing backing fabric, I don't think you'd need batting for this quilt at all. It's already thick and soft just from folding all that fabric into a hexagon.

ok so i've been doing one of these and I think it is important to point out: the puffiness is mostly not the technique for making the hexes, but the fact that the person making the video isn't ironing/pressing them. Here are a bunch of hexagons when i first made them:

the quilt top ends up being a lot less puffy and with much sharper lines this way:

now! this may not be the look you're looking for! OP in the video mentions liking the puffiness, and this will need batting in the way OP's doesn't

another reason to avoid pressing is because the hexagons aren't super precise - the puffiness can help compensate for that in a way that what I'm doing can't - if you look at the corners you will see they're not always great.

but if like me you prefer sharper lines, and were thinking this technique wasn't worth it because of that, give it a try! just remember to iron your hexes

Fish bowl

The fish depicted on this bowl is a coelacanth. Coelacanths were believed to have gone extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period, 66 million years ago but in 1938 were discovered to still be a living species without changing. They are my favorite fish, and I chose to depict them to try creating a detailed design with sgraffito
