i will never ever be able to forgive rick for smearing piper the way he did. the daughter of a cherokee movie star and the greek goddess of love and beauty had SO MUCH potential and instead of taking the time to research what piper’s culture/heritage could’ve been like he simply decided to slap some feathers in her hair, make her a thief and call it a day

Even worse than the fact he did this is the fact that rather than listening to people who are raising awareness about this, there’s fandom members who refuse to acknowledge it’s bad, continue to include said butchered rep on the basis of preserving canon, and create content with said traits. Sometimes canon is problematic. Sometimes content creators do bad things without realising how bad those things are. We can and should call that out, urge writers to do better, and fandom needs to acknowledge that it’s okay to criticise the books, and the author, the world won’t end, you won’t be forced to stop reading the books. Especially when the fallout of Piper’s canon portrayal is a sizeable number of young people who now believe it is perfectly okay to portray Native people in that way. And that can lead to them influencing their peers and other fandom members, so it spreads. People, especially POC who call it out, often get shot down for calling out fandom racism. It’s become controversial for a blog to say “hey, it may not have been intentional, and I’m grateful for the rep, but this is a harmful racist stereotype and we’d like you to avoid using it”. It shouldn’t be controversial to say Piper’s canon portrayal was problematic. Especially the part where Jason likes her “despite” her being Native. Like her being Native is a trait that would normally make her unlovable therefore he’s a good guy for loving her despite it. We usually use “despite” in situations like: “I love my cat despite the fact he bites” or “I love school despite the homework” or “I love this jumper despite the fact it itches”; it’s used to single out a negative trait that we do not love when making a sweeping statement about what we do love.

5) golden boy/ outsider girl

6) their dynamic would be so interesting because Jason has always been generally liked and accepted while Drew has always struggled with belonging and that would be so interesting to develop within any of these tropes
