Trainability in cats is a funny thing.

My cats understand and will obey a number of verbal commands, one of which is “go away”. I don’t use it often, but if they’re bugging me and I’m trying to work or doing something that could be dangerous for cats, I can tell them to go away, and off they go - they’ll only keep pestering me if there’s a serious problem they need me to look at.

That said, their idea of a serious problem that requires my attention is somewhat eccentric. Previous instances have included:

There was an unfamiliar car parked across the street

Their water bowl was four inches to the left of its usual position

One of them had puked on the stairs and they didn’t want to walk past it

It was raining

One of them saw a weird bug

These are all very important things that required your attention. They’re doing a good job.

Dogs really aren’t much better.  I teach all my dogs the command “show me”.  How it works is if the dog needs something but I’m having trouble understanding what exactly they’re trying to tell me, I say “show me” and they lead me to whatever the problem is.  Usually they lead me to a real problem (like a toy that got stuck under the couch, their water bowl is empty, etc).  But sometimes they want me to fix things like this-

They pulled the covers off my bed and now they want me to put the covers back

They put their ball on top of the ottoman but the ottoman won’t throw it for them

The cat is sleeping and won’t chase them

A flower fell off the potted plant

The cat is sitting in a box and they don’t like it

One of them lost their bandana

The cat won’t take the toy they’re trying to give her

The cat DID take the toy they gave her and now they want it back

Same reason Young Justice and Green Lantern The Animated Series were canceled: Girls liked it. Bruce Timm finally up an’ said it out loud in an interview a while back when he was asked why in the hell GL:TAS had been canceled when it was doing so well on every front; DC’s animation department has institutionally decided that feee-males don’t/can’t/shouldn’t like superheroes, so even if a show is drawing in great viewership numbers and has great toy sales, once they find out that it’s popular with women and girls, they pull the plug on it. Cartoon Network loved Teen Titans— two million viewers for new episodes will do that— and wanted a Season Six, and the production staff was already in the planning stages for it; they were going to have a big arc about Terra and why she was Living Normal, and do a lot more with the extended Titans team members.

To elaborate on this point a bit, the reason this happens is that modern television merchandising aims for total market segregation.

In a nutshell, it’s much more efficient to sell things to people if you can divide them up into tightly defined subcategories that have no interests in common; that way, you never risk accidentally competing with yourself.

This is why children’s toys (and toy sales channels) are actually much more strongly gendered these days than they were forty, thirty, even twenty years ago: one of the basic market segregation splits they’ve decided to use is “boys versus girls”.

Ever wonder why you see Avengers t-shirts that leave Black Widow out of the group shot, or Guardians of the Galaxy action figure lines with no Gamora? That’s market segregation in action.

The upshot is that shows with crossover appeal can actually be cancelled for being too popular with girls; they’re viewed as “stealing” the female market from the specifically girl-targeted media that rightfully “owns” it.

This is the sort of thing folks are talking about when they say gender roles are socially constructed, by the way. The gender split in media merchandising? It’s not just artificial, it’s deliberately imposed as a top-down marketing strategy. When folks try to justify it by saying “this is the ways it’s always been” or “this is just what the market wants”, they’re lying through their teeth - this is, in fact, the merchandisers dictating to the market what it wants in order to sell stuff more efficiently.

(Interestingly, the reverse isn’t always true: if a specifically girl-targeted show unexpectedly becomes popular with boys, sometimes rather than being cancelled, its merchandising will shift to court the male collector’s market. TV execs are so sexist, even their sexism is sexist.)

It gets worse.

Paul Dini, a writer/producer said this on a podcast: “ That’s the thing, you know I hate being Mr. Sour Grapes here, but I’ll just lay it on the line: that’s the thing that got us cancelled on Tower Prep, honest-to-God was, it’s like, ‘we need boys, but we need girls right there, right one step behind the boys’—this is the network talking—’one step behind the boys, not as smart as the boys, not as interesting as boys, but right there.’”

Cartoon network and Warner brothers deliberately made the conscious decision to dumb down their female characters because they want to push female viewers away. In fact, Tower Prep was cancelled because it had too many female viewers because the writers made too many well written female characters.

So shitty representation of girls isn’t something that just happens. It’s the result of deliberate planning just so the execs can make more money.

And it’s not just cartoon network. I mean, why do you think Nick fucked over Korra so badly? Remember them telling Bryke they didn’t want a female Avatar? Why do you think there are no Korra figurines or action figures?

Hi everyone! This is an illustrated guide I made as part of my co-admining work at The Middle Eastern Feminist on Facebook! It will be published there shortly.  The technique that is displayed here is a genuine one used in psychology - I forgot the name and couldn’t find it again so if you know about it, feel free to tell me! Some could say: “Yes but you can use that technique for instances of harassment other than Islamophobic attacks!”, and my reply is: Sure! Please do so, it also works for other “types” of harassment of a lone person in a public space!! However I’m focusing on protecting Muslims here, as they have been very specific targets lately, and as a French Middle Eastern woman, I wanted to try and do something to raise awareness on how to help when such things happen before our eyes - that way one cannot say they “didn’t know what to do”!  I’d like to insist on two things: 1) Do not, in any way, interact with the attacker. You must absolutely ignore them and focus entirely on the person being attacked! 2) Please make sure to always respect the wishes of the person you’re helping: whether they want you to leave quickly afterwards, or not! If you’re in a hurry escort them to a place where someone else can take over - call one of their friends, or one of yours, of if they want to, the police. It all depends on how they feel! For my fellow French-speakers: I will translate it in French and post it on my page as soon as I can :) Please don’t hesitate to share this guide as it could push a lot of people to overcome bystander syndrome!! Please, stop eating fish. The world’s stocks of seafood will have collapsed by 2048 at present rates of destruction by fishing. This means the ocean will be empty by 2048 if people don’t stop eating fish. The fishing industry is the biggest killer of animals in the world, more than 1 trillion fish die each year. Please ask yourself if your fish consumption is worth the total extinction of all marine life. Please stop eating fish and alert everyone you know what will happen if we don’t.

Well then people will turn to eating other things *cough buffalo* and those things will go extinct too. The bigger message here, which should be obvious, is there’s too many people on the planet for the planet to sustain any of our habits, eating included. If we can “empty” the entire ocean (most of the earth’s surface area and volume) then we could clearly empty the much smaller surface area of our land space as well, yes?

I’m not a scientist, but that seems like common sense unless there’s something I’m blatantly missing. I am aware of the fact that many caught fish are discarded and wasted for not being proper size, etc which probably accounts for a great deal of death- and I agree, that needs to stop. But it doesn’t change the fact that the planet likely can’t sustain us past 2048 anyway. Switch from fish to cows? Nope, methane dissolves the ozone layer. Switch to wild land animals? Extinction. If we all became vegan, animals would survive but forests would be mowed down to make space for farms.

Back to my original point- I think the problem is significantly bigger than fish. No one wants to take their blinders off and see how thoroughly we’ve screwed the planet and ourselves.

actually, animals like cows, chickens, and pigs are bred and maintained specifically for human consumption to reduce the risk of underpopulation/extinction. This doesn’t really happen with fish, which is why there’s a bigger problem here. The same thing happens with farming.  Also, research is showing that because of recent green changes, the ozone is beginning to repair itself. If we slightly change our diet and food consumption to less fish and more cows/chickens/pigs, there wouldn’t really be any consequences. Think of it this way: the US has been consuming huge amounts of cow, pig, and chicken for years, and these animals aren’t going extinct. This is because we have developed a way to maintain a population in such a way that will answer our needs, as well as keeping these animals ecological needs. So, no, veganism isn’t the answer, either, and while we did screw the planet over, the changes we have made thus far are showing that we can improve upon what we have done, and if we continue making these changes, we can continue inhabiting this planet. I like that you have good intentions, but at least do a little bit of research.

Speaking of research, neither of us actually cited any sources. I never mentioned the extinction of domesticated animals, so that’s a completely different argument.

My argument was mostly an “IIRC” with the understanding that half of the fish we eat are farmed anyways. Same problems that plague land farming industries with regards to treatment of the animals, but it’s farming nonetheless. As you said, “bred and maintained specifically for human consumption.” So I’m not sure about your second sentence.

Yes, I also knew that the ozone layer is healing. Quite slowly. According to the cited study the Guardian article used from Science magazine, the full recovery is likely to take 50 years.

Which, oops, coincidentally is several years after the earth is projected to run out of space for humans at our current growth rate (taking into account the progress we have made and are making). The original study comes from the World Wildlife Fund.

I’m not saying “Ah! Doomsday! We only have until 2050 and then we all die in hellfire!” My only argument, which I have now properly cited (it was a moment of laziness but I should have done more work initially), is that we can eat less fish-> it will help fishes for a while-> all species of planet, and planet by extension, are still in a great deal of trouble.
