journal factory burned down here’s an extract of what I found in the rubble:

I’m still good friends with several of my childhood friends and we met over drinks yesterday bc a member of our group that moved to florida a few years ago was visiting brazil. She and I talked and talked all night and when I mentioned the fact that I’d been listening to the spice girls earlier that day (lmao) she immediately started talking about mel b and geri and how they def had an affair and on that split second in which she spoke I swear to god I saw a brief but knowing look in her eye as if she was scanning my reaction. Later in the night as we were all leaving the restaurant she hugged me three (!!) times and kissed me on the cheek, not the two little gay kisses that people do (la bise or whatever tf you call it in english), an actual peck on the cheek and gazed straight into me again with her big hazel eyes. and now I’m like. what are we

but now she’s on a plane back to tampa or wherever the hell she lives in florida and she’s in pre-med so we’re not gonna see her very soon. fuck my stupid gay life

the thing that bewilders me about a lot of fantasy readers is that they read about settings and plots featuring imperialism, war, and slavery and then call the inclusion of violence, abuse, and sexual exploitation "edgy" and "gratuitous" and it's like what did you think was happening. why were you under the impression that you were going to get a cozy story about fascism or something. far be it from me to criticize anyone for not wanting to read about torture in their spare time, and there are certainly cases where heavy subjects are poorly executed, but is it not equally insulting to sanitize them for a feel-good adventure.. like no one put a gun to your head and forced you to give your fantasy novel an enslaved protagonist. sometimes writing is supposed to make you feel bad
