Blackout Teaser - 4/23/26

Two months to the day! I have finished another chapter and it only took twoooooo monthsssssss! And it's a chapter so spoilery I literally have to leave out the chapter title from this teaser lmfao but the excerpt is safe : )

Here's the next teaser for Blackout - the sequel to Tales of Travel (aka the next installment of the Fall into Flying universe)!

Chapter Twelve – The [redacted]

Akai caught Megure outside the hotel. Obviously, his first choice for an in with the MPD would have been Shinichi, but after years of crossing paths in the midst of crises and cases, it wasn’t as though other officers were unfamiliar with Akai Shuuichi. “Megure-keibu,” he said, drawing the inspector and his wife up short. Megure Midori gave Akai a long, assessing once-over but did not step away or let go of her husband’s hand. “Can I borrow one your officers?” Everything about Megure sharpened. He cast a quick, uneasy glance back at the hotel, then asked, “What’s happened?” “Maybe nothing,” Akai answered, intentionally leaving the possibility of a disruption to the afterparty up in the air. “But I’d like to get ahead of it if it’s something.”

I know myself well enough to know I would not be very good at fanbiding and that would mainly frustrate me, so while I love fan binding and admire those who do it, I've never dabbled.

I have never regretted that decision more than I did waking up from the dream I recently had, where I excitedly bought a rare copy of the novel that Goncharov (1973) was based on, opened it up, and found that it was a hollowed out "book safe" for keeping valuables in.

I tracked down a copy of this invaluable classic and somehow got my hands on a near pristine copy secondhand from the 4th printing. It’s lost the dustjacket, alas, but that means I got it for like £5 and not the £4200 a first edition printing in fine condition goes for.

Squidge! Holy blast from the past, Batman. The last time I remember even looking at that site was... eons ago.

Not only is Squidge still around, it's expanded and grown! It is still run by the same guy, though now it's a nonprofit with a board and everything, and while they maintain all the old squidge sites as static archives, they have a new multifandom archive using the AO3 code at squidgeworld.org. They also host podfics and fanart.

For those younguns in the crowd, back in the day erotic fanworks--especially slash--was not welcome very many places. Walter was willing to host it, and has been a haven for NSFW fanworks since 1994. The various archives and so on hosted at squidge.org were never very large, compared to lots of other archives, but they were a necessary part of the fannish ecosystem, and I'm really glad that there is now a structure in place to keep the whole system running beyond just "Walter's a great guy willing to donate lots of time and money." Walter is a great guy! but like. it's good to have other people to help out and keep things going in the long run.

It had only taken Shinichi a moment to scan their surroundings, taking everything in – this cozy nest Kaito had prepared just for them, safe and isolated and perfect.

Furuya would have warned them if they were walking into something actively dangerous, but he’d also taught them to always be prepared.

He visited the compound, just on the off chance of finding something, but it was already occupied by the Suzuki’s construction team preparing to break ground.

I'm not using my PC anymore for art, just a Samsung tablet, and time lapse recording is too laggy. But I hope this is okay.

I colour and shade and render on one layer per part (so shading and colouring on Atem, same for the wings etc.)

Wanna guess where the problem was? That's right. It was one sentence earlier. Fuckin' classic. Can't believe it took me three weeks to figure that out. Whatever.

Naturally, of course, now that I am unstuck in terms of writer's block, I am stuck in terms of needing to put my eyeballs on the internal layout of Agasa's ridiculous house. This is, at least, very doable. Now excuse me while I go put in one of the dozens of movies I have memorized. For science.

...I am WEAK to this kind of suggestion! You can't do that to me! I'm going directly to my WIP and searching that word! (and then cutting out a few that are spoiler-y...)

Nakamori straightened and looked this last reporter dead in the eye. “I have worked closely with both of those men.” He was using his command voice suddenly, and it carried through the crowd. “And I’ve known Kudou-tantei’s fiancé since he was a child. Listen to me when I say there is nothing illicit going on with any sort of seedy romance like you’re suggesting.”

Shinichi snorted out a laugh and Kaito felt suddenly much lighter. If Shinichi was still laughing, nothing serious was about to follow.

“You can’t just kiss me like that and suddenly stop,” Kaito murmured against the corner of Shinichi’s lips as Shinichi caught his breath. “You left me hanging, you know.”

“Well.” Shinichi smirked. “What’s mine is yours, and all that.” He kissed Kaito’s cheek then unlocked the car, suddenly anxious to get behind the wheel.

That cold, bloodless terror suddenly became the pitch dark freezer where he’d woken, bound, gagged, freezing and injured, but worst of all knowing that Kaito was in danger because Shinichi had stupidly tailed Sasagi instead of talking to him.

Yuasa screamed, the men swore, and suddenly Oda was the one doing the pushing, shoving her subordinates behind the nearest cover where they all stumbled into a trembling pile on the ground, covering their heads.

Akai could feel his own pulse suddenly thrumming in his ears. “A drug,” he said numbly. “What did it look like?”
